In 2013 writer/director Tara Miele and her husband survived a car crash together. For a brief moment, Tara wasn't sure if she was alive, so it became the inspiration for writing this script.

According to Sienna Miller, switching the narrative from the past to the present and back during most of the scenes was the most difficult professional thing she ever had to do.

The working title of the script was "Love Story", but finally Tara Miele found the words "wander darkly" in a Lord Byron poem.

In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is celebrated on or around November 1, but it has a much less solemn tone than All Saints' Day in other parts of the world and is portrayed as a holiday of joyful celebration rather than mourning.

In an interview, Tara Miele says the most challenging aspect of being a writer/director is the fact that you're at the same time the person who creates the problems and the person who has to solve them.
