- Jancsi: That would be convenient wouldn't it? You've made arrangements, certain plans to deliver me from my enemies into the hands of Herr Scheffler. You overlooked one thing only - I don't choose to leave my country.
- Michael Reynolds: Sir, you don't have a choice, your time is up.
- Jancsi: If that is so, Mr Reynolds, I'll die here.
- Michael Reynolds: Why do you have to die? What for? I don't believe in it. Look, I came here to save your neck and I'm going to do it, even if you don't want it saved.
- Jancsi: Whatever I do with my life is my own business. No one else's.
- Michael Reynolds: Oh, you don't understand. In an few days you won't have a life.
- The Count: We know our position better than you do.
- Michael Reynolds: No, you don't! Scheffler is a pipeline. If he says I've got two days to get you out, you've got two days. Now, you can wait here like sitting ducks or you can do something. But there's a way out. If you're reasonable, you'll take it.
- Jancsi: There's no profit for you, don't bother about that.
- Michael Reynolds: Alright, I'm being paid. I know you'd like it better if I was some great humanitarian who believed in your cause. Well, I don't even know what your cause is.
- The Count: That shouldn't surprise us.
- Michael Reynolds: Well, who does outside this room? You could yell your heads off, nobody'd hear you. They aren't listening. They're all like me, I promise you; they couldn't care less. Causes are outmoded. Everybody's learned to live by compromise. Why can't you?
- Jancsi: There isn't any compromise. To compromise is to doubt your own convictions. If they're worth having, they're unshakeable.
- Michael Reynolds: Convictions are fine, if you live.
- Jancsi: Mr. Reynolds, if I can live one day to save one person, that's enough.
- Michael Reynolds: But you can do more than that on the outside. Unless you're determined to die a a martyr. And a crackpot!
- [a man can be seen working at a desk. This is Sheffler. As he's working, he looks up to see someone entering his office. This is Michael Reynolds]
- Sheffler: Ah! My boy!
- [Sheffler stands up and approaches Reynolds to shake his hand]
- Sheffler: Good to see you!
- [Sheffler and Reynolds proceed to shake hands]
- Michael Reynolds: Herr, Sheffler. How are you?
- Sheffler: Good to see you. But you look exceedingly well! Exceedingly.
- Michael Reynolds: [sits down] Thank you.
- [as the film starts, Michael Reynolds can be seen looking into the window of a shop. As he's doing this, he notices the reflection of someone standing across the street. With that, he turns around and tosses the man something]
- Michael Reynolds: Here you go, pal.
- [Reynolds watches as the man catches it. After looking at him for a few seconds, Reynolds turns and walks off]
- [following his escape, Michael Reynolds can be seen on a plane with Julia and Jancsi. As he stands up, he sees a jubilant Sheffler standing in front of him]
- Sheffler: [holds out his hand] Good to see you, my boy.
- [Reynolds shakes Sheffler's hand and hugs him in relief before he sits down with Jancsi and Julia]
- [Michael Reynolds can be seen knocking on a door. After a few seconds, the door opens and a woman comes into view. This is Julia]
- Julia: Yes? What is it?
- Michael Reynolds: My name is Stevens. I'd like to talk to you.
- Julia: No, I can't see anyone.
- [Reynolds puts his foot in the doorway to prevent Julia from closing it]
- Michael Reynolds: Wait a minute, Julia.
- Julia: My name is not Julia. You have come to the wrong person.
- [Julia attempts to shut the door, but Reynolds grabs hold of it to prevent her from closing it. With that, he quickly enters and shuts the door behind him as Julia looks surprised]
- Michael Reynolds: Don't get excited.
- [Reynolds looks around to survey his surroundings]
- Michael Reynolds: I'm not gonna hurt you. I just want to talk.
- [Michael Reynolds can be seen at the apartment of Julia. After looking at Julia for a few seconds, he looks around as he observes his surroundings]
- Michael Reynolds: Well... now that you've asked me in, shall we sit?
- [Reynolds looks over at Julia, who just stares at him in silence]
- Michael Reynolds: Okay, take your time. I feel a little unsociable myself.
- [Michael Reynolds can be seen looking around Julia's apartment as the latter watches in silence]
- Michael Reynolds: You got any decent coffee? One thing I hate, it's bad coffee, and I just had the worst.
- Julia: [sharply] Get out.
- Michael Reynolds: Settle down, huh? If anybody's gonna be sore, it ought to be me.
- [Michael Reynolds can be seen speaking with Julia in the latter's apartment. Julia appears displeased with the former's behavior]
- Julia: Get out.
- [Reynolds looks at Julia for a few seconds before he grabs her by the arm. He then proceeds to walk her into another room before sitting her down in a chair]
- Michael Reynolds: Now, you sit there and relax.
- [Julia stares sharply at Reynolds]
- [Michael Reynolds can be seen interacting with Julia in the latter's apartment]
- Michael Reynolds: I've just about had it! All this runaround for a few questions. There must be an easier way.
- [Reynolds turns around and heads into the kitchen, where he prepares a cup of coffee]
- Julia: Who are you?
- Michael Reynolds: [sarcastically] I'm an international spy!
- Julia: [nodding] I thought you might be at first, but you behave more like an American gangster.
- [Michael Reynolds can be seen speaking to Julia under a bridge. They are partially obscured by the darkness]
- Michael Reynolds: Who is your friend?
- Julia: Did he frighten you?
- Michael Reynolds: That depends. I wouldn't want to repeat last night. Who is he?
- Julia: No one. A refugee like myself. He's called The Count.
- Michael Reynolds: The Count? That figures.
- [Under a bridge, Michael Reynolds can be seen speaking with Julia about The Count]
- Michael Reynolds: Is he your husband?
- Julia: No.
- Michael Reynolds: Then what's he so nervous about?
- Julia: If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand.
- Michael Reynolds: [softly] I see...
- [In the darkness under a bridge, Julia can be seen speaking with Michael Reynolds]
- Michael Reynolds: Something to do with your father?
- Julia: What do you know about him?
- Michael Reynolds: I know who he is.
- Julia: Why are you so interested in my father?
- Michael Reynolds: Everybody's interested in your father. He's a great man. That's why I want to meet him.
- [Michael Reynolds can be seen riding in a train compartment. Sitting next to him is Julia, who has disguised herself. She is also reading a book]
- Michael Reynolds: [sarcastically] That outfit, it's a dinger!
- [Julia looks at him and smiles before she continues reading her book]
- [while on a train, Michael Reynolds can be seen speaking with Julia, the latter who is in disguise and reading a book]
- Michael Reynolds: Now that you're here, I want you to know that I'm glad you decided to make the trip, Miss Heinrich. I think it can be mutually beneficial.
- [Julia looks at Michael, but doesn't say anything before returning to her book. Reynolds proceeds to look over at the man sitting across from them, who merely gives him a look of indifference]
- [at night, Michael Reynolds can be seen loitering on a bridge. As he's waiting, a man can be seen approaching him. This is The Count]
- The Count: Don't trouble yourself to wait, she isn't coming. You understand? She will not come.
- Michael Reynolds: Why?
- The Count: She has no wish to see you.
- Michael Reynolds: I'll wait.
- The Count: Let me give you some advice, Mr. Stevens. I'm a man who abhors violence. Yet you have ignored one serious warning, and renewed your persistence. Unless you stop now, you leave me no alternative.
- Michael Reynolds: But to... uh... kill me, huh?
- The Count: Reluctantly. I abhor violence. Good night, Mr. Stevens.
- [the Count turns and walks off while Reynolds watches him]
- [On a train, Michael Reynolds can be seen sleeping. Sitting next to him is Julia. At some point, he wakes up upon feeling the train coming to a stop at a station]
- Michael Reynolds: What's this?
- Julia: This is the border? Hegyeshalom.
- [at a train station, Julia can be seen walking towards an exit, when she recognizes a man standing near one of the doors. She stops and stares at him for a few seconds before Michael Reynolds walks up and takes hold of her arm]
- Michael Reynolds: Don't try it, Julia. You're with me, remember?
- [Michael Reynolds can be seen speaking with a few members of the Hungarian underground. Among them is Jancsi, who is prepared to question him. The Count is also present]
- Jancsi: Your name?
- Michael Reynolds: Robert Stevens.
- Jancsi: The truth, please. Your name.
- [Reynolds is silent as he and Jancsi stare at each other]
- The Count: Come, come, Mr. Reynolds. We know all about you.
- [Reynolds holds up his hands, which are bounded by handcuffs]
- Michael Reynolds: Then this... uh... initiation, is no mistake, huh?
- The Count: No mistake, Mr. Reynolds.
- [Michael Reynold is shown speaking to The Count, who is with a few members of the Hungarian Resistance]
- Michael Reynolds: Say, you get around. Don't you? Ah, yes. I remember you said you'd kill me. Is that why I'm here?
- The Count: Five are in favor. One undecided.
- [after an escape from the police, Michael Reynolds and Julia can be seen interacting with the members of the underground, including Jancsi]
- Jancsi: [embraces his daughter] Thank god you are here.
- Michael Reynolds: I have a message.
- Jancsi: Laszlo's arrest? We know about that. Now, we've got to move fast. We'll go separately. Hurry!
- [everyone else exits while Reynolds and Jancsi remain put]
- [Michael Reynolds and Jancsi can be seen preparing to leave their hideout with the other underground members. The Count is also present]
- Jancsi: You and I go last.
- The Count: Mr. Reynolds.
- [Reynolds looks at The Count for a few seconds before looking at Jancsi]
- Michael Reynolds: I'll be right there.
- Jancsi: Right.
- [Jancsi leaves and closes the door on his way out]
- [In an underground hideout, Michael Reynolds can be seen speaking with The Count]
- Michael Reynolds: Where are we going?
- The Count: We use a farmhouse in the country.
- Michael Reynolds: How far?
- The Count: By the back roads, 100 kilometers. Why? You have a better idea, Mr. Reynods?
- Michael Reynolds: It'll have to wait. It's too soon.
- The Count: Wait!
- [Reynolds stops and turns to look at The Count]
- The Count: Don't come with us!
- Michael Reynolds: [confused] Why not?
- The Count: They'll be looking for us. Alone, you might easily get away.
- Michael Reynolds: What's the point? Why are you telling me all this?
- The Count: I am offering you a way out. If you are caught with us, you die with us! A ridiculous farce, don't you agree?
- Michael Reynolds: Maybe not.
- The Count: What does that mean?
- Michael Reynolds: [shakes his head] I don't know... look... if you're finished, let's go. Huh?
- [Reynolds turns and exits the room. The Count watches him leave before he blows out a lamp and follows him out]
