There are many stories about Jean-Luc Godard in Cannes, like the year he helped to shut it down (1968) because of the civil unrest that was sweeping France at the time. Then there was the time when (in 1985) he was ambushed in the Palais by a Belgian anarchist and hit in the face with a custard pie after the premiere of Détective. And, as recently as 2018, there was the time he conducted a press conference for his film The Image Book via FaceTime from Switzerland, making journalists line up to speak into a mobile phone.
But the story that endures the most is the time in 1985 he signed a contract on a napkin with Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, CEOs of The Cannon Group, whose big hits that year were Invasion U.S.A., starring Chuck Norris, and Death Wish 3, with Charles Bronson. Godard — who died last year at age...

There are many Pokémon out there and they are all so surprisingly different. They all have different abilities, moves, voices, personalities, and appearances. Some Pokémon are quite cute and have viewers making goo-goo eyes at the screen. However, other Pokémon are quite intimidating looking. True fans of Pokémon know that looks are not everything when it comes to their strength.

Specifically, some of the most intimidating-looking Pokémon have some of the lowest stats and do not perform well during battles. It's not that weak Pokémon are bad and trainers don't want them. Each Pokémon is very beneficial for its own reason. However, it becomes confusing in a way when a Pokémon looks fierce but is actually quite weak. Below are some of the most intimidating-looking Pokémon who are actually weak.

David Elkouby's trouble began with a missing gun, but since he deals in Hollywood memorabilia, it was a movie prop. Mr. Freeze's light-up cryogenics blaster, wielded by Arnold Schwarzenegger, had disappeared from the Warner Bros. set of Batman & Robin in the fall of 1996.
Security personnel and top brass alike had already grown irritated with the increasing raft of props vanishing off their lot. Now the problem had impacted an active production, delaying filming on a major feature.

It may have taken a while after a Covid-caused production shutdown, but Fargo‘s intriguing, Chris Rock-fronted fourth season has finally procured a premiere, with FX having officially set a September release date.
Fargo Season 4 will premiere on FX on Sunday, September 27 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt, on which the first two episodes will air. Subsequent episodes will premiere on the same Sunday timeslot individually on a weekly basis. Streamers will be interested to know that each new episode will hit Hulu the day after their FX premieres.
The release date announcement occurs after the Chicago production of Fargo was one of several to be shut down back in March. Despite having only two episodes left to shoot, the shutdown resulted in a delay to the fourth season’s original April 19 release date; a move likely designed to avoid a situation similar to shows like AMC’s The Walking Dead...

Idris Elba might be a big name in Hollywood, but there are many strings to the 47 year-old’s bow. As well as being a world-famous actor, he’s also a DJ and musician that founded his own record label, the creator of British sitcom In the Long Run and Netflix’s recently-canceled Turn Up Charlie, made his feature directorial debut with 2018’s Yardie and even won a professional kickboxing fight in 2016.

The Covid-19 pandemic has many of us at home with our kids, and while we’ve got distance learning to handle from many of our school systems, giving us a taste of what homeschooling is like, there’s also some great opportunity for watching films together as a family. Since we can’t go out to see a movie right now, here are some recent kids and family films you can catch right in your living rooms.
Detective Pikachu
Where to Watch: Hulu, Amazon
While my kids and I can still play a little bit of Pokemon Go (as long as we keep our social distancing), hanging out with Pikachu on screen is another option, thanks to the recent film. At a time when the box office is in disarray, theaters are lying empty and unused, and major film releases are getting canceled or postponed, Sonic the Hedgehog has managed to claim a record by becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, at least at the domestic box-office.
The Paramount production currently stands at a little above $145 million dollars domestic collection. This puts it slightly ahead of Detective Pikachu, which managed to make around $144 million domestically. However, Detective Pikachu is still ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog in international territories, with earnings of over $400 million dollars.
The road to box office success for Sonic was paved with difficulties. The cult classic video game character has not been a part of the cultural zeitgeist for some time now, despite at one point being a rival to Mario in terms of brand identity among general audiences, and not just gamers.

Video games seem to be the one thing Hollywood cannot crack. Over the last century of film, we have seen countless adaptations of books, comics, television shows and even other TV shows do well both critically and commercially. Video games are always subject to some of the worst films ever, even when everything seems to be perfect (such as the director of 2015’s Macbeth directing an Assassin’s Creed film starring Michael Fassbender).

Sure, maybe it’s hard because plenty of games already feel like strange amalgamations of movies (like Uncharted and Tomb Raider clearly taking inspiration from the Indiana Jones trilogy) or because studio meddling gets in the way. Regardless, the success of Sonic The Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu have proven there’s definitely room for game adaptations to succeed. Here are ten filmmakers that should consider throwing their skills at some virtual worlds.

The cast of Matt Reeves' upcoming superhero movie The Batman continues to grow, as Teen Wolf stars and real-life twin actors Charlie and Max Carver have signed on to appear in the movie. It remains unclear exactly who the two will be portraying in the movie, but the acting siblings will reportedly be given "sizable roles" in the story. This means they might be playing known characters from DC Comics lore, which also means that now's the time to let the speculation about their roles begin.
Looking at the comics, there are multiple possibilities as to who Max Carver and Charles Carver will be playing in The Batman if Reeves is adapting their characters from previously published Batman stories. It could be the criminal brothers Tweedledum and Tweedledee, who first appeared in Detective Comics in 1943. “Sonic the Hedgehog” will have to worry about more than just a waxy mustached villain this weekend. Paramount’s family film will face box office competition from another kid-friendly adventure, Disney and 20th Century’s “The Call of the Wild.”
Harrison Ford and a dog named Buck star in “The Call of the Wild,” the latest big-screen adaptation of Jack London’s early 1900s novel. The PG film is expected to bring in $10 million to $18 million when it opens in 3,700 venues in North America over the weekend, likely not enough to supplant reigning champ “Sonic.”
After “Sonic’s” stellar $70 million launch over the Presidents’ Day holiday — cementing a new opening weekend record for video game adaptations — the movie should easily top box office charts again. “Sonic” could add another $25 million to $30 million to its domestic haul if it holds similarly to other video game adaptations like “Detective Pikachu” or Dwayne Johnson’s “Rampage.

The verdict is in on the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which is arguably one of the most interesting blockbusters hitting theaters this year, given everything surrounding the project. It's had a long, complicated road to make it to this point but the beloved Sega icon is finally headlining a live-action adventure on the big screen. So, how is it? According to critics who have weighed in so far, pretty good!
Rotten Tomatoes has tallied the numbers from critics who have weighed in up to this point and, as of this writing, the movie has a very solid 70 percent approval rating, with 61 reviews counted. Currently, The Angry Birds Movie 2 is the highest-rated video game movie ever, sitting at 73 percent. Video game movies have, for most of their history, not been great and we've only very recently started to get to a point where studios are figuring out a way to make these adaptations work.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Jean-Luc Godard's The Rise and Fall of a Small Film Company (1986), which is receiving an exclusive global online premiere on Mubi, is showing July 13 - August 12, 2018 as a Special Discovery.Alfred Hitchcock may have been the one who famously likened actors to cattle, but leave it to Jean-Luc Godard to actually depict the analogy. Throughout Godard’s Grandeur et décadence d’un petit commerce de cinéma (The Rise and Fall of a Small Film Company), his comic 1986 contribution to the multinational “Série noire” program, the iconoclastic French auteur pokes and prods a roundup of filmmaking measures, from the casting corral and the necessary financial wrangling to the ever-evolving technical wilderness of modern media. Recently born again into the world of narrative filmmaking, Godard began the 1980s with Sauve qui peut (la vie), a release he dubbed his “second first film.

Mubi's retrospective For Ever Godard is showing from November 12, 2017 - January 16, 2018 in the United States.Jean-Luc Godard is a difficult filmmaker to pin down because while his thematic concerns as an artist have remained more or less consistent over the last seven decades, his form is ever-shifting. His filmography is impossible to view in a vacuum, as his work strives to reflect on the constantly evolving cinema culture that surrounds it: Godard always works with the newest filmmaking technologies available, and his films have become increasingly abstracted and opaque as the wider culture of moving images has become increasingly fragmented. Rather than working to maintain an illusion of diegetic truth, Godard’s work as always foreground its status as a manufactured product—of technology, of an industry, of on-set conditions and of an individual’s imagination. Mubi’S Godard retrospective exemplifies the depth and range of Godard’s career as...

To accompany the exhaustive retrospective of the films of Jean-Luc Godard (49 programs in 21 days) that started as part of the New York Film Festival and runs through the end of October, I had planned to select my ten all-time favorite posters for Godard’s films. But when I sat down to the task and laid out the ten I’d chosen in front of me, the result was a selection of posters so overly familiar as to be banal. It looked like the postcard rack of any film bookstore in Paris. Much as I had hoped to choose less obvious designs, when it came down to it the posters created for Godard’s films in the 60s are hands down among the greatest film posters ever made: Clément Hurel’s Breathless, Chica’s Une femme est une femme, Jacques Vaissier’s Vivre sa vie, Georges Kerfyser’s Band à part and Une femme mariée,...

This is a talk given by French director of photography Caroline Champetier at the La Roche-sur-Yon International Film Festival in October 2012, originally published in two parts on the festival’s site (www.fif-85.com). This translation is being published with their kind permission. This year's festival will take place from October 16-21, Kelly Reichardt will be the guest of honor. Many thanks to Emmanuel Burdeau, programmer of the festival, Jordan Mintzer and Caroline Champetier.
Caroline Champetier: I’ve always tried to take a step back from what I’m doing. The more I work, however, the less I’m able to deal with this exercise. I just finished production on Claude Lanzmann’s The Last of the Unjust and have barely said goodbye to David Teboul, a young director who I worked with on Cinq avenue Marceau (2002), a film I think very highly of and that’s about Yves Saint Laurent’s last collection.

'Dostoevskian' French actor with an aura of tormented youth
With his emaciated but hypnotically handsome face and lithe body, the French actor Laurent Terzieff, who has died of respiratory infection aged 75, graced the stage and films for more than half a century. There was always an aura of tormented youth about Terzieff which he carried into the classic roles of his maturity such as Luigi Pirandello's Henry IV (1989) and Shakespeare's Richard II (1991). His perfect diction and rhythmic precision made his rendering of Jean Cocteau's narration of Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex in Bob Wilson's production at the Théâtre du Châtelet in 1996 particularly exciting.
Terzieff's special talents were used by many of the great theatre producers of the day: Jean-Louis Barrault, Peter Brook, Roger Planchon, Maurice Garrel, Roger Blin and André Barsacq. He also directed dozens of plays, many at the Théâtre du Lucernaire in Montparnasse. Paradoxically, given his tormented persona as an actor,...

- Like all great French actresses, Julie Delpy’s performances burn through screens into the hearts of cinemaphiles everywhere. It’s not just her blonde locks or her milky skin that attracts viewers, but her ability to fine-tune a performance to the most miniscule nuance. Delpy made her screen debut under the direction of cinema maestro Jean Luc-Godard in Détective. Since then she has gone on to work with a slew of famous directors including Lasse Hallström Richard Linklater, and Krzysztof Kieslowski. Although born in France by two actors who play themselves in the film, Delpy cannot be claimed exclusively by the Parisians, for she is an internationally recognized icon of great cinema. 2 Days in Paris marks Delpy's sophomore feature effort and the film is a throwback/critique on New Wave romances mixing comedy, drama and depicting Paris in a not-so-romantic light. The film centers on bickering couple Marion and
