- Jesus Christ is born again on Earth. But his father is a hardcore Southern Baptist, and during his teen years, Jesus rebels, joining a biker gang and leading an LSD-fueled pilgrimage to "the West" to fight "the establishment."
- A man named J.C.Masters is riding a motorcycle. Blue jean bell-bottoms,long stringy hair, the open road. He's wearing a helmet that says J.C.
J.C. is a carpenter working on a construction site with his black friend David Little. The foreman makes fun of J.C.-his hair, his look, and the fact that he can't drive a nail.J.C.and David take a lunch break and smoke a joint on the job.The foreman catches them and orders them back on the job but J.C. walks off on the job instead J.C. comes home upset and his adoring former social worker girlfriend Kim shows him a marijuana plant to cheer him up. She calls it their baby and says it's female but J.C.still sulks. Now that he's unemployed,J.C. spends the day wandering around the house in his briefs and rubbing a mural and reading the paper. He reads the headlines: "Meat Unsanitary", "Women Held in Black Boy Slaying",and "War Victim".At some point, he reads from Genesis 4:20 and smokes another joint. Meanwhile Kim and David go to the unemployment office but can only get menial labor jobs. David agrees to take a job pulling up weeds not realizing that it means actual weeds not marijuana. Meanwhile,J.C. trips out and has a vision that involves two ladies, an apple, and some sensuous staring. Also tormenting J.C. are occasional visions of a "giant winking eye" that he perceives as the voice of God. Eventually, J.C. announces to the members of his gang at a campfire that night that he's had a holy vision and wants to spread messages of peace and love. His people dig the idea and agree to accompany J.C. on his journey and "be free." They bike through America and finally J.C. decides he wants to visit his hometown in Alabama. The small town is shocked and intimidated by these bikers and hippies and blacks and the store owner is a bit hostile until he recognizes J.C. from his youth there as a tough jock and the son of a fiery Baptist minister.David and his girlfriend Neffie are particularly threatening to the small town because they're black.J.C.and Kim and the others defend their black friends by explaining to those small-minded townsfolk just how the Unabridged Webster's Dictionary defines "negro". They head for the house of J.C.'s sister Miriam and her husband Carlton and little son Ben.Carlton isn't home. He's working as a gas pumper but Miriam and little Ben and his schoolmate are shocked and intrigued by these hippies and bikers. The boys emulate them on their bikes too. Good natured Miriam adapts to it though and even smokes a joint. They talk about how their right wing Evangelical Baptist father turned his church into almost a cult and then died nearly 20 years ago and their mother disappeared or died and J.C. left.J.C. apparently had visions of the big giant winking eye since he was young. There are a couple of hassles as one of J.C.'s hippie tribe gets a little too forceful trying to have his way with Miriam and J.C.almost beats him up but the guy apologizes and says he was just trying to spread the love and ends up making out with Miriam. Miriam's husband arrives and sees David and freaks out over a black guy on his property and they end up in a scuffle but David prevails and everyone breaks the scuffle up. Trouble really starts when redneck racist sheriff Grady Caldwell shows up with his mean-spirited deputy Dan Martin who is an old rival of J.C.'s from high school and resents losing a scuffle with him once.Dan always brags about learning martial arts during his tour of Vietnam and he and greedy have been discussing what to do about these long hairs and blacks and decided to check out and see what's going on and try to encourage them to leave soon without sparking any trouble from the press but Dan's resentment sparks a scuffle between him J.C. which Grady any others break up a Grady still advises them to leave replies that they're not here to hurt anyone but they won't let anyone push them around either. Disciple is the guitar playing minstrel of the group. J.C 's old high school sweetheart Rachel Myers is hanging around still carrying a torch for him too. Things come to a head when David tries to buy some dope in town and is locked up and beaten by Grady and Dan.They scoring David for dodging the draft but he says he was kept from Vietnam for health reasons. They tell David that J.C.'s father was a right-wing evangelical Baptist minister and J.C. was rumored to be following in his father's footsteps and had a bad temper just like his father. A rumor spreads that David's going to be lynched.Neffie is horrified and J.C.decides the lawmen mean business, and they need to do something. He decides he and the guys in his tribe will ride their bikes into town and distract the townspeople while he rescues David. In the jailhouse Grady is actually a little nervous about fallout from the World press from lynching David, although he wants to lynch him,and he's also worried about fallout from the press from any brutal violence toward the hippies but he and the townsfolk are willing to if they have to. J.C. and his gang ride into town to do battle with Grady,Dan,and the mob of hillbilly guys. The women stay back.J.C. tells his people to just distract the mob and they do,including being noisy and using chains to trip them, but Disciple and another biker are shot and killed. J.C. manages to infiltrate the temporarily deserted jailhouse although Rachel is there and terrified for his safety. He reassures her and manages to find the keys to the cell and rescues David. He tells him to take the sheriff's car out back while he goes out front to continue the battle, but Dan is waiting out back and shoots David dead.J.C. is devastated as the vengeful Dan baits him to come out. J.C. goes out and fights Dan and strangles him to death. He gets David's beads and Disciple's keys to his bike and gets out of there. He and his group reassemble at Miriam's house and he says they have to get back on the road and get out of town. Grady and his mob are on the way so while the others flee,J.C.,to Miriam's horror, distracts the lynch mob when they pull up at her house by dropping to his knees, raising his hands, and preaching a sermon as though they are his assembled congregation. The men become enraged at this long-haired hippie freak apparently blaspheming, and believing he is mocking their faith, they shoot him dead. Miriam and Kim are horrified. Grady disperses the mob and Kim holds J.C.'s dead body sobbing "Why?"
