The film was entirely filmed in the director's tiny apartment, in Manhattan, New York City, using window dressing and costume designer props. Only three scenes were filmed later in a rented loft - the men's room, the Times Square, and the rainstorm scenes.

The film has a distinct personal touch, and it is generally accepted that Anonymous in the credits stands for just one person. Some said it was Andy Warhol, who lost his nerve to sign the film when completed, or Kenneth Anger. However, it was later revealed to have been James Bidgood who refused to sign the film as edited by the producers, before he had time to film more material.

The film had no script, but there was a storyboard that the director destroyed when he was denied the film's last cut, in 1971.

The film was shown in Paris for consecutive years, with a single weekly session.

The film was shot over a seven-year period (1963 to 1970).
