Billed as Sharon Tate's film debut by producer Martin Ransohoff, to whom she was under contract. She gets a special "introducing" credit in it. However, she already had appeared in several films, mostly in unbilled bit parts. These include one in Ransohoff's own production The Americanization of Emily (1964). Then he cast her in a major role in the British-made horror film Eye of the Devil (1966), but that film was greatly delayed and was not shown in the US or Britain until after "Don't Make Waves", so the latter was the first time audiences had seen her in a prominent role.

Sharon Tate told Roman Polanski that the happy atmosphere on this film was marred when a young stuntman (Bob Buquor) drowned after parachuting into the Pacific Ocean.
