The film is an adaptation of the short story "The Islington Mystery" by Arthur Machen (1863-1947). Machen was in turn inspired by the 1910 murder of Cora Henrietta Turner. Turner was killed by her husband, the American homeopath Hawley Harvey Crippen (1862-1910). Crippen was nicknamed "Dr. Crippen" but was not a physician.
For her performance in this movie, Amparo Rivelles won two awards: the Golden Menorah Award for Best Actress and the Onix Award for Best Actress.
In her autobiography, Spanish-born Mexican actress Ofelia Guilmain stated that director Rogelio A. Gonzalez offered her the role of Mrs. Morales but the film's producers chose Amparo Rivelles because she was a movie star.
Of all her Mexican movies, this is Amparo Rivelles' favorite.
