The line "Már a spejzban vannak az oroszok!" (The Russians are already in the pantry!) is among the most popular, and therefore most quoted lines of Hungarian cinema.

Voted as one of the "12 Best Hungarian Films 1948-1968" by Hungarian filmmakers and critics ("Budapest 12") in 1969.

The original script was a much more classic Soviet-style partisan film, but thanks to the ideas of Imre Sinkovits and the rest of the crew, it was soon changed into a war comedy, the very first in its genre in Hungarian cinema.

In an interview Imre Sinkovits claimed that he based the character of the corporal on his experiences as a 16 year old boy during the war. He described himself as a gambler, who had to make small cons and tricks to not to get captured by either side, and to survive the war.

In 1990, a sequel was planned, which would have followed the life of the Corporal between 1945-1990 (i.e. during the Communist regime) but soon the idea was scrapped.
