(Because this is my first review I literally went and binge watched a bunch of anime reviewers to try and sound professional. My life is so sad it's not even funny.)
Sooooo... Made In Abyss. I goddamn LOVE this show. I want to make something clear right now - this is not a show for everyone. It's rated R17 for a reason, because there are some legitimately disturbing and downright gory scenes. But it's not a mindless, just-there- to-be-edgy gore, it's the kind of gore that is used to build on the atmosphere and illustrate the shows themes in a clearer light. So if you can stomach it, then this show is definitely worth a watch.
Story - 9/10 The basic premise of this show is that there is a huge pit called the Abyss, full of dangerous monsters and ancient relics. No one knows what is at the bottom, but adventurers called cave raiders go down into the abyss with hopes of finding out the secrets and origin of this mysterious structure. Our main character, Riko, is a small girl who's mother used to be a White Whistle, the highest rank of cave raider you can be. One day Riko is out cave raiding on the upper layers when she meets a amnesiac robot called Reg. After receiving a letter from her mother telling her to come to the bottom of the Abyss, she and Reg go on an adventure to try and find out the truth. While it's at first seems reasonably cliché, the story becomes more and more intricate as it goes on and gets very dark and mature. Despite all this dark tension, there is a certain sense of wonder and hope throughout the whole show that stops it from becoming a Tokyo Ghoul-esque pit of depression. (Nothing against TG but you gotta admit they lay it on a bit thick.)
Characters - 8/10 Since the show is only 13 episodes and has an incomplete ending, there hasn't been crazy amounts of character development yet. The characters all have unique personalities and are beginning to mature, but they're really only starting their "character arcs." But the reason I'm rating this category so high is because of how well the characters play off each other. Riko is the confident, obsessive, albeit sometimes cocky adventurer (although the cockiness is never overdone to the point of annoyance). Reg, while being quite powerful, is extremely nervous and has a tendency to follow everyone else's plans, which leads to some great moments when he's stuck on his own. Then we have Nanachi, a character we meet around episode 10, who is the more sceptical and knowledgeable one. These three different personalities bounce off each other and use each other to improve or change themselves.
Sound - 9.5/10 The soundtrack is perfect for this show. All the different OSTs serve as excellent accompaniments to whatever scene they're allocated, and lots of the music has a sense of wonder and mystery which is this shows strongpoint. However, while there are some stand out tracks, a lot of the OSTs don't really stand out on their own, and really only work in the context of the show. But since were only reviewing said show, I'm still going to give it a 9.5.
Art - 10/10 So, the character designs for some of the younger characters is a bit subjective. Some people like it and others wish it was more mature, to reflect on the show. I personally think it adds to the misleading nature but that's just me. Not counting those, all of the older characters look absolutely awesome, and the art for the environments and backgrounds... There are no words to describe it. It is honestly spectacular. The visuals for the fight scenes are also well animated, and there's never a point where it feels the quality has gone down. Which is impressive considering the relatively low budget the creators had to work with.
Overall - 9/10 As you probably got by how I was gushing over it like a fangirl, but I really like this show. On terms of pure enjoyment this was probably a 10 but I had to factor in the actual writing of the show as well. As I mentioned before, the story is incomplete, and the manga is currently on hiatus until 2018 so it might be a little while for season 2. (The anime covered 26 chapters and the manga only has 42). Also, the show could do without some of the sexual references, but too be fair they're few and far between, with the worst of it being in episode 2. The show is also held back by the lack of character development so far but this was still a crap ton of in to watch. There is still a few months of the year left but this is definitely the best show so far - not including sequels *cough* HeroAca S2 *cough. If your OK with seeing the odd scene of a small innocent child in immeasurable pain then your good to go.

You can tell there was a ton of effort put into this series. As someone who doesn't like the current trends in anime these days, I found massive enjoyment watching Made in Abyss. This might not make sense, but it feels really pure and new. I highly recommend just diving straight into this series without knowing much about it.
Made in Abyss looks childish. If you think it is for kids. You are Grosly mistaken! Stop that train of thought before it's too late.
Basic plot: it's about a girl and a robot boy who decide to travel down "the abyss" a giant hole for spoiler reasons.
I can calmly say there were Scenes, ney episodes that left me speechless and utterly dumbstruck.
The show is beautifully animated. And to top it all off the plot is completely original and very well fleshed out. You'll enjoy the unique traits of each character and the diverse pacing of the story.
If you are a fan of sci fi adventure, studio ghibli, or are just looking to get your sick kicks. Made in Abyss is for you.

I am a 30 year old stoner dude, who usually watches action movies and so forth, but this was truly addictive, and gripped me from start. I don't usually comment like this, but this show deserves it. The story is a rollercoaster of emotions. And the music, OMG, what an amazing job they did on producing one of the most beautiful soundtracks I've heard on a show, just awed at how the music matches the atmosphere in every scene.
WOW!
I highly recommend this gem!

Made in Abyss is going down as one of my favorite shows of all time. Not just one of my favorite animes, one of my favorite shows. The characters, world-building, plot progression, music, art style, animation, voice acting (sub and dub), everything is incredible.
The show is a return to fantasy elements, and doesn't set up an rpg style world or borrow from Tolkien or C.S. Lewis. It begins in an optimistic and lighthearted tone with just enough dark implications to get you wondering, but as it goes on it begins to explore the most brutal aspects of being human in an increasingly harsh manor. But it never gets to be too much, and it doesn't feel like gratuitous suffering because the two lead characters push through with hope, determination, and a childish charm.
I really hope Made in Abyss gets another season. I'm dying to know what happens after the latest episode, and I would read ahead in the manga if the author weren't such a creep. If you're prepared for a shockingly dark and intense show with incredible quality and enough high moments to get you through the low ones, then give it a watch. You won't regret it.

An absolutely fantastic anime with solid world-building, likable characters, and a gorgeous art style. The first episode immediately pulls you into the show and introduces you to the cast of characters and the beautiful world, and from there on it hooks the viewer with its fantastic lore and world-building, something which many shows are unable to do effectively. I'm telling you, go watch this anime right now; it's a unique gem that you absolutely will not regret watching.
PROS: + Absolutely fantastic art style and music + Great lore building + Characters are all likable and have interesting backstories + Manages to be both cute and serious
CONS: - Some minor pacing issues in the beginning but nothing serious

Throw in some Etrian Odyssey and you get a rough idea of what Made in Abyss might be.
But those may be a bit obscure as references so what does all that mean? This isn't a Studio Ghibli work, but it has a real organic, curvilinear art style that could be described as a child like look that really fits the characters who are all very young. If you know Ghibli art, you know how detail oriented it is, and how it's style really lends itself to fantasy based environments.
There isn't a more mature environment that the one presented in Dark Souls - it's all about brutal enemies in dark surroundings with no mercy given to those who participate. And this is where Made in Abyss really separates itself from the look, and truly becomes a mature story of life, love and survival. There is a quest, and one of the main characters is especially well suited to travel and survive in the brutal realm revealed as this anime unfolds.
Lastly would be Etrian Odyssey, which is another video game where you build a team and descend into a subterranean realm, each level down more challenging (and mysterious) than the level above. This is exactly like the realm in Made in Abyss - though in typical (manga) anime fashion, the abyss is far more complex than that presented in Etrian Odyssey. It has a life blood of its own, effects those in its grasp, and even can make literal changes in the characters to descend too far, or spent too much time in the harsh/unpredictable realm.
The two main characters are interesting and become more interesting as the story progresses. One character is augmented, has very obvious mysterious qualities, but the other main character may have a more bizarre background still! And added to this she appears completely normal.
But nothing is ordinary here. It's like some far distant lost civilization that lives on the edge of a great trove of artifacts. The explores descend the abyss for relics, but also out of wonder lust, and desire to understand and exploit its power.
I love this anime. The environment is complicated, but revealed in ways that serves the story and characters. The characters aren't just likable - their lovable, and to see them suffer hurts in ways that is difficult to explain. It is worth noting that this season has a lot of build up, complete with excellent foreshadowing. The season really picks up in the last 5 episodes, the last one being double length. I completely approve of the design. The build up establishes so many important story element and characters, all needed to really give the final third of the season such emotional intensity.
Even incomplete (the Manga is still being written... but there is enough content for 12 more episodes!) Made in Abyss is astonishing. It taps into so many things I love: exploration, science fantasy, a quest, a mysterious and dangerous environment with beautiful characters who support each other.

Still we're well into 2018 and no anime came close to Made in Abyss.
Emotional, brutal and beautiful. Don't believe the 1/10 reviews out there, it's being praised everywhere for a reason.

Rarely has a show annoyed me so much like "Made in Abyss".
The anime is actually extremely well done in many ways. The presentation is really very good and made me very interested in how the story will unfold and how the characters will develop.
To stay with the characters - they were often really well written and the relationships between the characters also developed in a meaningful way.
The look of the anime and its animations are also extremely lovingly designed, so that you enjoy watching it.
The anime really could have told an extremely interesting story about children entering a world unknown to them, unaware of the dangers of it...
Apparently the author thought there was one thing missing - the sexualization of children... In the first season you got some very questionable scenes - sexual violence on children, very scantily clad children, children getting to know each other's bodies.
Normally I would have stopped the anime a long time ago, but here I looked past it and said to myself that everything makes sense because I was really interested in the story.
But in the middle of the 2nd season I finally stopped the anime - here really no option was left out, if it was possible to portray the characters in light clothing or to sexualize them in some other way.
Without all that weird stuff, the anime could easily have gotten an 8/10 or 9/10 from me, but because of all that slightly pedophilic tinge, I can't give it more than a 6/10, unfortunately, even though the rest was really good.

Made in Abyss is an anime that is severely underrated. This show can invoke so many different emotions out of you as it balances so many tones flawlessly. The characters drive the heart of this show and make us worried when they are put into dangerous situations. The danger is amplified by this beautiful world that never shies away from showing off it's true nature. The world never seems evil, it seems wild and untamed, balancing on a scale between chaos and beauty. The concept of the world itself is also executed better than I could have hoped for, constantly showing us functions to this incredibly interesting world that make sense. The Music in this show is also great and captures the beauty or horror of each and every moment our characters are put in. Made in Abyss is one of my favorite anime and deserves so much more praise.

I really dig the settings and how it feels interesting exploration-wise while being quite punishing. It's still fantasy but it feels somewhat grounded and realistic... At least for the first season.
The characters are quite bland, not bad just generic. White whistles are a lot more interesting though.
The plot has quite good suspense potential throughout the first 13 eps.
I thought the mild horror scenes were somewhat satisfying in a sense that it counter balanced the very childish vibes around the characters. That said, the infamous sexualized scenes indeed felt off, right of the bat, though it never crosses the line. Still sus tho.
I saw quite a lot of Hunter x Hunter, Studio Ghibli (strong Princess Mononoke inspirations) and vibes from Naoki Urasawa's work (Monster and Pluto especially...). Some user mentionned Dark Souls but apart from that Ozen elevator I didn't see it.
Now regarding season two, the general vibe is that it feels too chaotic and repetitive. Lots of repetitions surrounding the MCs's side plots, deaths that felt unecessary, quite a lot of plot holes and mainly the end of the exploration aspect. It basically felt like your regular anime filler season except it's likely not the case.
At the end of the day I feel like they should have done something like one full season per layer of the pit, focusing more on the particular properties and the beasts/raiders of each layers. Again, the world building of this show is easy S-tier potential. I'd class this show amongst those that seemingly don't have any targeted audience, it's its own thing.

There are few bad reviews on this one, I thought I should make a critical review for people who might not like it. This first installment of the Made in Abyss franchise is good, maybe somewhere between 5 and 6 stars. The animation is gorgeous, in terms of living an adventure it does a pretty good job and the first episodes are quite good in drawing you into their world.
So why am I giving this 4 stars? It starts off wonderfully well, the plot is intriguing and the descent into the "abyss" of our souls seems promising. Already in the first episode we learn how kids are exploited, how rough and savage life can be. However, the series journey through the layers of the abyss is very underwhelming the closer it gets to the bottom. In the last season, Golden City of the Scorching Sun, it gets bonkers instead of touching, the whole promise of the series of delivering a major punch gets postponed indefinitely. You can see the story lost itself the closer it got to reaching the end and delivering its final message, they're stalling and just pushing flashy action scenes with forced, contrived emotivity.
In summary, the promise to get to the bottom of the abyss is broken, it seems the writers have no idea either of what should be there.
Another very annoying thing is the sexualization of children. It's off-putting, I wish they could stop doing this in animes overall, it just takes away value for the larger audience.

The story in the dubbed first movie is a surprising combination of what should be conflicting light and airy tones with a dark and bleak story and quest but to my surprise they came together masterfully.
The artwork, music, characters and story flow exceptionally well and before you realize it the first in the series of movies is done leaving you fulfilled but wanting the next chapter in the story.
There are gaps, characters that seem to deserve more depth and unresolved issues, but considering there are multiple movies in the series yet to be dubbed I'll have to hope all of those small things holes get filled by the end of arc.

Without spoiling anything I will just say that this is one of those GEMs that you run into whilst relentlessly looking for that New anime story to binge. I had just got done bingeing SAO Alicization and I really needed another anime that could hold up. Made in the Abyss has everything I look for in an anime. Beautiful Artwork, a Quest, interesting characters, breath taking scenery, just enough comedy to not be over the top, and something original about the story itself to separate it from other animes. The look of the show could be likened to having sceneries like studio ghibli, with the character designs resembling Aniplex Projects like SAO and FMA. Im 4 episodes deep and if all keeps moving at the pace it has been, then I will hold this title with other cherished Animes of mine like Dragon Ball, FMA, SAO, Inuyasha, and countless other Animes I love to watch. So if you are looking for that visually astounding unique adventure story I think this is it.

When I watched this anime for the first time, I knew that the author, Akihito Tsukushi, had put a lot of thought and love into the story and its development. I have watched a lot of adventure anime, and I have to admit the fact that this is the best one made in the past few years. I would even go on to say that it can be grouped within the mentions One Piece, Dragon Ball (referring to Part 1 of DB series) or Hunter x Hunter in terms of Story quality.
The characters in the initial episodes provide thoughts of a light-hearted anime by it can be assured that the story is much more dark and deep. It falls into the genre of Dark Fantasy and excels at it just as in the Adventure genre.
Kinema Citrus deserves the credit of this show for making it into a masterpiece from Tsukuchi manga, and I can assure you that justice was done with this show. And that's all. The music is one of the main factors displaying the emotion in this anime, and it's one of the best soundtracks I have experienced in the whole of anime. Kevin Penkin is one of the rare non-Japanese music directors to have been involved in an anime. And it paid off pretty well for Made in Abyss.
Review points: Story - 9.5/10. I have mentioned the story quality above. It won't justice if I try to mention things here. Watch the anime, you'll understand what I mean.
Characters - 9/10. Unique characters, not belonging to usual tropes in present-day or previously made anime.
Animation - 10/10. Just glancing into the show's scenery and landscape gives you a mystic vibe. Really beautiful animation.
Direction - 9/10. The anime isn't completed as of this review but till the end of the 13 episodes, I can say that the Director did his job well. Looking eagerly forward to this show and story.
Music - 10/10. Breathtaking. Beautiful and exotic soundtracks. Reminds nostalgic feelings of old games like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Paper Mario and Final Fantasy 5 (SNES). Hands down, a Masterpiece!
Conclusion - 9.5/10. A great story that's been told and yet to be spoken through the manga and the anime. The sad thing about this show is that many people are not aware of it. It's a masterpiece that deserves the attention of any other popular anime and hope that people gets to know of this show.
Hoping Masayuki Kojima, Kevin Penkin and the Kinema Citrus crew, decide to take up the further seasons of Made of Abyss, and if so, hoping them to perform an awesome job like the first season.

Authors certainly like to keep viewers in the dark. Practically everything is described so vaguely, that somewhere along the way one begins to wonder if there really is a coherent picture behind it all..
For example, what's the state of the world? They sure have electricity disseminated enough for small children at the orphanage to have access to it, so society must be fairly industrialized. Also year 1900 is mentioned, what might be an indicator of the current historical period.
That said, If the relics are valuable why isn't any country trying to secure the pit for itself? Except for few mentions of foreign cave raiders' squads(which appear more like a bunch of independent venturers than official expeditions), nothing is disclosed about the outside world.
Which brings us to the island, that we also get to know nothing about. Except that it's relatively remote: about 50-day sail on a small wooden ship.
Next goest the city of Orth. Not much is revealed about it either. How is it governed? Rough idea about the population? What is its food source? From where all the goods come from? What is the role of relics and consequently the cave raiders in its economy? What other districts are there except for slums(how is it structured)?
Next goes the pit. Is anyone allowed to enter it? Are there some entry points or one can descend from anywhere? Why there is barely any infrastructure built in it? If the curse is weaker on outskirts why not ascend there? What's the deal with the crossing points to another layers? Why not just dig down?
And the cave raiders: how are they organized except from ranks? Do they have some bestowed goal, or just venture willingly as independent groups? Why so many of them are unaware of dangers already discovered and described by their predecessors? Why their deaths are so trivial? How many are there? Why there are barely any infrastructure? Seriously there're no shelters, no stashes, no cableways, no even markings to help with orientation, finding food/water/communication spots, or avoiding danger.
Relics up to this point are nothing more than random magic. We know neither how any of them work, nor how many there are, nor how valuable they are, nor where they came from.
The same situation is with the pit's creatures and environments.
Such lack of contextual knowledge makes it impossible to properly evaluate multitude of situations.
Nonetheless now we can proceed to the general perception of the characters. I will start by listing what's done well:
Having outlined that, it's time to get to the biggest flaw of the story: Riko's actions regularly resemble that of a person without a self-preservation instinct. And the worst part is that she does not improve along the way.
If you think it's an exaggeration, there is a scene where floor collapses beneath her feet(what if not for helping hand would've resulted in certain death). After being pulled up from the verge, she doesn't stop even for a second to reflect on the situation; and literally the first thing she does is run carelessly on that same surface without any particular reason. That event isn't regarded even by a single thought. It's so trivial, almost as if it didn't happen at all.
Beside that heroine regularly acts as if she were on the same grounds as her companion, despite being an ordinary human, and thus repeatedly either has to be saved, or barely avoids trouble due to the main character's luck charm.
The next flaw is an inexplicable attitude towards cave raiders' deaths as if they are being caused by an act of God, and nothing can be done about it.
Then, the show creates a rather peculiar impression of an exploration. As if the ability to advance farther with each expedition isn't due to the efforts of the previous ones during which surroundings were gradually mapped, information gathered and the environments adopted, allowing for easier and safer reach to already discovered areas and eventually enabling move beyond them, but rather by plainly enhancing oneselves to the point where ones can make it all the way and back in a single try(and if so happen to die - so be it).
Besides these, there is a multitude of individual shortfalls when characters' actions are.. questionable to put it lightly, but due to lack of clear understanding of the world it usually can't be said with certainty.
I would've liked to provide some examples, but IMDB does not allow for spoiler flags to collapse specified text parts, so skip to the summary it is.
Visual and audiable aspects are both decent. As for story it has intriguing premise, interesting characters and is complemented by brutal honesty. In conjunction it makes for an enormous potential, but unfortunately there alrerady are some poor scenario moves which indicate a rather low probability of authors being able to collect all the pieces into a coherent picture.
I'm nonetheless waiting for the continuation, though my expectations are rather low. Certainly hope to be proven wrong.

Nonetheless now we can proceed to the general perception of the characters. I will start by listing what's done well:
- Reg's and Nanachi's objectives and actions are rather understandable,
- most orphanage characters are relatable, moreover Jiruo is quite likable,
- images of Riko's mother and relatives are charismatic,
- Ozen's figure is intriguing.

This is a marvelous show. I cannot wait for season two. The character development is wonderful, and the storyline is remarkably sophisticated and keeps popping up with new twists that don't feel artificial or done just to surprise you. My wife and I both cried at the end of episode 12 and through much of episode 13. The best thing is really the writing - never a false step, full of mysteries and wonders and hazards, beautifully paced, and so much better than what you find in nearly any other series around today. Watch it, and take your time!

How the hell is this not rated 17 and up?! There's mentioning and brief showing of naked kid being tied up as torture (bondage style), there's sexual themes like lines about penis and anus, there's blood and gore, there's death. There's a lot of mature themes.
Don't be fooled by the beautiful design and art style. I LOVE the way the show looks. It's fun, refreshing, catchy, and just overall a good experience. It makes me want to see the rest of the show just to see how everything is done.
The world is also pretty cool. The concept of a giant hole with varying levels of treasure, monsters, and environment is pretty cool. It's like a huge dungeon in video games. Unfortunately we don't really get to see too much of it.
The story is also a bit weak. The village has horrible security and really no guards. The pit has tons of dangerous monsters that can kill you but kids can easily just come and go. Also this one character was quickly assimilated into the town it was a bit weird.
Overall a really slow s1 but it has just enough for me to want to see what else is coming up. Who and what is down deeper in the abyss?!

The story of the show: 10/10
World building: 10/10
Art: 8/10
Music: 9/10
Overall feel: 9/10
So why did I rate the show 1/10? Because there's one thing about the show that's impossible to overlook. They sexualize 12 year Olds literally every chance they get. One or more of the children gets naked almost every episode. They have multiple discussions about a 12 year Olds penis or how a good punishment for children is hogtying them naked. Sexual harassment is normalized in the show. I love the overall story and want so badly to answer the questions I have but I feel gross supporting the creators. Anyone who takes the time to draw full on scenes of nude 12 year Olds needs therapy.

This show gives so much life to fantasy than never before. The world-building, visuals, and even the soundtrack is absolutely insane. Not to mention, the plot, specifically the last four episodes, is some of the best episodes of anime I have ever seen. Also, Nanachi cracks me up!
