James Mason, to whom Ismail Merchant had shown the script, immediately accepted the role, especially as, after two days of rehearsals, shooting - in 16 mm - required only three days, and the actor was in great demand at the time.

The character portrayed by Madhur Jaffrey is never known by a personal name other than as "The Princess".
