Prior to working on this series, William Windom and Lisa Gerritsen appeared as father and daughter on the series "Lancer" in a first-season episode entitled "The Great Humbug."

Jules Goldstone, who brought the rights on James Thurber's works, produced two unsold pilots before it became a series: Cristabel (The Secret Life of John Monroe) (1959) and The Country Mouse (1961). Goldstone was credited for the series under the job title "Thurber material by arrangement with Jules Goldstone".
