फ़ीचर्ड समीक्षाएं
"Beyond Atlantis" (1973) is an oceanic adventure that combines "City Beneath the Sea" (1953) with the women-in-skin-bikinis of Hammer's "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" (1970). Like the latter, it has a barely-a-B-movie vibe, but it's more entertaining due to the superb location shooting and quality cast. The director knows how to tastefully shoot women (no pun intended) and it's one of the flick's highlights.
This could've been as good as "City Beneath the Sea" or "Mysterious Island" (1961), but more time needed spent on strengthening the (obviously) loose script. That takes time and time means money, which the producers regrettably didn't have. While this is a "bad movie," it's entertaining enough to check out.
The film runs 1 hour, 31 minutes, and was shot in the Philippines.
GRADE: C/C-
Fast Eddie and his crew beat up Manuel to find out where he got the pearls. He tells them that he got them from a lady as payment for taking her to an island. Fast Eddie and his crew go to the island and find tribe of people that appear to be half fish half human. They have weird raised eyeballs that look like ping-pong balls with black dots painted on them. They are led by a name, Neraus and his beautiful daughter who runs around the whole film in a skimpy bikini.
Neraus orders his daughter mate with one of the people who have come to the island for the pearls, as it's vital to the tribe. She helps Eddie and his crew find pearls, but so she can keep them long enough on the island so she can mate.
Beyond Atlantis is a very fun film as its 100% pure cheese. I laughed a lot and had a good time watching it. I'm a huge fan of Sid Haig, the actor who has made tons of great drive-in fare. It's always fun to see him. This film is only for fans of trashy campy films. Others beware.
The island is populated by some laughably bug eyed villagers(their "eyes" are masks/headdresses that look like they belong in a primary school Halloween parade) ruled over by the slinky blonde Syrene (Leigh Christian)who spends the entire film amply filling a brief bikini. They are accommodating of the outsiders initially, because they need Syrene to mate with one of them to insure the survival of the fish/half mer people/whatever.
Folks get greedy, natives get suspicious and betrayal, mayhem and general silliness ensues.
The underwater photography is of better quality than you'd expect, both female leads are attractive in skimpy sunwear, John Ashley is kept to a minimum of stinking up the joint, and Sid Haig gives us his usual delightful scene stealing.
In addition, for a PG film, "Beyond Atlantis" manages to hit a lot of exploitation touch points ( abundant skin showing, a Syrene vs. Katherine catfight, some piranha action, explosions, a giggle inducing underwater "mating" scene and Sig Haig's sleazy heavy delivering goofy machismo camp with style).
Lightweight and by no means a classic with a rather unsatisfying ending, "Beyond Atlantis" is still a fun little trifle of the drive in era, and worth watch if you have a few hours to spare.
This picture is directed by Eddie Romero (Savage Sisters) and stars Sid Haig (House of 1000 Corpses), Patrick Wayne (Big Jake), Leigh Christian (The Doll Squad), and John Ashley (The A-Team).
It's quite a unique and oddly assembled cast. The storyline is pure grindhouse of the era-a mix of ancient legend, treasure-hunting, and beautiful women. Sid Haig brings his usual playful, aloof energy that keeps things entertaining, while Leigh Christian is absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, the special effects are very dated-the "eye" sequence in particular had me laughing out loud. There's little to no nudity, and the film doesn't take itself too seriously, which works in its favor. I also enjoyed the ending.
In conclusion, Beyond Atlantis feels very much like a Roger Corman-style production of its time. It's nothing groundbreaking, but fans of grindhouse will find something to enjoy. I'd score it a 4.5/10 and only recommend it with the right expectations.
An adventure movie with thrills , emotion , shootouts , gorgeous photography and lots of underwater scenes. The tale is silly and laughable but effects and action are quite well . Some illogic parts in the plot are more than compensated for the excitement provided by the underwater images , the colorful coral reef and bikini-dressed mermaid Leigh Christian. It follows in the wake of the films directed by Kevin Connor of the 70s set in fantastic islands such as "Land that Time forgot" , "At the Earth's Core" , "Warlord of Atlantis" , "The People that Time Forgot" , usually starred Doug McClure or Patrick Wayne himself . An agreeable cast mostly formed by B-actors as John Wayne's son : Patrick Wayne , John Ashley , Sid Haig , George Nader and Vic Díaz , Eddie Romero's regular .
It displays a colorful cinematography that's the best factor of the movie , being shot on location in the Philippines Islands . This cheesy motion picture was professionaly directed by Eddie Romero , though has several flaws and gaps . This Philippino director usually collaborated with John Ashley and Roger Corman and he made a lot of films of exploitation and all kinds of genres as Terror, Women In Prison , Adventures , Wartime , Thrillers , outstanding the following ones : Black Mama White Mama , Savage Sisters , Terror is a Man , Day of the Trumpet, Mad Doctor of Blood Island , The Woman Hunt , Raiders of Leyte Gulf , Beast of Blood , Mad Doctor of Blood Island , among others . Rating : 5/10 . Passable and acceptable . The movie will appeal to adventure fans.

"At least we'd have had a picture that was a little more exploitable." He also thought that the extensive underwater footage slowed down the action, saying, "It's gorgeous. But watching it is like watching slow motion."
- गूफ़As the Atlantean procession is walking into the ocean at the end of the movie, a few of the extras are breaking formation and character to fiddle with their fake eyes and talk to each other after a wave catches them off guard.

Kathy Vernon: And where are you going to whisk me off to?
Logan: My place.
Kathy Vernon: And what would we do there?
Logan: We'd, uh, explore each other's minds.
Kathy Vernon: In the spirit of detached scientific curiosity, of course?
Logan: Not exactly, but you can look at it like that, if that's what it takes to turn you on.
