BBC produced an English voice-over of the film which was first broadcast in three segments in 1964, adding greatly to its international success. Since it was aired in black-and-white, the film obtained an even more eerie atmosphere for viewers in the UK.
In 2002, BBC broadcast a radio-program about the film and its reception in the United Kingdom. The program is still available on the BBC website.
A segment of The Fast Show (1994), titled "The Singing Ringing Binging Plinging Tinging Plinking Plonking Boinging Tree" is a spoof of this film.
This film was one of the few former East German media products to be seen in the western world when Germany was still divided between the communist east and the free west, first being viewed by western audiences in the 1960s. Because it was made behind the Iron Curtain there is very little documentation about the history of the production.
