The Astute Producer

The 37 year old Cecil B. DeMille was only concerned about what his audience was willing to consume. This film is a classic example of that because it demonstrates through his leading lady how the way you dress reflects who and what you want to be. The middle classes were obsessed with this idea.

Cecil B. DeMille originally wanted Gloria Swanson for the female lead. Swanson was still under contract to Triangle Studios who refused to loan her out to Paramount. When Triangle dissolved later in 1918, Swanson terminated her contract and signed with Paramount.
