The show is based on a series of graphic novels by cartoonist Luke Pearson.

In October 2018, the show was renewed for a second season, which is scheduled to be released in 2020.

The first two episodes of the series premiered ahead of the show's Netflix release at the 2018 New York International Children's Film Festival.

Creator Luke Pearson also worked as a writer on the Cartoon Network series Adventure Time.

Aside from Hilda, her mother and Twig, David is the character with more appearances in Season One, as he is featured in 11 episodes out of 13 (not counting his picture on the wall in Chapter 11). Following him are Frida (10 episodes out of 13, again not counting her picture), Alfur (9 out of 13) and the Great Raven (6 out of 13, although three of those are silent cameos).
