Liam Neeson in Absolution (2024)

Absolution

NOT your usual action gangster movie AT ALL. This is a subtle DRAMA.

BEWARE: all you Liam Neeson action fans, this is a subtle DRAMA and NOT a hardhitting gangster movie AT ALL. Best suited for an arthouse movie audience!

The good: Liam Neeson is still starring in solid movies at his age. He is still convincingly portraying these old gangster characters with a heart. And this story is all about ageing and nearing the end of ones life and trying to heal family bonds that were long lost. It isnt a riveting drama, but a quite slowburning and subtle one and for those who are interested in this genre it could be worth a watch, but dont expect fireworks!

The bad: I love to see Liam Neeson in his hardhitting old man gangster roles in which he fights and shoots bad guys. But this movie has very little of that and therefore I got a bit bored with it half way through.

NOT suited for the Liam Neeson action gangster fans. Best suited for an arthouse movie audience which likes to watch a subtle slowburning character drama...

Neeson's latest genre flick gives the actor slightly more meat to chew on, but it's also often meandering and unfocused

Set in Boston, the film follows a former boxer turned low level enforcer (Liam Neeson) working for local crime boss Charlie Connor (Ron Perlman). After he starts forgetting things, the enforcer goes to a doctor who informs him that a lifetime of taking continuous blows to the head has left him with CTE. With no treatment or medicine available and an unclear estimation of how much time he has left, the enforcer starts preparing to get his affairs in order including re-establishing contact with his estranged daughter Rosie (Frankie Shaw).

Absolution is the latest vehicle for Liam Neeson who in over the past 20 years has become synonymous with these mid budgeted thrillers and crime films that while not the blockbusters they were 20 years ago are still profitable thanks to "downstream revenues" (streaming rights, international sales, etc.). Absolution sees Neeson reteaming with director Hans Petter Moland after the two collaborated on Cold Pursuit (remade from Moland's own In Order of Disappearance) and written by writer Joe Gayton. Despite being marketed as another Neeson fronted action film, absolution is really more of a noir tinged drama with some genre elements that while more ambitious than some films he's done isn't all that successful.

As per usual Neeson is playing a very standard "seasoned tough guy" as his career has taken a route previously taken by actors such as Charles Bronson, but there is at least an attempt to give him something as he plays a character slowly losing his cognitive faculties and now taking stock of his less than admirable life. The scenes where he's struggling to remember things like his dead son or what he actually intended to do are the highlights of the film and it honestly makes me wish the movie had just ditched the well worn thriller/noir trappings and been more of a character drama as it really wants to be. During the first two thirds Absolution juggles many different plot elements like his relationship with a woman played by Yolonda Ross (who disappears after the second act), the jobs he's running for Charlie Connor, or a recurring dream sequence involving his father and a boat that just feels really out of place. Once we're in the third act it basically just gives up and becomes a standard Neeson rampage but by that point those who came expecting it may feel it's too little too late while those invested in the character drama will be disappointed that it doesn't really payoff. If you want to see a movie like this that's a character study of a degenerative brain disease with crime thriller elements, you're really better off just watching Knox Goes Away from earlier this year as it did a better job of combing the two elements (with some minor missteps) and actually felt like a more fully formed vision.

Absolution tries to add a little something extra to the well worn conveyor of Liam Neeson led genre films but it's such a rough mixture of haphazard character drama and noir cliches without doing either well enough to warrant even a minimal recommendation. If you want this kind of movie but better, just watch Knox Goes Away.

Beware: Not an action movie

Liam Neeson plays a low level gangster who tries to connect with his daughter after being diagnosed with a brain disease.

Look at like this, the reason why this has such a low rating is because most people were expecting An action movie, it's not, it's a slow burn drama and it's quite good.

The movie was no doubt marketed wrong and the wrong crowd watched it in between watching tik tok reels.

This is neesons best role in years and I loved the score.

If for instance it was produced by A24 and had Ralph Fienes in the lead this would probably be rated at 6.4 at least.

Like I say go into this with low expectations and you will have a great time.

Liam Neeson should do only films like this for his age

This movie, in the career of Liam Neeson, is nearly a cliché, a pleonasm. For his age, he has done far far worse since a decade now. He is good in this story which can remind some movies from the seventies. This scheme of an aging hitman or gangster or cop, a character who lives his last moments on this earth, this scheme is not new, it has been told hundreds of times before, but this diminishes nothing to the efficiency of this movie. Liam Neeson is poignant here, no problem. Me, I like this movie, this kind of story. Liam Neeson have made and will make more films like this one in the future. He has no more choice.... This plot and main character reminds me Craig Fairbrass in THE VILLAIN (2020).

Told with conviction and care

Liam Neeson's latest crime thriller, directed by Norwegian filmmaker Hans Petter Moland (Kjærlighetens, kjøtere, Gymnaslærer Pedersen, En ganske snill mann), is imbued with a deep melancholy and sense of humanity. There have been many films about thug life in Boston, but the story of Thug (Neeson) holds its own among the better ones. The main reason is that he is a fully fleshed-out character who is brought to life by Neeson's seasoned performance. And although his world is populated with overly familiar small-time mobsters and let-down women, Moland takes his time to tell their stories with conviction and care.

Miserable story, & another rubbish hitman fantasy.

What is the point of this film?

To depress & bore the viewer with endless tedium, misery & unbelievable gangster interactions.

The stupidly levels are off the scale with this absurd idea of the writers, a hitman with memory loss & his ill fated love affair, betrayal with his 'bosses' & revenge.

The actress playing Neeson's girlfriend does a good job with a lame script, while Neesons skill & charisma are the only things that kept me watching for the duration of the film- something I now regret finishing, or even starting.

Neesons daughter must rank as one of the most risible characters in the film, even more cliched than the smirking son of his contractor.

The action is sparse & predictable, while the rest is just irritating mush & b*tching.

Utterly miserable rubbish.

Another Forgettable Rehash of the Gruff Old Man Genre

Absolution opens with all the originality of a knock-off dollar store action figure. In this case, the action hero is Liam Neeson playing "Thug" (yes, that's the actual name), a brooding, no-nonsense tough guy whose personality is as flat as his character's one-word name. A story that could be summed up in a single, uninspired sentence rolls out before us: Boooooooring. Did the writer even try? I picture them pressing shuffle on a "Neeson as Stoic Killer" playlist and calling it a day.

It's honestly impressive how Absolution manages to take the concept of a hardened antihero on a mission and squeeze every last ounce of interest out of it. Liam Neeson, no stranger to playing grizzled men with grudges, grimaces his way through the film with all the enthusiasm of someone waiting for a root canal. It's as though the director, Hans Petter Moland, threw his hands up and said, "Just look intense, Liam, and we'll handle the rest in post." The result? An endless parade of predictable scenes, stale action sequences, and empty dialogue that drags on for what feels like hours.

At one point, I wondered if Moland wasn't secretly challenging the audience to stay awake. Every scene is something we've seen a thousand times before - and done infinitely better. The choreography is tired, the stakes are absent, and the plot feel more like obligatory pitstops than actual story developments.

But maybe that's the real "absolution" here: accepting that Hollywood seems determined to strip every ounce of nuance from its thrillers. If you enjoy boring melodramas that falsely market themselves as action movies that feel like they were written by a sleep-deprived algorithm and directed by someone who may have nodded off during production, then Absolution is calling your name. As for everyone else? We've seen this movie. We've seen it so many times we could probably recite it backwards. And trust me, you won't miss anything if you skip it.

Better than I expected!

Liam's performance is just over the top, he plays the character so well you can sense every emotion he feels.

The movie is psychological, there were some disturbing scenes with too much violence but I guess that was needed for the story to unfold.

I don't understand the low ratings, it was a nice movie and you could not guess the plot very easily.

I thought this was gonna be another Liam Neeson's action movies and I love them but this one hits different, it's mystey, crime, psychology combined.

It is slow paced so it's not for everyone, but it's a rewarding one. I'd recommend watching this movie if you have a weird and unique taste in movies.

Time For Liam to retire

This is by far as boring a movie can get, gave it 2 stars just because I do like Liam Neeson, But his last couple of years, the movies are B-grade. This movie was a pathetic bore. Neesons days of Taken are behind him, He is still by far a great actor, but he needs to find scripts better suited for his age, It's fine to grow old and take up playing an action star, but better scripts are needed, after Liam read the script for this film, I can't understand why he'd do it, With a $145 million fortune amassed, I don't think he needs the money, and looking at his IMDB films in pre-production I think hes got a few more duds to come.

Not an action flick

Most people going to see this film will be disappointed. It is a somber story how cognitive decline takes hold. And with condition like that there's no chance for a happy ending.

Acting was in my opinion good and made it realistic how it's when you can't trust your memory.

So if avarage viewer is expecting visual hollywood fluff with clear morals they will not find it from here. There's no heroes, morals or righteous characters; everything is on a gray scale rather then having good and bad.

And due to confusion setting in to the main character it's hard to see him as a good guy either. He's chosen his path and working for 'bad guys' all his life. Not much to redeem there.

Better than 5.1 stars.

I was expecting another Liam Neeson driven action flick but this is a more thoughtful movie. It is slow paced for sure but I feel unfolds nicely. You really get the sense the guy at the end regrets his choices in life. You also get the sense he was destined for that life. I think the development of Liams character over the course of the movie builds your feelings for him. This is a flawed/violent person who at the end grows more desperate to reconcile with the family he walked away from. The movie touches a lot on inter-generational abuse and neglect and the chaos and struggle that leads to generation after generation. Also, I felt the movie was exceptionally written. If you're willing to give it the time and enjoy Neesons more subtle performances you should enjoy this.

Liam Neeson is a bit repetitive in this role and brings little energy or enthusiasm.

Absolution is a new action drama directed by Hans Petter Moland, director of Cold Pursuit.

A serious criminal (Liam Neeson) starts to get older and is less able to perform his criminal tasks. When he also learns to suffer from chronic memory problems, he tries to change his life.

He hopes to be able to pick up his ties with his estranged daughter and grandson. To do this, he must keep his criminal past and current career separate, so that he does not transfer the danger of this to them. This only seems to be more difficult and dangerous than he expected.

With this new action film, Liam Neeson is repeating himself a bit, because in 2022 he played a criminal character in the American remake Memory, a remake of the Dutch film The Alzheimer Case, who also starts to suffer from memory loss. Furthermore, the film also uses elements from other Liam Neeson films such as his best-known Taken. The film also has too many separate storylines, which only make the film more messy and difficult to follow, which can make the film seem a bit long-winded.

Apart from some action moments, the film is also more about the drama moments of a criminal father, who now tries to be there for his lost family with his declining health and memory. They are not really interested in him, because he was hardly there for them in the past.

The acting is also not that special. Liam Neeson himself brings little energy or real enthusiasm with him. With this role he seems to be going for a paycheck for this year. Ron Perlman also plays more of a small cameo role as a criminal boss. The estranged daughter and grandson are also played by actors who are better known from TV roles and subsequently deliver little special with these film roles.

A lackluster tale of redemption lost in clichés

Absolution tries to weave a tale of redemption and family amidst the dangers of a crime-ridden life but stumbles with an uninspired script and a misaligned cast. Liam Neeson's portrayal of an aging gangster revisits familiar territory, adding little depth to his repertoire. The supporting actors fail to bring chemistry or emotional weight, leaving key moments flat.

The story, while centered on a promising theme of redemption, feels stale, with predictable twists and little originality in its execution. Despite its potential, the film struggles to stand out in an already crowded genre. Absolution might suffice as a casual watch for crime drama enthusiasts, but it leaves little to ponder once it ends.

Rating: 4/10 - A forgettable effort that fails to deliver on its premise.

Liam Neeson flick

Liam Neeson plays an unnamed thug working for minor Boston mob boss Charlie Conner (Ron Perlman). He's been assigned to back up the heir apparent Kyle Conner (Daniel Diemer) who is green, arrogant, and a druggie. He's suffering from memory issues which turns out to be CTE. He tries to reconnect with his kids. His daughter Daisy (Frankie Shaw) doesn't want anything to do with him and his son died without his knowledge.

This is Liam Neeson doing Liam Neeson except this character is on his last legs. That is a good spot for him as he ages and isn't quite the killing machine of his younger days. I wouldn't mind dropping the girlfriend and spend more time to generate drama with Daisy. The writing can do some sharpening but one must also remember that the man is suffering from mental degeneration. He can't be throwing out snappy one-liners. I like this for Liam Neeson although everybody else seems to be unimpressed.

Unlikable characters doing awful things

Story moves slowly, meanders most of the time, with depressing characters, grey settings, eerie soundtrack, surreal dream sequences, and a climax that's not worth the wait. There's sparse dialogue so the supporting characters are not developed in any depth, which makes the simple storyline even less engaging. As other reviewers have mentioned, this is not an action flick, it's a slow-moving morose drama. Perhaps Neeson saw this as a meaty role to showcase his range, but his character ('Thug') has virtually no redeeming qualities so I never found myself even once rooting for him. Even his daughter and grandchild are not characters I connected with. The world view of life being 'a shitstorm' espoused by the film's characters is pretty depressing. If you want to watch ineffective people live miserable lives for two hours, this is the movie for you.

A good watch

This is not your typical action-packed Liam Neeson movie, and that might be why some people dislike it or find it boring. However, for me, this was exactly why I enjoyed it. For the past few years, I've felt like all his movies were becoming repetitive-different titles but essentially the same movie. Absolution breaks away from that mold, offering a surprising level of emotional depth that sets it apart from his usual roles. The film provides a thoughtful exploration of redemption and relationships, which I found refreshing. That said, I wasn't a fan of the ending. It felt dragged out, taking too long to get to the point, which slightly detracted from the overall experience for me.

What did I just watch?

It really seems like they mixed up the reels and kept the cut footage instead. It was quite incoherent and really felt like we watched the floor trimmings. Such a shame that films like this get green lit while others that have far more potential get rejected. I like Liam Neeson and Ron Pearlman, but they both seemed to be playing these roles to pay the rent and I can't imagine that is the case. The characters all were underdeveloped and left you feeling as if the writer and director were punching some sort of annual requirement clock si keep their Hollywood memberships from expiring. I would imagine they didn't even make back their budget... but perhaps the studios need a tax write off now and again.

while

It might be 'nothing special', it CERtainly wasn't a bad movie... no. There's nothing new about the story, but...still it's a story well told.

It's always smart to have Liam Neeson on board for any movie...you know he always brings his best game no matter what sort of story it is... i think what a lot of people, besides the usual armchair wannabes who will trash ANYthing to elevate themselves, may have had trouble with is... it's a dark story...and nothing is 'over the top'...which is a lot of what i enjoyed about it...the realism...i'm just sorry that Ron Perlman didn't have a larger role.

But this movie, by no means, felt like a waste of time...

Do you hear the guitar?

Thug was an ex-boxer who turned into his namesake, sort of right hand for the mob boss. After working for 30 years, his choice of life had him estranged with his daughter and at one point, he did lose his son. He is diagnosed with CTE and with dwindling memory, he wants to make peace with his loved ones, as quickly as possible. He finds a caring partner but time is short to ensure everyone's safety and stop her daughter move from her house which is about to be sold. With his moral conundrum, he wants to go out with one last good deed and Absolution takes us through his final journey.

Thug is decent enough story on paper, offering nothing new in terms of content but with an able lead like Liam Neeson, it would have been easier to pull this one off. But the film's slow pacing doesn't back Liam Neeson's performance as Thug. The emotions felt disjointed due to the narrative, doesn't allowing to connect with his world. The relationship with daughter is half baked and much of their dialogues filled with expletives, didn't serve the purpose. The relationship he has with Yolonda's character too starts and ended abruptly. This isn't an 'action' film considering how limited those scenes were. Overall, it was a tiring watch that needed a better screenplay.

This is the art of acting. A fantastic story and played so beautifully.

Firstly, I get quite annoyed at the amount of moronic posts about this film not being "a stereotypical Liam Neeson" well clearly you have not seen the full cannon of his work!

Secondly, it's doesnt always have to be non stop action and violence to make it good but sadly the majority of the Western audience only values that.

Anyway, moving onto the film. I had no idea what to expect and was delighted to be entertained by a wonderful performance from Neeson, set against the cold backdrop of Boston and was incredibly well shot.

It builds well and has layers of complexity.

Not to be rushed. Rather like a fine wine. This is a mid week film to be watched in peace and quiet with time to watch the art unfold.

The low rating on IMDB is a sad endicment of today's audience's desires.

Disappointed

Liam Neeson has always been a favorite actor, but this movie is by far a movie that I'll never watch again! As a matter of fact, we went to an expensive theater to watch it and left halfway through! It was so boring that we were about to fall asleep! I'm giving it 3 stars, but not sure it deserved that! We're going to wait until it comes to a streaming app, watch the rest of the movie at home and then decide if it deserves more stars!

After we watch the rest of the movie, is it possible to come back here and edit or review? Wait...maybe we shouldn't, because we didn't like the first half!!!!!!

Garbage movie not worth watching

I love Liam Neeson, but this movie was garbage. Nothing about it made sense, and the acting was atrocious. Liam, what were you doing? I've seen children do better acting. I don't understand why this movie exists.

The plot was dumb, the "action" was dumb, and the ending was dumb. Did y'all need money that bad? Regarding the acting, there were multiple times where it was impossible to get into the movie because you knew it was fake.

There was nothing believable, but everything that made you ask "Uh, what is happening?" Very disappointed with this, what a waste of time. Glad I didn't pay to see this in theater.
