Cut: Exposing FGM Worldwide

I can't even be distracted for a moment when watching this documentary. I can't remember if I've ever heard of such a tragedy from any piece of news, but I'm sure I never realized how pervasive FGM is until I watched the film. It's an extreme tragedy to be born as woman in such a tradition, but it seems that living in a culture that treats women inhumanely has desensitized most women of that culture. We can find that a fixed and programmed culture has great control and restraint over the values, beliefs and behaviors of the people living in it, and it is extremely difficult to break out of such a cultural framework.

In addition, I also admire the prescient and revelatory nature of this documentary. If there is no resistance, tradition will always be orthodox, no matter it is righteous or evil, progressive or decaying. It is not easy to walk among different groups and communicate with people from different languages, cultures and beliefs. Therefore, I regard this documentary as a ray of light for the emancipation of women suffering from the torture of female circumcision. I hope this documentary can be known by more people, so as to play a larger role.

Before watching this documentary, I had no idea about FGM. When I saw how FGM was going, I was shocked. I did not expect FGM to be so wide across the world, nor did I expect that there would be women who would support this FGM practice to continue to be implemented on their daughters. After watching this film, I think that more people should be made aware of the existence of FGM, and more women should be made aware of their bodies and their control over their bodies. The existence of FGM illustrates the long-term oppression and silence of women in the patriarchal society. This kind of wrong information and practice was actually acquiesced by a woman's father, husband, and son, and was regarded as an honor. Masculinism has manifested its various ways of presentation in different cultures. In ancient China, foot binding was also practice similar to FGM. Girls have wrapped their feet in cloth since they were young because ancient men believed that women's feet should be small, which is a deformed beauty. Just like FGM, foot binding is an oppression of women's body and power. This film is really great, it deserves to be known by more people, and it will benefit more people.

From my perspective, FGM, the theme of this documentary is very meaningful and educational, which is easy to be ignored. The creators found this bad and cruel custom, which was formed by backward values, and hopes to show that FGM has spread around the world through immigration through this documentary, to alert people to pay attention to this bad and cruel custom, to appeal to eliminate this bad and cruel custom and to protect more girls from harm. FGM Not only hurt the girl's physical health but also hurt the girl's mental health. According to the ice-berg cultural model, value is the implicit culture that leads to the FGM, which is a bad and cruel custom; FGM custom is one of the social behaviors that is explicit culture. Values affect and restrict people's ideas and behavior norms.

This documentary is shocking to me. I guess I am like many people who had only vaguely heard to FGM, and I think I had assumed it only happened in a small number of very remote areas and very primitive people and only to a small number of women and girls. For some reason, I assumed that this horrible, barbaric practice could not still be happening in the modern world. But obviously, the procedure is still very widespread. Even after watching this documentary, I am still in shock, and I simply can't believe that such a large number of people, men, and women, know about this and allowed it to happen. The misinformation and superstition that is used to justify this practice are difficult to understand. That governments don't prohibit this practice is hard to believe. There is no rule of law or, more importantly, enforcement of the rule of law to protect women and girls. I am saddened to live in a world where fathers and brothers allow this to happen to their wives, sisters, and daughters. Human ignorance and cruelty seem to have no limits

There is no doubt that this documentary is great. Personally, FGM is a topic I don't want to know more about, because it is really cruel and against humanitarianism. But if everyone avoids talking about FGM, the number of people suffering from circumcision will not decrease, so I think this documentary is very meaningful. This documentary records the thoughts of people in various regions with FGM related experience, which is effective for propaganda against circumcision. I think director John Chua, as a man, is brave and terrific in directing this documentary in depth. In fact, even though some people in areas where circumcision is prevalent are aware of the wrong nature of this behavior, many women still suffer from FGM in order to adapt to the local culture and not to be excluded by people in their society. It is necessary to prohibit FGM, but it is still difficult to completely save all women who have suffered FGM. This documentary is very meaningful as a pioneer work against FGM.
