The film marks the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, the largest battle of WWI (British losses 481,842, German losses 236,194, French losses about 250,000). The director George Belfield mentions that his great-grandfather Wilbye survived the Somme and that his dad still has Wilbye's signet ring on his finger.
