One day, a century from now, somebody will be checking out Netflix’s Chris Rock: Selective Outrage special. They’ll be doing it on a streaming service dedicated to serving viewers their entertainment in five- or ten-minute chunks — quick bites, as it were — because that will be the way everybody will be ingesting their entertainment in 2123. That person won’t be watching with any interest in the timeliness of the special. They won’t be watching with any hunger for what Chris Rock had to say about wokeness or Will Smith, because if we’re still talking about cancel culture and Slapgate in 2123, that will make mushroom zombies look like utopia. But anyway, they’re gonna be watching and they’re going to very, very briefly be confused by Rock doing a joke about how Slapgate started when Jada Pinkett Smith got pissed off that Will Smith didn’t get an Oscar nomination for Emancipation.

The new long-awaited Chris Rock comedy special, Selective Outrage, sets an important precedent for Netflix. The platform has built a streaming empire with groundbreaking original content and beloved, binge-worthy classics, and the streamer changed the entire TV landscape by uploading whole seasons at a time. Between true crime documentary series and stand-up specials, Netflix has become a hub for the world's most talked about and viral shows. And as of 2023, Netflix has over 230 million subscribers (via Demand Sage), making it the ultimate platform for releases in terms of potential viewership.

However, while the Netflix platform has been a game changer in the way that people consume shows and movies, it has also succumbed to TV traditions that are seemingly unchangeable. Even though uploading entire series at a time proved successful for the streamer, Netflix has reverted to splitting up releases for certain shows, which it did with The Sandman and Stranger Things.

On Saturday, Netflix is venturing into new and exciting territory: live television. “Selective Outrage,” a Chris Rock comedy special, will premiere on the streamer this weekend, and Netflix is taking a plunge by allowing fans to watch the set live.

Recorded in Baltimore, Maryland’s Hippodrome Theatre, Rock’s set will begin at 7 p.m. Pt/10 p.m. Et. on Saturday and will be live-streamed by Netflix in around 190 countries. “Selective Outrage” will appear like any other title on Netflix’s interface that you can click and watch. Because the special is live, and therefore only available in English, users need to make sure their profile settings have English as their default language in order find it on Netflix.

The live March 4 special is a big experiment for the service, which has also disclosed how the live stream function will work on the platform. The live pre-show, dubbed “The Show Before the Show,” will begin at 6:30 p.m. Pt and originate from Los Angeles’ famed Comedy Store nightclub on Sunset Boulevard.

The special will be hosted by Ronnie Chieng and feature Leslie Jones, Deon Cole and Arsenio Hall, among others, as well as appearances aond commentary from Amy Schumer, Cedric the Entertainer, Ice-t, Jerry Seinfeld, Kevin Hart, Paul McCartney, Sarah Silverman and Wanda Sykes.

Ronny Chieng with Arsenio Hall, Leslie Jones, Deon Cole and others are hosting the “The Show Before the Show” pre-show on Saturday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. Pt/ 9:30 p.m. Et. The pre-show will stream live from The World Famous Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip.

The comedians will countdown to the live Netflix comedy event “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage,” which is produced and directed by Joel Gallen. That half-hour show will include a number of Rock’s famous friends, like Amy Schumer, Cedric the Entertainer, Ice-t, Jerry Seinfeld, Sir Paul McCartney, Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes and others.

Then at 7 p.m. Pt/ 10 p.m. Et, Rock will be the first to perform a live-streaming Netflix special, a first for the streamer.

Netflix has announced the release date of Chris Rock’s upcoming comedy special and its first-ever event to stream live globally.

Selective Outrage, the comedian’s second special for the streamer following 2018’s Tamborine, will stream live March 4 at 7 p.m. Pt/10 p.m. Et. As part of the announcement, Netflix released both a poster and teaser trailer for the first-of-its-kind stand-up event for the platform.
