- Jack Early: I'd go for this set-up. Nick has everything I like... including you.
- Nita Palmer: Well, if you're as bright as Nick thinks, you can get everything you like.
- Jack Early: Including you?
- Nita Palmer: That's not being bright.
- David Glover: What we're trying to do on this paper is to put out the best sheet we can. We're trying to do this together. We're not competing with each other. Understand?
- David Glover: He's got such a terrible, driving ambition.
- Ellen Bennett: But that's a virtue, isn't it?
- Nita Palmer: I don't like to be talked to in this way.
- Jack Early: I'm sorry. I'm just a growing boy.
- Nita Palmer: Well, if you want to continue growing, keep your mind on your camera.
- Jack Early: Look, Ellen, I've known a lot of guys that talked about decency and integrity. I knew a guy once, a wonderful old man, a genius with a camera, used to take pictures of trees and clouds and children playing in the sands at Ocean Beach. He tried to show me the beauty he saw in people and the world. He was a great man, and there were others: guys with paintbrushes, guys with typewriters. I even knew one who had a butcher shop. And you know what? They all starved to death. "Decency" and "integrity" are fancy words, Ellen, but they never kept anybody well fed. And I've got quite an appetite.
