Unusual and very sweet

I don't think this is much of a comedy, though there are definitely smile worthy scenes and moments and the entire plot is rather absurdly enjoyable. It is a touching little oddball movie that is quite a pleasant ride, literally and figuratively. The cast is also good, particularly the three leads. I had never heard of it before stumbling upon it, but I'm glad I did.

death and sex and all the rest

Daniel Murphy (Michiel Huisman) is flying to Ireland for his mother's funeral. He's the only one left to care for his autistic brother Louis (Samuel Bottomley). He needs to go to NYC for a new job but Louis is unwilling to leave home. Added to the complication, the elderly man sitting next to him on the plane dies. Due to a name mix up, Daniel is assumed to be the dead man's next of kin. The brothers are joined by Mary Sullivan (Niamh Algar) on their road trip as they deliver the body to his burial in Northern Ireland. Situation arises that police Detective Donall Crowley (Colm Meaney) is in pursuit of the trio.

The premise is manufactured. The story would be easier to transport their mother rather than a complete stranger. I'm still not sure about connecting the delivery with moving to New York. At its core, this is a simple quirky road movie and I like these actors. I like these actors and these characters. It has the quirkiness of an Irish dark comedy. It's death and sex and all the rest.

If you have time, and liked the trailer.. maybe watch it at a higher speed.

It's certainly not the best movie I've seen this year, but it has a lot of heart in it, and lots of messages and lessons to give in a well-crafted package. And while it lasts around 1 hour and 40 minutes, it felt longer to me.. like a tv series of sorts. I was half-way there when I started to wonder how much was left. It's quite a bit of drama! But somehow felt "childish".. yet very realistic. The characters are not those you'd easily fall in love with, and their interactions are not as memorable. And some of their choices are questionable, but it's that sort of film that makes me wonder how I'd react if I was in their shoes.

Still! It's a plot I've never seen before.. and got "out of hand" at times, which I appreciate, because it's better to be surprised than bored.

Just wished the movie had more landscapes or better shots, to at least fall in love with the island.

A morbidly delightful comedy

Though the subject matter may be a little dark, the film handles it in a light hearted manner that is still respectful to the dead. The story is hilarious, and touching as well. The beautiful Irish scenery is on the showcase as well. I really enjoyed this morbidly delightful comedy.

Buried amid the big releases

Very slow and dull start but I gradually warmed to the characters to really care about what happened. A road trip with a coffin as a man, his autistic brother and a random woman they meet head off to make sure a man gets buried in his rightful place with hapless police in pursuit. Gentle viewing released without little fanfare which is a pity as its a charmer. Samuel Bottemley in particular is excellent. Irish road trip with a bid to Rainman.

A feel good movie about death

I love Niamh Algar when she plays the girl next door roles. Simple, relaxed, no edge.

The Irish scenery is impressive too. It's a road movie across the island or Ireland (and a bit of New York).

Daniel and Louis are also likeable characters while Colm Meany leads the chase to track them down.

It's a likeable film that the family could watch (if you omit the swearing that the Irish are prone to using).

There is humour there but it's rarely laugh out loud stuff but the characters are credible and you can care about them plus there are a few great tunes too.

This will resonate with me as we buried my dad in the day this is said to have happened but our occasion wasn't quite so eventful.

A feel good movie about death. How very Irish to be sure.

No one thought it was like Rain Man???

I'm amazed reading through all the other user reviews, many which point out a similarity or outright remake of foreign films, that no one saw the similarity to Rain Man.

There is also a LOT of criticism of the directing, but I thought the multiple angles of scenes elevated the movie above where it otherwise would have been. I think the director did a great job.

And the acting is just great from all involved, this is definitely a classy film, much like what we used to get in cinemas in the 70's and 80's before all the superhero blockbuster series pushed them out.

Finally, I watched it because it is set in Ireland. Any movie that showcases that beautiful country would have a hard time being bad. And this one looks great!

Autistic representation done almost right and Epic

Though Samuel Bottomley is not autistic, so far as we know and does not have the same traits as Louis, he portrays and is portrayed in a positive light and it tackles the inherent ablism of society. Though we see a Temple Grandin poster, who though in some circles lorded suggested that a cure should be found for those with higher level support needs that herself which is problematic, he says that no autistic person is the same and there is a narrative about how he should get to decide his future even if he is scared of things others aren't and living alone may be difficult and passing school so also, he still get to live his own life. He isn't seen as babyish but a guy with different needs. Big thumbs up for that aspect. Then we have the awesomeness that is the twisty and turny plot, Colm Meany's face and the differing perspectives and heart rending moment which will make you cry. Mary is a character who is well matched to Louis and Daniel bringing out their beauty and complexity and can be compared to them in this regard too. No character is without a role or some form of basic personality and everybody's morals are on show. Its indie, funny, sweet and a worthwhile watch.

A romp corpus delicti style

This is a fun movie about some serious topics. The top one, in my book, was doing the right thing - and to hell with that others think.

The second most serious topic was doing the right thing for someone you love but don't understand - at all. And who frustrates the hell out of you.

In the meantime, you're getting a ton of laughs at all sorts of other peoples expense - mostly the Garda.

This is not your Hallmark movie with an accent - it's a fun movie that looks at things differently.

Enjoy it - and learn!! Oh - and enjoy the Irish countryside while you're at it.

Such a disappointment!

The story is good but directing made the movie boring and not enjoyable at all. Good cast but after half an hour it was painful to continue.

a ''dead''comedy/drama

Its an emotional, hidden gun hormonal and autistic irish attempt to make the necrolian parts of our life set under the spotlight of humour. its solitude and brotherhood and womanhood, its funeral fugitives and fish&chip shop armed robberies, so if you can make sense of irish dialect, then be my guest, i should really had some cc's to lean on.

its a rather dead comedy though, i giggled a bit, and hung on till the end due to some rather good acting, and wishing a certain coffin to blow of a car and some nice music here and there.

its for sure a fact that the predemented grumpy old man will forget this flick pretty fast anyway, because it lacks the spikes a comedy shall have and the speed of action are low and the drama story not so good. its a provincial made product and irish film have had better films made than this. but its a recommend anyway because its airish

Generous 5 * review due to good story

I really like what the story of this movie was. Some good actors and seemed well produced.

Unfortunately like most Irish films, its is predictable, over simplified and over acted. There's no glue to hold the pages together.

I liked it and it's worth watching. About 15 mins too long.

Hilarious, entertaining and touching

I loved this quirky road movie. As with lots of fiction, once I suspended shades of disbelief (as when the elderly Padraig Murphy, who is transporting his dead brother on the plane from the USA to Ireland for burial, dies on the plane, but before he names the passenger next to him, coincidentally called Daniel Murphy (Michael Huisman), as his next of kin), I relaxed into the mould of the film. The acting is very good throughout. Daniel's "brother" Louis (Samuel Bottomley) sensitively portrays an autistic personality and the plot is peppered with comic vignettes including the bonny and clyde scene with the impetuous Mary (Niamh Algar) and the toy gun at a take away. There are magical landscape scenes along the way, some probably done with drones. Overall a hilarious, entertaining and touching movie.

Aoife Crehan made a somewhat simple and unbelievable first film.

The Last Right is a new comedy drama film directed and written by Aoife Crehan, the director of the short film Empty.

In the film, lawyer Daniel Murphy (Michiel Huisman) travels from New York to Ireland for his mother's funeral. Daniel now takes responsibility for his autistic brother Louis (Samuel Bottomley), as well as responsibility for the body of Padraig (Jim Norton), the man who sat next to him on his flight. Daniel would love to just go back to New York, but it doesn't feel right to put all these responsibilities aside. For example, he decides to go on a road trip through Ireland with his brother and the budding undertaker Mary (Niamh Algar), to bury Padriag in his way and thus keep Louis and Mary happy. Along the way, they encounter many different obstacles, which they have to get through together.

This film is for Aoife Crehan her first real film that she has directed and written. This is reflected in twists that could have been written smarter or differently, to convey the film a bit better. The characters make stupid decisions, which makes the film less believable and makes it feel a bit unnecessarily long-winded. The movie eventually comes across as a simpler version of the movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

Most of the cast also come across as a bit simple because of Aoife Crehan's starting script as characters who don't think carefully about decisions they make in the film. Samuel Bottomley does come out well as someone with autism. Other actors are only in the movie for unnecessary extra scenes, which try to make the movie funnier.

Solid Serious Comedy

The Last Right: Daniel Murphy (Michael Huisman) is flying home from the US to attend his mother's funeral when it turns out the guy next to him Padraig Murphy (Jim Norton) is bringing his brother back to Ireland to bury him. The quirkiness of this serious comedy kicks in right away as Padraig dies on the flight and has named Daniel as his next of kin. It looks as if Daniel has talked his way out of this quandary and he makes his way to Clonakilty where his brother Louis (Samuel Bottomley) lives. Louis is an autistic teenager still at school and Daniel will now be responsible for him. The corpse of Padraig follows Daniel (via the Garda) and at Louis's urging he agrees to transport the body to Rathlin Island, at the very other end of the Island of Ireland. A road movie ensues as Daniel and Louis are joined by an eccentric mortician, Mary (Niamh Algar) in their journey.

There are perhaps too many odd characters in the film as a Detective Superintendent (Colm Meaney) sets off in pursuit of the trio after a misunderstanding with a pellet gun results in them being perceived as a criminal gang. Serious relationship questions are teased out as Daniel wants Louis to move to the USA but Louisa doesn't wish to lose his girlfriend. An awkward, troubled affair starts to develop between Daniel and Mary. There is no stereotyping of Autism and though Rain Man is referenced it is used to develop a conversation on how there are many points on the spectrum and Louis is an individual with his own strengths. There is also a major plot reveal which influences the viewers understanding of the narrative.

A solid drama/comedy written and directed by Aoife Crehan. 8/10.

Nice idea, unnecessarily complicated script

It's easy to Monday morning quarterback this type of thing, but I think they tried to accomplish too much-too many different relationships, too many different side plots, too many characters and relationships. If they had been able to winnow it down and develop each of those fewer parts more completely, I feel like it would have been a much better film.

Like so many modern day films it feels like producers, in an effort to reach a wider audience, insist on story lines that could each be a film of their own. And in doing so, create plot distractions that keep the audience from getting invested in the core story.

Good story but fails to deliver.

There are a couple of big names in this Irish rom com, namely Brian Cox and Colm Meaney is supporting roles, which was part of the reason I watched this. Alas, this film meanders along like the Volvo the main characters are travelling in for the full 106 minute run time.

I can't help but feel Michiel Husmain is miscast in the role as Daniel Murphy. He plays an up and coming New York tax lawyer who returns home to Ireland after the death of his mother, but I find he lacks any emotional attachment to the character.

Niamh Algar is very watchable as Mary, but even she struggles with the script.

A TOUCHING, HILARIOUS LOOK AT FAMILY, FRIENDS & DOING THE RIGHT THING

A thoughtful portrayal of some sensitive topics with many hilarious moments! This film has something for everyone all wrapped up in one sweet package and the scenery topped that off with a bow. I found it to be a realistic representation of a differently abled individual. The acting was superb and I found the plot to be lively and captivating. No complaints whatsoever & well worth the rental price!

Very lightweight dramedy

The characters were very cliched. The stereotypical 'boy gets girl, boy loses girl...' but the 'boy loses girl' part was way too forced to feel believable. The autistic parts copy directly from 'Rain Man', which they even reference in the movie. I guess it's an homage? It just felt silly.

If you're really desperate on a Saturday afternoon and want to see a somewhat amusing Colm Meaney acting like a mean Sheriff, go for it, I guess. But only if you're the kind of person who reads Harlequin romances by the dozen. It's very forgettable.

The plot was cliched, I predicted just about everything that happened, except for how bad the male protagonist turned on the romantic interest for no reason.

Soft story and needed stronger acting perhaps!

This is my first review on IMDB and I think platforms like this should be analysed by directors, cinematographers, story writers in understanding what people really see and think.

First of all the movie is copy of 'Karwaan' starring Irfan Khan, which was released in August 2018. This was remake of South Indian film 'Aedan: Garden of Desire', which was released in Feb 2018.

Michiel Huisman, a fine actor overall, I think lacked to show that one moment where he felt he lost his mother. He played the character from the outside and did not soak the emotions or feelings one would get when a person dies and secondly, the blunder, when the coffin gets exchanged.

The sense of comic relief was more of a scene created to introduce laughter rather than timing that is required within the scene.

Overall I give this movie 5/10...
