When the diva of London's Albany Theater, an opera house, refuses to perform due to a mysterious series of murders, young chorus-singer Christine Charles (Heather Sears) is selected to sing the title role of Saint Joan: in "The Tragedy of Joan of Arc". The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. The novel was adapted for the film by British screenwriter John Elder (aka Anthony Hinds). It is the third movie based on Leroux's novel, preceded by The Phantom of the Opera (1925) and Phantom of the Opera (1943) and followed by The Phantom of the Opera (1983), The Phantom of the Opera (1989), The Phantom of the Opera (1990), The Phantom of the Opera (1991), Il fantasma dell'opera (1998), and The Phantom of the Opera (2004).

While the Phantom (now revealed to be poor composer Professor L. Petrie) watches from his "haunted box", "Saint Joan" is performed with Christine in the lead. As the opera draws to a close and Christine is presented with applause and flowers, a stagehand notices the dwarf (Ian Wilson) watching from the rafters and calls him out. In his effort to get away, the dwarf leaps onto a large chandelier hanging just over Christine's head, the added weight causing the rope to fray. Noticing the danger to Christine, the Phantom tears off his mask and jumps onto the stage to push Christine out of the way. The chandelier falls instead on the Phantom, killing him.
