Two Main Characters make up for Films Weaknesses

Very low budget film that looks like a tv movie with a supporting cast that can best be described as 'stock characters'. Bridges fiancee (played by Janet Margolin) is particularly annoying. However, despite these drawbacks, it's the two main characters and their interactions with each other that make this film so interesting. Both represent the different ends of the american spectrum. Leibman is the free spirit who goes through life like it's just one big party. Yet he has no job and mounting debt. Bridges is the responsible one with a decent job and a beautiful fiancee. Yet he feels shackled and bored. Together they try to escape themselves by going on a long carefree trip. Slowly the trip begins to unravel, exposing the thin line that is out there, and how everyone and everything has their limits. A rather caustic view of the EASY RIDER syndrome in this good, but not great, movie.

The Best Things in Life Aren't Free...or, Even Freedom Costs Something

A working stiff in Los Angeles, nervous about his upcoming marriage to a nagging girl from his office, takes a sick day to be with his bachelor friend, an irresponsible swinger whose bills have piled up, his wheels repossessed and his unemployment benefits revoked. They end up driving north through California on a lark, but are unable to escape the responsibilities that come with being an adult. Screenwriter James Dixon wants to verbally juxtapose the grind of the grown-up world (marriage, a mortgage and bringing home a weekly income) with the more fanciful behavior of naughty 30-year-old boys out on a toot. It's an intriguing concept for a comedy-drama--and Beau Bridges and Ron Liebman are fabulously cast in the central roles--but neither Dixon nor director Douglas N. Schwartz offer much comment on the leading characters or on the journey they take (with an ending that frustratingly leaves us up in the air). These escapist episodes of bachelorhood are not exactly carefree--both men have a lot to answer for--so there isn't much to involve us other than the ultimate hangover to come. When reality sinks in, we've gotten the message long before the two buddies have. The depressing final act is obviously meant to make a point (don't let this happen to you!), yet Dixon also seems to be saying that life isn't "Easy Rider", and that 30-year-old men should be fiscally-responsible and not looking to spread their wings. ** from ****

A great movie nobody knows about

This appears to have been some kind of "homemade" movie, one of many to come from this period. (Like the 90s, everyone was making a movie in the 70s.) The sound and some of the editing is very crude. Other than that, this is a really good movie! It's not really a comedy, more like a drama with plenty of (light) comic moments. The characters are very interesting in what they do and say. Even if you dislike talky philosophical arty movies, like I usually do, I think you'll enjoy this. The movie also gives us a great taste of what the 70s were like.

This movie isn't available on video, and is only rarely screened on TV, so keep your eyes open for it, because you might not get a second chance.

    Great "road" film

Your three minutes are up (referring to a warning from telephone operator) is a true hidden gem. The story of two friends, one straight and square, trapped in a projected lifestyle with nothing to hope for in the future but material possessions, mortgages and wife that will make sure his life doesn't derail from that track,(as Ron Liebman's character said, "you'll be shooting hippies on sight") and the other, communicative, "don't think about tomorrow and have as much fun as you can" kind of guy, played beautifully by Ron Liebman, is both funny and sad, both entertaining and thought provoking, and the two leads, Bridges and Liebman give a fabulous performance. Both of them envy the life of another, and both are trying to escape from their own life by taking a road trip into "the great wide open", finding that there really is no escape. This film will cheer you up, and make you think about what the real point in life is, and after it ends, you'll be sitting in front of the TV for a while. It's hard to get, but that's what "hidden gem" means. Complaints about editing and stuff are from those who never watched or dislike the movies that were made before nowadays, when movies are all about editing or effects, and no story, especially the one that has any real human emotions in it. Films like this they just don't make anymore. Track down and enjoy!

    Thumbs up

Wonderful movie very few have ever seen.

Beau Bridges and Ron Leibman are at best of their careers.

Seemingly low budget (even for the 70s) great antidote to the ever present CG that pervades current movies (2013). Saw on late night TV in the early 80s and again late 90s.

Reminder of the early 70s movies like "Five Easy Piece" "King of Marvin Gardens" "The Last Detail" except without Jack Nicholson (for better or worse)AND with more dark humor.

Well worth going on demand from Netflix/U-verse or your local cable provider :).

Mike: And how are you today, Mrs Wilk?

Mrs. Wilk: You have been unemployed and collecting benefits for the past twelve weeks, haven't you, Mr. Robinson?

Mike: Ye... oo, wait... I didn't know it was that long. I'm sorry. I guess I have.

Mrs. Wilk: Could you tell me what you have done in that time to gain employment?

Mike: Sure. You people have sent me out on, er, various er job interviews. As a matter of fact, I was to one this morning. Not from you people but from some friends of mine who are in the industry...

Mrs. Wilk: Mr. Robinson, you are a claims adjuster and this office set up an interview for you with one of the most respected firms in the industry, Connecticut Casualty.

Mike: Yes, yes, a wonderful company; excellent benefits and all that. However, I really didn't feel that that was the particular...

      Mrs. Wilk: Mr. Robinson...

      Mike: Yes, Mam...?

Mrs. Wilk: We received an angry call from Mr. Delaney who said that you appeared in his office in Bermuda shorts, sweatshirt and sneakers. And noticeably under the influence of alcohol. Mr. Robinson, we are all adults here. I think the picture is quite clear. You have made absolutely no effort to get a job and, in fact, you have deliberately jeopardised your chances by irresponsible behaviour. I can see no other alternative than to cancel your unemployment benefits right now.

Mike: Now, wait a minute. You can't do that. How am I gonna live?

Mrs. Wilk: I can. And I must.

Mike: Erm, Mrs. WIlks, wait a minute will you? Now, you're quite accurate about me showing up drunk in that place. My mother's very sick...

Mrs. Wilk: I'm sorry. I am sorry, Mr. Robinson.

      Mike: You're sorry?

Mrs. Wilk: I have no other course.

Mike: You're not sorry. Don't give me that shit, that you're sorry. You couldn't be happier, taking away somebody's 75 bucks, like it was your money, huh? Well, I got news for you Mrs. WIlk: you're not supporting us, we are supporting you, with your snotty attitude and your stupid, plastic name tag and if it wasn't for people like these

[referring to the other people waiting]

Mike: you wouldn't have a job to go to and it'll be your turn to come here and kiss fucking ass for a lousy 75 bucks a week! Am I right?

      [the crowd respond positively]

Mike: . You're closing in, Goddammit, I knew you were closing in.

[the crowd erupt in applause; he exits]

      Mike: .
