Karpen died on Monday, April 28. In 2024, he had been diagnosed with a form of brain cancer called glioblastoma, detailing the extent and severity of his condition in a piece in Deadline.

Hollywood has faced increasing scrutiny over the past decade over how the business works behind the scenes, even down to the treatment of the underlings serving Tinseltown's all-powerful executives. There have even been narrative films about the headline-making subject, such as She Said (2022) and The Assistant (2019), and the excellent current HBO series, The Franchise. But 30 years ago, Hollywood was also turning the lens on itself, with meta features like Swimming with Sharks. In the satirical comedy-drama, Kevin Spacey plays an esteemed but abusive producer who treats his latest assistant (Frank Whaley), as expected, like garbage.

Decades later, the topical film was adapted to the small screen for a series of the same name, starring Kiernan Shipka and Diane Kruger. Exclusive: Vertical has acquired North American rights to the neo-noir The Long Game, based on the acclaimed short story by New York Times bestselling author Janet Fitch (White Oleander), slating it for release in theaters and on demand in 2025.

Marking the directorial debut of Jace Anderson, who wrote the script with husband Adam Gierasch, The Long Game sees Oscar nom Kathleen Turner return to the genre in which she burst upon the scene with Body Heat, alongside Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children), and newcomer Sekai Abenì.

Abenì plays Holly Sloan, who needs a break. When she meets and falls for grifter Richard Metzger (Haley), it’s not quite love at first sight, but perhaps an opportunity to help her career. And all Holly has to do is pull a little con on ’80s starlet Mariah McKay (Turner), a rich recluse who has faded into a Norma Desmond-like obscurity.

In its first few years, it was involved with the likes of Eye In The Sky, Captain Fantastic, The Lost City Of Z and Beasts Of No Nation. On the surface, it’s looking tougher and tougher to get the films it’s backing to break through at the box office, but thankfully, that’s not stopping the Bleecker Street team from trying.

Exclusive: Oscar-nominated singer-songwriter Björk previewed her manifesto from her new movie Cornucopia at Climate Week today.

The 16x Grammy nominee and Cannes Film Festival-winning actress is the creative director on the feature which is in post. The Cornucopia concert was filmed live in Lisbon, Portugal, and it illustrates the singer’s activism to address the climate crisis. Most recently, she collaborated with Rosalía on a song titled “Oral” and dedicated 100% of the proceeds to fund a series of legal actions aimed at combating intensive farm fishing. Level Forward shared the news today at their Soho House More to Talk About Residency.

Palme d’Or winning director Ruben Östlund’s next film The Entertainment System Is Down has been awarded €500,000 in production support from Berlin-Brandenburg’s regional film fund.

It is one of 30 feature films and series projects, from directors such as David Wnendt and Ulrike Ottinger, to share more than €7.2m in Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (Mbb)’s latest funding round.

Phlippe Bober’s Berlin-based Essential Filmproduktion received the €500,000 for Östlund’s second English-language production The Entertainment System Is Down, starring Daniel Brühl, Kirsten Dunst and Keanu Reeves. The long gestating project is set on a long-haul flight whose inflight entertainment system breaks down.

If you’re going to remake a classic Stephen King adaptation, you’d better do it right. Nobody’s ever topped Brian De Palma’s original “Carrie,” no matter how hard they tried. “It: Chapter One” knocked it out of the park, but “It: Chapter Two” brought it back into the park and poured manure on it, so they more-or-less cancel each other out. The TV mini-series remake of “The Shining” isn’t as bad as everyone remembers, but let’s not go nuts. It’s pretty grim when the 2019 version of “Pet Sematary” is your gold standard, since quality-wise even that’s just a lateral move.

Julia Garner’s new home is not quite what she expected in the first trailer for Paramount+’s Rosemary’s Baby prequel feature, Apartment 7A.

The psychological horror movie from director Natalie Erika James hits the streaming service and digital VOD on Sept. 27. The cast includes Dianne Wiest, Kevin McNally, Jim Sturgess, Marli Siu, Andrew Buchan, Rosy McEwen and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

Apartment 7A focuses on Terry Gionoffrio (Garner), an aspiring dancer in New York City who suffers an injury and moves into a luxury apartment building called the Bramford with an affluent couple (Wiest and McNally). After a Broadway producer (Sturgess) offers her a path to fame, Terry has an evening she can’t quite remember and suspects that something evil inhabits her apartment and the building itself.

“There’s something wrong with these people,” Garner says ominously in the trailer that shows her character’s concerns mounting.

There are several similarities between the Catholic Church and the film industry. Among them is a tendency to let powerful people get away with unconscionable behavior. In that insidious overlap, director Joshua John Miller finds the heart of “The Exorcism,” an ambitious social commentary that commingles Hollywood’s penchant for wrongdoing with the abuses of the Vatican for a unique portrait of an actor unraveled.

On the one hand, it’s a mediocre genre movie with a title as mundane as it is misleading. On the other hand, even as a muddy character study making only the weakest attempts to scare, “The Exorcis-m” is still a bigger treat for fans of “The Exorcis-t” than its recent flop sequel, “The Exorcist: Believer.”

Even when making allowances for Roman’s (Sidney Blackmer) understandable delight at seeing his plan come to fruition, that’s a lot of expectation to put on a newborn, no matter who his father might be. Unfortunately, the sequels chronicling Adrian’s rise to power didn’t quite live up to those expectations. Neither the 1976 TV movie Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby, in which Patty Duke subs in for Mia Farrow, nor original author Ira Levin’s follow-up book Son of Rosemary (1997) manages to deliver what Roman promised.

Few horror movies in the last several decades have left quite as much a psychological scar as "Rosemary's Baby" from 1968, a widespread cultural obsession among genre fans that has now led to a prequel film called "Apartment 7A," which has long been in the works and finally has a release window.

We first heard about "Apartment 7A" back in 2022, which was meant to tell the story of the eponymous apartment before Rosemary Woodhouse ever moved in and experienced the story's awful events. First told in author Ira Levin's best-selling novel, the main setting of that old, eerie-looking building on Central Park West ranks high among the likes of the Overlook Hotel from "The Shining," the Nostromo in "Alien," and other famous horror locales. Now, we're finally getting an origin story -- of sorts -- with ties going all the way back to the controversial Roman Polanski-directed classic.

Ozark star Julia Garner has been cast in the upcoming horror film Weapons. Weapons is an multi-story horror epic surrounding the tale of a series of disappearances of high school students in a small town. The horror film is from emergent director Zach Cregger, who is known for his previous work on Barbarian.

As per Collider, Weapons has now cast Garner in one of the lead roles. The nature of Garners part has yet to be revealed, as much of the specifics of Weapons plot are still under wraps.

Will Weapons Be As Successful As Barbarian?

While the nature of her character remains unknown, the Ozark actress is a great choice for the horror film.
