When ABC cancelled the series in 1982, HBO considered purchasing the show, only to lose out to NBC, which promoted the show in ads stating "Same time, better network". However, NBC then cancelled it after one season.
According to writer, producer and director James Burrows, when Danny DeVito first auditioned for the part of Louie De Palma, he entered the room of writers and producers with the script, threw it on the table and said, "Who wrote this shit?" He was hired straight away for his sheer audacity and attitude.
Most of the Taxi cast appeared on Cheers (1982) as well; and vice versa. Ted Danson, George Wendt, Carol Kane, J. Alan Thomas, Rhea Perlman, and Christopher Lloyd all appeared on Taxi and Cheers. Danny Devito, who was married to Rhea Perlman at the time, never appeared on Cheers but was rumoured to be the basis for Nick Tortelli.
Before closing their doors for good in 1982, the Checker Motors Corporation, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, supplied cars to the series.
Onscreen couple Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman were a couple off screen as well. (And just as Louie and Zena plan to get married; Danny and Rhea did get married.)
Tony Danza: [name] Tony Danza used his own given name as the character in several TV series. He was Tony Banta on "Taxi," Tony Micelli on Who's the Boss? (1984), Tony Canetti on Hudson Street (1995), and Tony DiMeo on The Tony Danza Show (1997). He then hosted as himself on a talk show, also called The Tony Danza Show (2004).
