Ben Chuah’s Nite X has won the inaugural short film screenwriting competition conducted by Lee Matthews’ Different Films.

The screenplay centres on a casual hook-up between a young and older man in the middle of the night, a window into inter-generational queer relationships and the attraction and dynamics between sexual partners from different worlds.

Chuah will develop the project with Different Films, produced by Daniel Chua, directed by Matthews and released via Different Films’ YouTube channel in 2020.

The company is now looking for experienced crew members who are eager to achieve credits as heads of department on Nite X.

A fan of The Family Law and dramas Lost and The Cry, 33-year-old Chuah has completed an Advanced Diploma of Professional Screenwriting at Rmit.

Matthews initiated the Screenwriter of Distinction Competition to unearth a new voice from Australia’s diverse writing talent pool.

It’s the semifinal on “Dancing with the Stars,” and for the first time in five weeks, there will be someone other than Sean Spicer at the bottom of the leaderboard.

Which unlucky soul will it be? The final five are all pretty great dancers, and all of them have topped the leaderboard at some point this season, so expect some tight scores on Monday.

There will be two rounds: one redemption dance and one unlearned dance.

Cluj, Romania–New projects from around the Black Sea and beyond will take part this week in the Transilvania Pitch Stop, a workshop and co-production forum that’s one of the industry highlights of the Transilvania Intl. Film Festival.

Launched in 2014 as a five-day workshop for first- and second-time directors from Romania and Moldova, the Pitch Stop expanded in 2017 to include a co-production platform with projects from countries across the region.

The pitching forum has quickly become one of the leading confabs for producers and directors in Eastern Europe and the Balkans, who have traditionally looked to Western Europe for co-production and distribution opportunities. International players are also zeroing in on the Tps to identify upcoming projects and emerging talents. “For them, it’s a good place to come and discover [the region],” said Tiff industry manager Dorina Oarga.

Akash Vukoti has charmed the judges on “Dancing with the Stars: Juniors,” and he has charmed the studio audience too, as evidenced by his advancement through the competition despite lower scores. But as the competition has heated up he has needed more and more help from the studio audience votes because his judges’ scores haven’t been improving. On Juniors Choice Night he finished way down at the bottom of the leaderboard after his Charleston, but he survived again. Was he helped by the inspiring speech he gave after the judges’ comments? With one week until the “Dancing with the Stars” semifinals, the remaining eight couples performed one unlearned dance style and one team routine for Country Night before facing the first double elimination of the season. With the competition so tight, this season has proved that the judges’ scores can only take you so far.

Evanna Lynch was the belle of the ballroom, earning a combined 59 out of 60 points for her two dances, making her the top scorer of the night. Alexis Ren, Juan Pablo Di Pace, and Milo Manheim also performed perfect or near-perfect routines, cementing themselves as the best dancers left in the competition along with Evanna.

Meanwhile, the bottom scores of the season, Bobby Bones and Joe Amabile, continued to prove the naysayers wrong as they once again escaped elimination. Instead, it was lights out for John Schneider and DeMarcus Ware as they became the first male celebs to get the boot.

It’s lucky for the adult celebs this season on “Dancing with the Stars” that the kids got their own show because “Dancing with the Stars: Juniors” front-runner Miles Brown gave a performance on Disney Night that probably would have wiped the floor with most contestants double, triple or quadruple his age. Brown and his pro partner Rylee Arnold performed to the song “One Jump Ahead” from the 1992 musical classic, and their routine had the complexity of a full-blown production number. It had props, background dancers, and even some fight choreography mixed in with the Charleston moves. It was one of the fastest paced dance styles performed on Disney Night and featured some of the most intricate choreography.

Charleston, South Carolina native Paige Goldberg Tolmach is a local girl made good. She co-founded a successful eco products business in La and recently earned an Emmy nomination for her directorial debut, the documentary What Haunts Us.

Those accomplishments might seem enough for Charleston to take pride in Paige, but to hear Tolmach tell it, the city has decidedly mixed feelings about her.

“Still, in my hometown, right now, they’re really angry at me,” Tolmach tells Deadline. That anger stems from the very film she made, the one that earned recognition in the prestigious Emmy category of Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking.

Tolmach’s film probes a serial molestation scandal that took place at Charleston’s distinguished Porter-Gaud prep school, a subject she says some would prefer go unmentioned.

“People told me, ‘How dare you talk about this?’” she recounts. “‘We worked so hard to sweep it under the rug.

For a movement that announced itself with a proverbial flatline, with Cristi Puiu’s dry, sardonic, darkly comic “The Death of Mr. Lazarescu” (2005), the Romanian New Wave seems poised for a dramatic rebirth.

More than a decade after Puiu took home the Un Certain Regard Award, and Cristian Mungiu won the Palme d’Or in 2007 for his harrowing abortion drama, “4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days,” Romanian cinema is on the brink of a “new New Wave,” says Transilvania Intl. Film Festival artistic director Mihai Chirilov.

As the fest unspools its essential Romanian Days program, beginning on May 30, audiences are witnessing “first-time filmmakers that… are completely different than the aesthetic of the New Wave,” says Chirilov. Breaking from the muted palettes, flat compositions, and slow-burn realism of their predecessors, they’re bringing “a more than welcome freshness to what Romanian cinema is, and the idea of how Romanian cinema is perceived abroad.

Like the old-fashioned dance from which it takes its name – in which “one of the rules,” as director Andrei Cretulescu slyly notes, “is that you have to switch partners” – “Charleston” pulls off its own brisk two-step as it dances between genres.

“Some people called it a road movie. Some people called it a black comedy,” says Cretulescu. “But it is a film about love. That’s what I wanted to make from the very beginning, and hopefully, that’s what I made.”

It would be misleading, however, to call “Charleston” a love story; though it pays tribute to some of the genre’s conventions, the object of desire in this off-beat love triangle is killed off just minutes into the film—a swift narrative feint that allows Cretulescu to explore love through its absence.
