Dira Paes said of being cast in the title role: "I didn't take that as an invitation. I felt intimated [to be in the role]. I already knew her story as I'm part on an anti-slavery NGO. I believe that brought me close to Pureza."
Director Renato Barbieri has pointed out that the story, "unfortunately, could have happened today as of 2022". Pureza's home state of Maranhão hold the statistic record of cases of contemporary slavery. Three victims were rescued from the city of Balsas in May 2022, close to this film's premiere. They were discovered in the same conditions depicted in the film.

According to Dira Paes's the script started with a quotation from the real Pureza, stating that someone vowed that "one day she'd be seen by the world". When Paes met Pureza, the woman complemented that "the eyes of such world is cinema".
