Atypical

It's nice to watch a movie about a black man in America immersed in black culture that isn't centered on violence and hip hop music. Kudos to Mamoudou Athie and Courtney Vance for superior acting.

Unexpected pleasure

I live in France so can understand the obsession some have with wine. Why such an overall low rating? This was beautifully acted with a believable open ending. No rush at the end to tie things up. It was great to watch a black film without a feeling of dread.

We really enjoyed this movie! It was very realistic, unpredictable, BEAUTIFULLY acted, well written, funny in many moments without trying and very touching. Very, very well done and a breath of fresh air.

Great foodie movie.

This is right up there with other great foodie movies. Every character has tons of charm and charisma and every joke is just right.

A corker

This is not a movie about wine or becoming a sommelier although there are aspects of that. It is a movie about relationships, family life and respect and love. A movie bout ambition and fulfilling dreams that both you have and others have for you. The characters seemed normal and there is so much going on that is relatable. Highlight for me was the terrifically chosen soundtrack. I really enjoyed this.

All of the wines mentioned in the film are commercially available and can be bought for a drinkalong to the film. Also the "grid" mentioned is the actual one used for wine exams.

When Elijah's father is helping Eli study for his exam, he asks Eli to name the wine regions of the Rhone Valley. At this point, Eli is a year into his studies, but he mispronounces most of the regions, including the 2 most famous ones of the northern Rhone, Cote Rotie and Hermitage. Any master sommelier student would not make these mistakes.
