In the principal cast, Joshua Sealy, Luke Watts and Matthew Archibald are each profoundly deaf and sign fluently. Matthew's depicted cerebral palsy is also authentic.
On the production crew, camera assistant Daniel Henderson is profoundly deaf and wears a cochlear implant. 1st Assistant Director, Ron Healey wears hearing-aids due to age.
Finally, Nicole Petley and Jennifer Maclaughlan were both certified Auslan interpreters at the time of filming.

The scene between Courtney and Myles on the couch, as they plan for their future, was completely ad-libbed, aside from direction to hit two key story beats (that Derek's deafness is hereditary and Courtney is conflicted about his special needs). The screenplay had the words "in Auslan" in parentheses under the character's name before their dialogue, every time they were instructed to sign. There was so much sign language used in the film and so many of these parentheses that they added the equivalent of fourteen pages to the screenplay.
