There is one scene where a young Natalie Wood is supposed to run across a bridge. She was told that the bridge would collapse after she got to the other side, but there was an accident and the bridge collapsed while she was still on it. She broke her wrist and it never healed properly. She always wore a bracelet to hide the lump left behind.

This was the movie that caused Natalie Wood to be gravely afraid of water, due to the scene where the bridge collapsed under her feet, causing her to fight for her life as the director had the crew continue to film. She broke her wrist as she fought to hang on to what was left of the bridge as the water raged and tore at her body.

The failure of the original copyright holder to renew the film's copyright resulted in it falling into public domain, meaning that virtually anyone could duplicate and sell a VHS/DVD copy of the film. Therefore, many of the versions of this film available on the market are either severely (and usually badly) edited and/or of extremely poor quality, having been duped from second- or third-generation (or more) copies of the film.

After and extensive talent search at 4-H clubs across the U.S., ten year-old Jeanne LaDuke from Mt. Vernon, Indiana was chosen to play Jessie. She shared a tutor on the set with Natalie Wood who was about the same age.
