Whitney Houston initially had no intention of contributing to the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, wanting to focus solely on her acting role. However, she was approached by Forest Whitaker who insisted she be involved, arguing it made no sense for her to star in the movie and not participate in its music. Despite her reluctance, she eventually agreed to listen to songs proposed by Babyface, who was producing the soundtrack. Later, while on vacation in Laguna Beach, she received a package from Babyface containing the song Shoop Shoop. Initially, Whitney was unimpressed with the demo, thinking Babyface was experiencing writer's block. She called him to express her concerns, but he urged her to trust him and sing the song. Once in the studio, the recording process for Shoop Shoop took about five hours, with Whitney adding her signature harmonies and subtle vocal embellishments. She described the experience as fun.
