Finland has a historical minority of people with Swedish as mother tongue, and the Swedish dub of this series and its predecessor was made in Finland. The variety of Swedish spoken in Finland is thus often jokingly called "Moomin Swedish" by Swedes, because the dialects heard in Moomin would rarely be heard in other contexts by people living in Sweden.

With a budget of 20 million euros for the first season, the series was Finland's most expensive TV at the time of release.

The series uses a combination of hand-drawn and computer animation.
