Yasujirô Ozu regular Chishû Ryû has a small role towards the end of the film as a fellow passenger on board a ship, playing an uncredited "Man on Boat".

Dekigokoro (1933) won the Kinema Junpo Award for best film, the second of three consecutive years an Yasujirô Ozu film won, following Otona no miru ehon - Umarete wa mita keredo (1932) and preceding Ukigusa monogatari (1934).

In 1933, Yasujirô Ozu was at the mid-point of his lifetime output---this film was his 29th out of a total of 54. Dekigokoro (1933) was just one of three masterpieces he filmed during that year (Tôkyô no onna (1933) and Hijôsen no onna (1933) being the other two). With this film, Ozu initiated a series of works that focused on the lives of the working poor.
