At one point Lt. Sanchez is walking out of the control room and gives a technician some orders. He replies, "Yes, sir, Lieutenant". Since Lt. Sanchez is female, the correct way to address her would have been "Yes, ma'am, Lieutenant".

This use of "sir" is gender neutral and is something done even today, and is usually done so that it doesn't imply that female officers are inferior to their male counterparts.
