- Robert, a young steelworker, lives with his family and George, a good friend who has invented a new method of refining steel and promises Robert that they will split the proceeds if they sell the process to their employer. Robert goes to the company's board of directors and receives what he considers to be a good offer, but his wife June doesn't think it's enough. She talks to the board and persuades them to make George the company president. Now that he's rich, Robert becomes convinced that his wife is having an affair with George, and he embarks on his own affair with a sophisticated, attractive--and ambitious--woman.—frankfob2@yahoo.com
- Robert Holton, his wife June, and their two-year-old son Bobby live in a Pennsylvania steel mill town. Robert is the foreman of the Paine Steel Mills, but his wife is ambitious and is continually urging him on to greater achievements. George Rand, an inventor, lives with the couple. When George falls behind in his board, he offers June half-interest in his forthcoming invention; to make steel by a revolutionary process. June accepts the deal and sponsors George in the purchase of materials for his experiments. She keeps the agreement from her husband for fear he will berate her for her spending. When George secures valuable patents, Robert offers them to his company. The superintendent attempts to secure the patents by offering Robert a better job. But then June visits the company's owners, who think she is "just a woman" and should be easy to handle. Instead, she drives a hard bargain. Robert is made president of the company, and June and George are given a retainer of a million dollars, plus a large royalty for each ton of steel manufactured. Months pass, and June and Robert begin to drift apart. Success has been too much for Robert. With his newfound wealth, he and June visit New York, where he becomes involved in an affair with a notorious actress, Clarice Clement. Clarice obtains photographic evidence suggesting that June has been having an affair with George. Robert is about to be given custody of Bobby when June, determined to keep Bobby, proclaims that George, not her husband, is the actual father of the child. During a recess in the divorce proceedings, Robert begins to wonder how Clarice obtained her photographic evidence. The actress admits she had planted a photographer outside his wife's window. When June had gone to bed, an ape, borrowed from a menagerie, had been sent into her room. June had screamed and George had run to her rescue. The photo had been taken as George held June in his arms. When the proceedings resume, Robert reveals the conspiracy and requests that he, along with Claire and her accomplices, be sentenced. Instead, Robert and June are reconciled.
