This Ain't No 50 Shades of Gray

True story of Colleen Stan, age 20 who convinces her parents she'll be okay hitchhiking from Eugene, Oregon to northern California to surprise a friend on their 21st birthday. She hitches a ride with Cameron and Janice Hooker, only to be kidnapped by them and spends the next seven years of her life as their sex slave. As Janice tells her, "You're only here to take the pain."

This is a film reminds all of us, people are rarely what they seem and how the human mind, body, and spirit can survive in horrific conditions. The film contains violence (bondage) and very adult situations, but a must see if you or anyone you know still think hitching a ride is just as safe as any other type of transportation.

Unfortunately is based on a true story.

A shocking movie that shows the true store of a girl who was hitchhiking and was kidnapped by an unsuspected couple by several years. The girl was living in a box most of the time, humiliated all time and treated as a slave.

True story

This other person that reviewed the movie obviously doesn't know this is a true story, and the girl kidnapped was a16 old child. Having said that, I don't care about the movie, but until you're kidnapped in the 70's, kept in a goshdarn box and told lies about people watching you...shut the heckk up. She was a kid. This is a true story. It's devastating.

Top Tier Lifetime Movie

Overall I enjoyed this movie; it kept me engaged throughout and stuck fairly close to the true narrative, but did have a lot of creative liberties take .

Along with that, I thought the acting was good in this film. Addison Timlin have a good performance as Coleen Stan, and made the movie believable and the performances by Zane Holts and Zelda Williams were decent, not great, but well enough to make for a decent movie. The production and film direction were above average for its class, and that trend continued through the movie.

This is one of the better movies that Lifetime has released, so if you're a LT fan, it's right up your alley.

Incredible Acting. Unlike any LMN movie I've seen.

Really enjoyed this biography not so much for the story but for the realism created by the actors and the director. I'm truly amazed. This LMN movie has really blown my mind all around.

Much more than I expected

I actually thoroughly enjoyed this movie. For a lifetime movie I was hooked. Unbelievable what two human beings can do to somebody and how sick and demented the human mind can be. I'm so glad she was able to escape and tell her her story. The guy who plays Cam was a great actor. For a lifetime movie the acting was solid. I hated him the whole movie, but that's exactly what his job was as an actor to make us hate him.

I would recommend this movie to a true crime lover, like myself. I came into watching this movie with no knowledge of the real case. If you have about an hour and 20 minutes to spare, I would suggest anyone who hasn't seen this movie to give it a go.

Don't get the hype

Zane Holtz nearly ruined this (already pretty bad) movie with close-to one of the worst performances I've seen in recent years. The rest of this movie was just painfully average, and had an awful random yellow tint to it.

The case of Colleen Stan is an incredibly heinous, and interesting story. Do yourself a favour and go watch a documentary, instead of wasting an hour and a half with this.

How long have I been in here? The devastating story of Colleen Stan

Based on the real story of Colleen Stan who in 1977 was abducted by Cameron and Janice Hooker in California while hitchhiking to a friend's birthday, the movie explores the intense and shocking reality of those years in the life of Colleen.

Girl in the Box doesn't waste any time and from the beginning we are thrown into the story following a young couple riding in their truck. We're already aware this is not a normal couple, and when they stop for Colleen to give her a ride, an uncanny foreboding starts to shape before us. The film is compelling not only because it is based on real events but also because of the horrific nature of it all and how well it portrays the events that took place in those seven years. Seven years that were hell on earth considering the lengths the Hookers put young Colleen through. She was totally humiliated, debased, and abused while treated as a slave. These are the types of scars that, unlike physical ones, never heal. The performances were convincing all the time; Addison Timlin successfully conveys the psychological distress her character went through, the manipulation that took place, and how she, understandably, reacted after so much time deprived of her freedom. Zane Holtz successfully embodies the depravity, while Zelda Williams accurately portrays her character's evolution from fear to jealousy to guilt.

Stephen Kemp's Girl in the Box not only delves into themes of kidnapping and trauma, but also faith and patriarchal structures and how they can serve as a vehicle to realize the darkest of desires. The box is clearly the reification of traditional gender roles, a symbol of that macrocosm reality where "master" and "slave" signify not bondage codification but its immanent gender dynamics. This is precisely what philosophers describe as the risks of belief when they are not subjected to necessary scrutiny. Ultimately, the pessimism of the story is how we, as human beings, as subjects, cease to be in order to be looked as objects when under the gaze of others. A reminder that you cannot trust strangers, no matter how trustful they may look.

Bogeyman.

A thing or situation that inspires fear and dread. By exploiting someone's fears, one can psychologically manipulate her or him, even making accept a degrading reality. The protagonist displays remarkable resilience, which allows her to survive and forgive. The turning point of the story is the realization of being part of a morally unacceptable situation, which forces into unexpected complicity, in search of belated redemption.

While hitchhiking to visit a friend, Coleen Stan (Addison Timlin) encounters Cameron Hooker (Zane Holtz), who, with the complicity of his wife Janice (Zelda Williams), kidnaps her, keeping her in a box and treating her like a slave. Her father, Jack (Matt Cooke), and sister Bonnie (Brittany Allen) immediately contact the police, but since she is an adult, no search is carried out.

Director Stephen Kemp chooses not to show the torture and violence, leaving them only imaginary, instilling a psychological atmosphere of subjection and slavery; the screenplay, written by the director himself, is excessively slow, causing the narrative to lose some of its pace.

Best moments: After accepting a ride in the gas station bathroom, intuition tells you to fly away like a bird... A must-see for crime news fans.

Really well done and sickening

I've followed and read this story and the movie captured it really well. Amazing acting and just an all round sickening story. I love true crime and thus is one of those stories that sticks with you. How she overcame this is beyond me and the Stockholm syndrome is real! Brain washing and absolute turmoil but a must see. My husband felt sick watching it and the disregard for human life. I love lifetime movies but this didn't even feel like one, it was extremely well filmed and captured the essence of the horrific story perfectly. Moral of the story please don't hitch hike!!! I have before in my 20's...never again.

We've hardly done anything.

After Cameron kidnaps Colleen, whips her and imprisons her, he tells Janice, who wants to let Colleen go, that he has hardly done anything. Cameron is a smooth talking liar, and a sadist who is into bondage big time, and convinces Colleen that she is considered a slave, and the 'Company' is vast and powerful, and tracks down any slave that tries to escape, and it goes very badly for the slave. The irony is that Janice, who he says he originally bought her as a slave and is now his wife, is very much into the Bible. Cameron told Janice when they married, she took a vow to obey and that she has changed. He tells Colleen that her only chance is to sign a document to become a slave, to wear a neck band, and is to be referred to as "K", just the letter, and total obedience. Ones sees the effect of the Stockholm Syndrome. Even when she gets a chance to visit her family (being told it was a very rare and special event, and cost him $1500 to the company, and that during the visit, the company will be watching and listening, so she had better behave) she stays evasive. Her parents knew something was up, a cult perhaps. It was in her sixth year of captivity. Colleen was hitching in California, and when they stopped for gas, she didn't listen to her internal voice that told her to run. Supposed to be based on a true story which I have not investigated, but it seems somewhat manufactured for television.

One of the most intense lifetime films

This is one of the most powerful movies I've ever seen. It is absolutely compelling, gripping and emotional. This movie is very intense so if you are extremely sensitive (like me - this movie will haunt me for days) just be prepared. You'll feel a wave of emotions; anger, sadness, confoundment...and probably want to turn it off. I know I did.

I'm really conflicted as I believe a lot of people were after watching it because it was beautifully filmed and well acted by everyone throughout, especially Addison even though she doesn't say much and doesn't break out of what seems to be a constant state of shock and complacency maybe? I don't know but she really did an amazing job of not over acting and not under acting. I have great feelings about a film well done (acting, production, direction, cinematography, etc.) about an event so heartbreaking.

Surprisingly creepy film, beautifully filmed

This is a little hidden gem of a of a psycho killer movie, about a kidnapping that found place in 1977, of a young hitch hiking woman, picked up by an odd couple in rural California. The 20 year old woman is soon gagged and put in a wooden box and kept there for a long time, before being kept as a slave.

The film immediately gets your attention for being very beautifully filmed, and kept in sunny warm colors, asa contrast to the chilly story.

The film is also well acted, by the estranged couple, played by Zelda Williams and Zane Holtz, both doing a great job. The victim is played by Addison Timlin.

Well worth a watch!
