The world's first daily nighttime soap opera.
From its launch on 13 March 1972 (described as "The night Australian television lost its virginity") until episode 694 in late 1974, the show was wholly recorded on monochrome videotape. Only 19 editions - including the first ten episodes - are known survive from this entire run, though everything subsequently taped in colour exits.
The building's fictional address was 96 Lindsay Street in the Paddington district of Sydney. In reality the exterior used was 81-83 Moncur Street in Woollahra, in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs.
Aside from drinks like Woodpecker Cider and Strongbow Keg Cider ("Cool & Strong!"), local vintners McWilliams Wines - based in Hanwood, New South Wales, and later purveyors for Bunny's Bar in The Young Doctors (1976) - were the principal suppliers for Norma's Bar, with a large overhead cream sherry ad ("the smoothest of them all") and prominently-positioned cradled glass flagons on the countertop, ensuring (in a definite sign of the times) that all wines were served at an even room temperature whether red, rosé or white. Wicker bowls of Arnott's crinkle cut potato chips were another fixture of the establishment.
