This film should be a lesson for little girls and boys. A family with a history of tragedy are reunited with the father. At a time when womyn were expected to be quiet, pregnant and in the kitchen, some womyn started to say no. This young lady is finding out who she truly is in beautiful rural Ireland. It is nice to see the strength of some womyn being portrayed in this way. The world I live in, most womyn are willing to knock a man who is out of line on his arse so any talk of being unrealistic is laughable. Only a very little man would have his insecurities rattled by this film.

I'm Irish. I am a woman. I grew up in Ireland and still live here. My Irishness goes back to Celtic roots. But I'm not part of the Travelling Community. So I have no idea what they would think of this film. And I would really like to know. I saw a lot of truth in the film but only as a person who sees that lifestyle from a distance. I'm curious about what Travellers think of it. I would value that perspective far more than random foreign takes from people who just don't get it.
For me, I loved this film in some respects. I've always had a draw towards nomadic, gypsy living. But I wonder if this film romanticises the Travelling lifestyle as opposed to giving a more honest, starker picture.
I thought most of the actors were very good and recognised quite a few. I love the main character and how gutsy she was. She was very well portrayed.
Some parts of the story were dealt with very well while other aspects felt a little flatter. Aesthetically a nice film. For me, the rambling style of storytelling in the screenplay is reminiscent of life on the road.
As for comments expressing LMAO about a girl wanting to be a boxer in Ireland and idolising Ali, they reflect a blinding ignorance on the part of the viewer. These people clearly never heard about Katie Taylor for one thing.
This film is going to be largely lost on misogynists and people that don't get Irish culture, the tensions that exist between what some call the 'Settled' and the Travelling Communities, and the fighting Female spirit throughout Irish history way back to mythology and pre-Christian and pre-Anglo-Saxon culture here.
For anyone who enjoys a story about a free spirit struggling to break through in an oppressive world, this is definitely worth watching.

I enjoyed this movie. It's over the top at times and too many stretched gaps in the story.
But ultimately tells a great underdog story. Hazel Doupe (Francis) is a superb actress and holds this movie together.

A girl in Ireland is inspired by Ali so much that she wants to fight boys?

The film is about a youg Irish traveller girl called Frances who is passionate about boxing . She idolizes Muhammad Ali and wants to become a boxer like him. But her father doesn't want her do boxing because he thinks a woman can't do boxing. He has other projects for his daugther. The relationship between the father and his daugther is the most important thing in the story . I found the story of the film very interesting but it was sometimes boring. I really like Frances, she is a very good actress. The film is around the relationship between the father anddd his daugther , I found their relationship very interesting .
I also really like the casting and I found the father excellent in his role. The ending of the film is for me a very good end because the father accepetd that his daugther ddid boxing. The end is the best scene off the film. And also, it would have been very cool if Frances had seen Muhammad Ali.

A beautiful portrayal of the life and hardships of the Irish Traveler/Tinkers and the life and kinship of the clan. The love is real. This touched my soul and heart. If you have no Irish in you, you will probably not feel it. Great and beautiful film. The photography and beautiful Ireland I was never able to get to in my lifetime
I liked this film particularly for its main character Frances being a character releasing a lot of emotions.
I recommend it even though it's not my type of film!

It was a touching movie because the characters have difficult relations between each other. Especially between the father and the daugther , Frances. I find that this represents the opinion and the way ok thinking of certain men. This film is a tragedy because the story begins with the life of Frances as a child and she witness the death of her mother and also because her relationship with her father throughout her adolescence becomes very complicated. It is rather boring because I can't see the point at the end of the film. The acting is powerful . The father thinks hi's daugther can't fight and says it's a man is thing, all through the movie he treats her like an inferior person, and at the end he realizes that she can and that boxing is not just for men and that it was her passion and Mohamed Ali , his idol.

In 2017, after 500-plus years, the Travellers of Ireland were finally recognized by the Republic as their own ethnic group. The films Snatch and Into the West are also about Travellers, but this masterpiece is the most realistic regarding how they lived in the 1960s. It's a bit different today, but not much (see above mentioned films, or take my word for it because I lived among Travellers in Ireland for a year). All that aside, if you've not yet been honored to see Hazel Doupe act, then this is your chance. Not only is she an exemplary artist, her natural beauty which deviates from the common female aesthetics of our own day like a persimmon differentiates itself from the common apple or orange is well worth viewing--and she is in nearly every scene. I only give a full 10 stars to superlative work, and this film is nothing less than perfect.

Float Like a Butterfly is a film directed by Carmel Winters. It was released in 2018. The story is about a gypsy girl who wants to box and be free like Muhammed Ali, and who refuses to be married and lose her liberty. Float Like a Butterfly is more or less a good film. This film is like another stone thrown at the patriarchal system of the 1970 year in Great-Britain. I think it can help some girls to do "boy" sports, and Hazel Doupe as the main character made me proud pf those girls who fight for their independence. However i dislike the discussions between the characters. They are like inhumane, they are good only in theory. The acting between Frances and her father is not very good either. The father is just here to represent the ennemy. This is a basic story, no plot twist, not very surprising at all.
This movie is 60% good, the other 40% are because Carmel WInters has been solo to write and make the film. There are many errors however i recommend it.
Sorry for the mistake, im french !

With a trip across Ireland in the gypsy community, this feature-length film shows us beautiful landscapes and the interesting Traveller culture. This film is about a teenage girl, Frances, who has idolized Muhammed Ali since she was a kid and who dreams of becoming a boxer. She did not grow with her dad because he was in prison and throughout the film, daughter and father will have to learn how to live together again.
This film also makes us think about the role that women in the gypsy community but also in our society should play. Dreaming of becoming a boxer is always easier when you are a boy and Frances will have to deal with that.
About the film making, I felt like the plot sometimes seemed a little unrealistic but it was nice to watch though.
We need to congratulate the composer, who did a really good job, he managed to give a gypsy touch to his music! We also need to congratulate young Hazel Doupe, who acted Frances and who is a rising star of the Irish cinema. She really held this film together.
Even if I do not think that it was the "film of the year", I would highly recommend it, as a nice little film to watch, maybe not with children but with teenagers. I found this film refreshing and heart-warming and if you are interested in the gypsy culture but also feminism, you will definitely love it.
Also, if you are a fan of Muhammed Ali, you will love the allusion of his famous quote in the tittle.
I mark this film seven out of ten. 👌

This Film directed by Camel Winters is a very beautiful Irish film. First I think if you are interested in Irish society, it is a perfect film for you. The fact that the film is Irish makes it original because there are not many famous films from this country, but this one won the FIPRESCI Discovery Prize and when we see the film we understand why. The film Stars Hazel Doupe, she is a great, young and pretty girl, she has talent and that has to be reconised. The film is about an original and historical subject. Frances is a girl from a traveller group in Ireland. She wants to protect and fight for her peaple, like her idol, Muhamed Ali. But her father is like a barrier in her goals because he wants to break her dreams. Frances is not the girl her father thinks she should be, but she is a heroine, and fights for her rights and her freedom. In this film we follow a strong girl, who has something to claim and to say. That is maybe the simple reason why I like it. Or maybe it is more than that.... ok this film is not the best one, but what is a very good film ? Here Frances makes sense to me because I can identify to her and that is the power of films, when fiction becomes reality.
A magical and incredible film of hope !!
Do not miss it !
