For the scenes inside the university hospital, the sets had to be rebuilt from scratch for this film, as the actual hospital used in the first film had been gutted.
Director Christopher Landon announced plans for a third film as soon as production wrapped, and stated that it "expands the world in a significant way" and "it's very much connected to the tag at the end of this movie." However, in July 2019, he quelled rumors on X that development was already underway, stating that with what he has planned for the threequel, it will not be happening unless Netflix is interested to invest.
Like in the first film where Carter announces the story bearing similarities to the plot of Groundhog Day, he establishes the similarities with this sequel's plot to बैक टू द फ़्यूचर: पार्ट II (1989). There are small nods to the film, like the wood chipper from "Biff's Tree Removal" and a clock tower scene.
Tree's shirt says "FML" on it, but in certain photos promoting the film, this was changed to "OMG."
Universal Pictures released the film in the United States on 13 February 2019. Critics praised Rothe's performance, as well as the film's shift to a more sci-fi tone, although some noted it as derivative of the first film. It grossed $64 million worldwide against a $9 million budget, so a third film, Happy Death Day to Us, was announced. However, on account of diminishing returns (as Happy Death Day (2017) had grossed $125 million worldwide on a $4.8 million budget), Blumhouse decided not to proceed with the second sequel. Director Christopher Landon stated that for part 3, he envisioned a big-budget apocalyptic adventure with a much larger scope: "This third movie needs a bigger budget, but since the second movie didn't perform as well as the first, it's a tall order." Unless another studio is willing to invest, the threequel will likely be shelved indefinitely.
