A new trailer for the upcoming Netflix Western romance series, Ransom County, has now left the stables, with the footage teasing a tale of generational struggle over family land that is sure to have fans thinking of Taylor Sheridan’s monumental hit series, Yellowstone. Are you ready to get your yee-haw on this spring on Netflix? The streaming service debuts its new Western romantic drama series Ransom Canyon on April 17. Netflix previously shared a short teaser and a few photos in February ahead of the April release date, but on March 27, the streamer shared the full look at Ransom Canyon. Based on the book series of the same name by Jodi Thomas, the new drama centers on three ranching families in titular Texas town, where love, loss, land, loyalty, and legacy are all overarching themes these ranching dynasties can't run away from.

Updated, March 27, 2025: A new trailer, set to “Texas Sun” by Khruangbin and Leon Bridges, has arrived for Netflix’s latest Wester TV series Ransom Canyon, based on the book by Jodi Thomas.

“In Ransom Canyon,” Josh Duhamel’s voice says over shots of ranchers riding horses, the main thoroughfare of the small Texas town, high school football games and more. “Everyone’s running from something, or running to something.”

Duhamel stars as Staten Kirkland, one of the main ranchers in the titular town, who is part of a large ensemble of the new Netflix show, out April 17.

“What’s up with that guy anyway?” Jack Schumacher’s Yancy Grey, who can be seen later on in the trailer risking it all for a rodeo ride, asks Cap Fuller (James Brolin) about the stoic Staten.

“He lost everything,” Brolin replies over a montage of a car wreck and police sirens.

Once upon a time, in the not-so-distant year 2005, a group of space cops in colorful spandex took our TV screens by storm. Yes, we’re talking about Power Rangers S.P.D., the season that gave us futuristic crime-fighting, alien bad guys, and some of the best morphing sequences in the franchise.

Ransom Canyon will call on Josh Duhamel to ride a horse and basically live his best cowboy life. While the actor hails from North Dakota, his new drama is set in Texas. According to Tudum, Netflix’s online arm, the upcoming series “is a romance-fueled family drama and contemporary Western saga that charts the intersecting lives of three ranching families, all set against the rugged expanse of Texas Hill Country.”

This modern Western is based on a popular book series by New York Times bestselling author Jodi Thomas. Duhamel plays Staten Kirkland, “owner and sole occupant of the sprawling Double K Ranch. Staten leads the charge to resist the outside forces threatening his way of life and the land that he loves.”

Studio Babelsberg, the historic German studio that recently hosted “The Matrix Resurrections” production, has been acquired by Tpg Real Estate Partners.

The company, which is part of global alternative asset firm Tpg, first revealed plans to acquire a stake in the studio in September via Trep’s acquisition of Babelsberg’s main shareholder, Filmbetriebe Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (Fbb), which was controlled by Carl L. Woebcken and Christoph Fisser. As part of that deal, Fbb launched a public tender offer to acquire a majority of the shares in Studio Babelsberg, which went through in October.

All closing conditions of the transaction have now been fulfilled, the companies have said, with Woebcken and Fisser continuing to hold a minority stake in the studio.

The network in May postponed a renewal decision on four midseason drama series, which were either still airing or yet to premiere — sophomore Instinct, freshmen The Code and The Red Line, and third-year Canadian import Ransom. The Red Line, The Code and Ransom have since been canceled. They are now being joined by Instinct.

Instinct creator/executive producer Michael Rauch announced the cancellation on Twitter, revealing that the series will be double pumped this Sunday and will air its Season 2 series finale next Sunday, Aug. 25.

Anniversary Release

Fathom Events and Lionsgate have set a 35th anniversary release on Sept. 15 for “El Norte,” Gregory Nava’s drama about the dreams of immigrants from Central America.

“El Norte” has been set to coincide with the first day of National Hispanic Heritage Month. It will play in more than 200 movie theaters in select markets nationwide and include an exclusive introduction by Nava, whose films also include “Selena” and “Mi Familia.”

The screenings will also include a featurette that explores the making of the film with the film’s stars, Zaide Silvia Gutiérrez and David Villalpando. Nava’s introduction and the behind-the-scenes featurette will be presented in both English and Spanish.

Netflix’s controversial hit series, 13 Reasons Why, will return for a fourth-and-final season.

13 Reasons Why Season 4 has been made official by Netflix, setting up what will serve as the final season for the series.

Indeed, while the series recently released its third season, 13 Reasons Why will soon run out of reasons to cite, with a finish line now firmly on the horizon for its now-confirmed fourth season. While the number of Season 4 episodes were not confirmed, the show typically runs 13 episodes, with Season 3 being no exception. The final frame will see the series remain under creator/showrunner/Ep Brian Yorkey.

CBS has canceled military drama “The Code” after one season.

Star Dana Delany tweeted the news out on Tuesday, writing: “Thank you to all you wonderful people who watched @TheCodeCBS. Last night was our finale and sadly, no more. I’ll never make General. But I loved this cast of stellar actors & know we’ll meet again. Semper Fidelis.”

Monday night’s episode will now serve as its series finale. It drew a 0.3 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demo and had 2.9 million total viewers.

The series followed soldiers who tackled legal challenges facing the U.S. Marine Corps. Additionally, Smithsonian Channel and CBS Sports Network are currently unavailable on DirecTV nationwide. CBS Sports Network has also been dropped from DirecTV Now nationally.

“After months of negotiations, CBS is simply looking to receive fair value for its popular programming and is proposing economic terms similar to those that AT&T’s competitors have accepted in hundreds of our recent distribution agreements,” CBS said in a statement on Saturday. “The DirecTV deal expiring tonight was signed in 2012 and is nowhere close to today’s fair market terms for CBS content – to which AT&T’s competitors have repeatedly agreed.”

Additionally, Danielle Campbell will join Paul Wesley as the Season 1 stars currently set for a return to the anthology fairytale series. You know, the kind of fairytale that has lots of sex and murder. In other words, do not watch this series with your kids.

Suspense drama series Ransom, which has aired on CBS in the U.S., Global in Canada and TF1 in France, will not be getting a fourth season. The series’ team announced the end of the show to fans Wednesday.

For CBS, Ransom was a low-cost acquisition, which the network had been using to keep the lights on Saturdays. According to sources, it was the producers’ decision to end the series over funding issues.

The cancelation hardly comes as a surprise given that “Ransom” was among the lowest-rated shows on broadcast last season. It averaged a 0.26 rating in the key 18-49 demographic and just over 2.3 million viewers per episode throughout its third season.

An individual with knowledge of the situation tells TheWrap the cancellation did not come from CBS, and was due to the fact the producers behind “Ransom” — which is an internationally co-produced series — made the decision not to go forward with the show due to a lack of funding.

The Red Line has reached the final stop at CBS. 

The Eye network has swung the ax on the freshman drama after one low-rated season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"[The show] did not get picked up for a second season, so it will exist as an elegant novel," co-showrunner Sunil Nayar revealed to the website at the Atx Television Festival.

The Red Line ultimately averaged 3.85 million total viewers and a CW-esque 0.36 rating in the adults 18-49 demo.

It was the network's second-lowest rated scripted drama, coming in marginally ahead of Saturday drama Ransom. 

The Noah Wyle fronted drama focused on a white cop in Chicago who mistakenly shoots and kills a back doctor.

Brazil’s Grupo Globo and Sony Pictures Television have closed a milestone multi-title production-distribution alliance to co-develop and co-produce two English-language scripted dramas, with a third project forthcoming, all aimed squarely at global markets.

The pioneering alliance was announced Friday at this year’s La Screenings.

Brazil-based and Spt-backed Floresta, is set to co-produce the ambitious new drama series with Globo Studios. Spt will have global distribution rights outside of Brazil.Spt will most probably mix own distribution on Sony channels and sales to third party networks. “We are blessed with some great networks and I’m sure some of them will be excited by these projects, but in other territories we’ll also be looking outside of the Sony networks,” said Wayne Garvie, president international production, Sony Pictures Television.

Globo plans to broadcast the dramas on its free-to-air channel in primetime and on Grupo Globo’s platforms.
