Second of three films in MGM's pairing of Buster Keaton and Jimmy Durante as a comedy team. The other pictures were The Passionate Plumber (1932) and What - No Beer? (1933).
Buster Keaton and Hedda Hopper, first and fifth billed in this film, died on same day, February 1, 1966.
Three years after its first appearance in The Hollywood Revue of 1929 (1929), the song "Singin' in the Rain" is played and referred to by Jimmy Durante. Although the characters imply the song was famous at the time, it wasn't; Gene Kelly's performing it in Singin' in the Rain (1952) gave it its worldwide fame that continues to this day.
Despite an onscreen copyright statement, a copyright was never registered; the movie is in the Public Domain.
According to the AFI Catalog entry for this film, increased costs caused this film to lose $33,000. Because of this, MGM production boss Irving Thalberg forced producer Buster Keaton to take a 30% pay cut on his next feature, What - No Beer? (1933) as compensation to the studio.
