- Elizabeth: What's a lawyer?
- Edward Morgan: Well, if you ever get into trouble, a lawyer is a person who gets you out of trouble.
- Elizabeth: Oh, my. I could use one almost every day!
- Elizabeth: Can I have my surprise first?
- Edward Morgan: Yes, indeed you may. Here you are, young lady, a string of pearls.
- Elizabeth: Pearls? They look just like those little stones on the beach.
- Mary Blair: Elizabeth!
- Edward Morgan: Do you like them?
- Elizabeth: I'd really rather have a pair of roller skates.
- Edward Morgan: Well, we'll throw those in for good measure.
- Mrs. Denham: Do you know why you are here this time?
- Elizabeth: Yes, Ma'am.
- Mrs. Denham: Then tell me why.
- Elizabeth: Don't *you* know?
- Aunt Genevieve: I have every reason to believe that Jimmy Rogers means to propose to Mary before the summer is over.
- Edward Morgan: How do you know that?
- Aunt Genevieve: I looked at him.
- Aunt Genevieve: Edward Morgan, insanely jealous and acting like a sixteen-year-old Romeo! Oh, this is the happiest day of my life!
- Aunt Genevieve: Edward, you may as well admit that you're in love with Mary. Why don't you tell her so?
- Edward Morgan: Haven't you heard the news, Aunt Genevieve? It just so happens Mary is engaged to Jimmie Rogers.
- Aunt Genevieve: Have you ever told her that you love her?
- Edward Morgan: How would you like it if you and I got to be very, very good friends?
- Elizabeth: I don't think I would like it, sir.
- Elizabeth: Oh, my duck does a wonderful trick. My duck can lay an egg.
- Mrs. Higgins: And just what is so wonderful about that?
- Elizabeth: Well, can *you* lay an egg? (pause)... Oh, excuse me.
- Mrs. Higgins: Under the circumstances, I have made every allowance for you, but when you bring animals into the dormitory, I must act.
- Elizabeth: That's what my daddy and mommy used to do!
- Mrs. Higgins: What?
- Elizabeth: Act!
- Edward Morgan: [on a painting] Just suppose the figure of that lovely child should suddenly come to life. Suppose it smiled at you and waved its hand. What would you do?
- Aunt Genevieve: I'd call a doctor!
- Edward Morgan: From now on, she's going to have all the lovely things in life, just because she has a right to them.
- [both sobbing]
- Mrs. Higgins: Henrietta, what are you blubbering about?
- Mrs. Denham: I can't help it. I'm so happy.
- Mrs. Higgins: There's no need to be sentimental.
- Mrs. Denham: Well, what are *you* crying for?
- Mrs. Higgins: Why shouldn't I? Why can't I be happy, too?
- Aunt Genevieve: Well, I think I will send for that doctor.
- Edward Morgan: I should if I were you! And before the doctor arrives, allow me to be the first to congratulate you.
- Aunt Genevieve: Congratulate me for what?
- Edward Morgan: My dear, you're about to become a mother.
- Elizabeth: Mary said that I was going to live in Jimmy's house. Does that mean that Jimmy's getting married to me, too?
- Elizabeth: Uncle Edward, I don't want to get married to Jimmy.
- Edward Morgan: Well, why not?
- Elizabeth: Because I want Mary and me to get married to you.
- Edward Morgan: Curly, you're a designing woman, you know that, don't you?
- Edward Morgan: [singing] Curly Top! You little bundle of joy! Curly Top! You're like a wonderful toy!
- Edward Morgan: I've got a friend that ...
- Elizabeth: Oh, I bet that isn't true.
- Edward Morgan: What?
- Elizabeth: You said you had a friend. I bet you have *lots* of friends.
