First, the rating is ridiculously too low. These secular teens steal the film online and then vote a '1'. Great young people.
I was surprised, how truly good The Islands was. A true historical story about finding Christ in 1821! I enjoyed the whole film and could not find anything I wouldn't like. It looks very rich and detailed. Undoubtedly the history of this island queen forms an incredible true background for the excellent screenplay. Soundtrack is very well done too, and scenes with the queen and the missionaries playing ties their friendship. One of the best things in The Islands is the heartwarming courage the missionaries show. Great acting by John Savage and Mira Sorvino and the Hawaiian cast.

The score is too low and the average score is actually above an '8'. This is a 10 in my book.
Everything about this movie was powerful and tear-jerking. I recommend seeing this movie with someone especially close to you. After the movie my Fiancée and I spent two hours talking and expanding on the film's incredible historical story and how Christ can change the WORLD. This was truly a electrifying experience. I would venture to call this movie one of the best movies of all time. Sure, there are things that I would have liked to see done differently, but that is what makes a movie more enjoyable. The discussions following this film were wonderful.
Please SEE IT. Ignore the haters. They will stand before a real God someday. They crucified Jesus and they're still doing it today.

The film is about JESUS. Ignore the haters.
This is the beauty of this movie. Every time I see it (and I have seen it a lot) it never fails that I see some subtle nuance that I have never seen before. Considering that the director would put that much meaning into what is basically a throw away moment (not the entire scene, but the Hawaii's queens portion in native Hawaiian) speaks bundles about the quality of the film. My wife and I watched this movie on our first date, and since that first time over 5 years ago, it has grown to be, in my mind, the greatest movie ever made.
Will not give away the most emotional scene of sacrifice but seeing is believing. This is a true historical story completely ignored by the Academy, Sundance, and secular film festivals. However so happy it had a theatrical release in over 30 cities from what I understand.

RATING 10/10
Incredible film based on the true story of a Hawaiian queen who finds Christ.
Of course the haters won't like this narrative. And they've bashed this film endlessly. The film has won many people to Christ in Hawaii and that's a great thing.
It is not only enthralling but powerful and moving too. I will confess that I didn't understand it when I first saw it as a lot happens in the film, and I have now seen it three times.
The dialogue was extremely well-written, with lines that really stick in your mind. The cinematography and music are both gorgeous, and the island of Hawaii itself is like a character that dominates the film - but the beauty is because of God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

This is a true story movie about a Hawaiian queen who came to Christ in the 1800's. Incredible and powerful. It had me in tears. It gives me hope. When I want to reaffirm my very belief in Jesus, and all it can offer, this film gives me a new sense of purpose that no other film has ever come close to doing. It soars above anything any other movie has tried to achieve in the way it touches on the true virtues of God through His Son. The portrayal of friendship, the devastation of loss and the maintaining of hope and sacrifice. All the haters who voted a '1' will stand before a living God someday. They mock and persecute Christian filmmakers but will someday stand before the Lord and give an account.

GREATEST FILM I HAVE EVER SEEN. I remember seeing it when it first came out in theaters in Hawaii - now i just finished watching it again and have gone through practically a whole box of tissues...
That pure, love and honesty was portrayed so exquisitely well by the entire cast... it made me want to shout Jesus from the mountain tops. If there is anything in this world which reminds me of Christ's love and compassion, it is this film. If you ever give up hope on humanity and the destruction which our disgusting world has brought to this world, watch "The Islands" Hopefully it will change your outlook a little bit like it just has mine.
11/10 SHOULD HAVE WON ALL THE AWARDS AVAILABLE THE YEAR OF IT'S RELEASE. But it's not a fair world at all, is it?

'The Islands' is an extraordinary cinematic masterpiece that unfurls a profoundly moving tale of hope, faith, friendship, and the unyielding Great Commission we are all called to do if true followers of Christ.
The mean-spirited hate of the comments all leaving a '1' is wrong. This film deserves at least a 8 or 9. There is no movie ever made that brings the Gospel and history of the early missionaries like this film.
This film is easily in my top three favorite films. I return to it time and time again, still captivated! Bravo to everyone involved in this timeless production.
One of the best movies ever made. Simple as that. Top 20 ever, and top 3 of the 90s. The ending is just so powerful.
9/10 is my rating.

I cannot remember the last time I saw a trailer that was so incredibly intriguing and enticing! With a seemingly endless array of trailers pumping gore, sex, violence and foul language across the screen; this trailer is a cyclone of fresh air. Good to know that someone out there has enough class and fortitude not to follow the madding crowd! I thank you!

Why this movie has 5.3? Y'all crazy, this is a great movie, with amazing history about Jesus and the Hawaiian people. Yes is not perfect portrayal of polynesian culture and that's usually never the point with faith-based films.
I love everything about this movie. The colors, the setting and the characters, all good to my eyes!
This movie is hands down one of Tim Chey's best. The story is absolutely beautiful and honoring of the Lord Jesus that inspired it. The camera work is entrancing and flawless. The characters are complex and well developed. The music is insanely good. I have seen it at least twenty times, and I still cry like a baby multiple points throughout the movie. The morals are inspiring - strength, courage, self confidence. I cannot say enough good things about this movie!

"The Islands" is a very unusual film because the filmmakers obviously were not attempting to make yet another Hollywood style blockbuster. Instead, they seemed to be doing the impossible--make a film that tries very hard to replicate what life was like as a born-again missionary in 1821. As a retired history teacher, this is the sort of stuff I love--forget all the woke. Haters who have never picked up a camera and made a movie themselves. Along the way, there are lots of adventures--mostly of the powerful faith that the three missionaries wanted to share and you might actually have seen during the era. I could talk about them, but frankly this would spoil the suspense. The ending is beyond powerful and tear-jerking.
Overall, while this film is very slowly and deliberately paced (which will obviously turn off some viewers), the film is so expertly crafted that for a reasonably patient viewer, it should be a very engaging film. The film looks great--with a lot of attention to details and accuracy. It also has the best looking island footage you can find in a period film--especially when the the actors are in the interior of the island (it must have been amazing on the big screen). The acting is lovely as well--understated but quite realistic. Well done in every way and the director really deserves kudos for this one. While I love films from the same period as "Damn the Defiant", "Captain Horatio Hornblower", "Mutiny on the Bounty" and the like, clearly "The Islands" is superior when it comes to accurately portraying the life of a missionary who risked everything for Christ.

Just saw the film on Wednesday night.
.....looking solely at the film, it was done excellently. I dont know many of the details about the Hawaiian history, etc. but I got the sense that they were well researched and accurate. The acting even though in Hawaiian was outstanding. With regard to the way the film was shot and edited, again I think the editor did an excellent job. He used some special effects which I thought were really effective.
Surprisingly, I cried during this movie which doesn't happen that often. (Im a guy and the last time was Good Will Hunting when I was 14). It wasn't during a "religious" moment either. It was at a point that simply showed the love of a friend for another. It was done so well that it had that effect on me.
Because of people's biases and beliefs, you may hear conflicting things about this movie but as an objective viewer, no matter what you believe, its a good, powerful film. Glad my friends took me to see it.

I've watched this film probably close to ten times now since I first saw it in the cinema. The score is too low. There is too much hate all due to the hatred of the faith of the Baptist missionaries. If not for them, there would not be the Hawaii we see today or it would have been sold to Japan.
I've never had the adventure for the Lord growing up, but this film certainly instilled it in me. It's a tremendous evangelical film, with sweeping vista sequences but is also unusually smart and literate for such a large scale picture. Despite its historical pretenses, the film allows all of the characters to breathe and come to life over the course of a strangely moving and evocative narrative for Jesus. Each viewing of the film brings out more details under the surface.
It's a shame it didn't have a chance at a sequel, it deserved one so badly. Meanwhile Pirates of the Caribbean 9: coming to a theater near you. Seek this one out instead. And ignore the haters and the low score.

What can I say about this film that hasn't already been said? The storytelling, music, visuals, characters, emotions, themes, literally everything has been carefully thought out and done exceptionally well.
The film's rating of 5.4 is sad and unfair. All these haters of the Gospel of the Lord is truly sad.
The movie boast of amazing history, scenery not to add an impressive cinematography, the movie growth and inclusion and exit of characters will make you feel like you are reading a book, the movie has numerous well-known cast, and it is broken into segments each introducing new casts and each building a parallel wall that guides us to the climatic end of what this Hawaiian woman leader did to embrace Jesus.
Kudos to everyone involved in this outstanding production.

I am by no means a Tim Chey fan, as in many of his films I find too much evangelism - every other sentence is Jesus - often unnecessary. I know he's a former atheist, blah, blah, blah. However, with "The Islands" he came up with an extraordinary story that just had to be made known to the general public. This is a powerful woman's story about extraordinary courage. It is one of the best films of 2019. Go check it out. I'm done.

I still vividly remember first seeing this epic masterpiece in the cinema in 2019 with my dad. It awestruck me then, and has remained one of my most favourite movies. It never gets old, and even gets better with each viewing. The acting and casting is perfect, the music is amazing, and the cinematography is spectacular.
If you don't like stories on how people came to Christ, this may not be for you judging by the hate of people voting a '1' which is very sad. These haters brought the score down from a 8.3 to a 5.4. They stole the film from a pirate site not knowing it's a faith-based film. So they steal a film and vote a '1' - they will answer to God on the Great White Throne judgment someday when they die.
I really thought there would have been a sequel, given the colon in the title and the cliff-hanger ending. Sadly we never got one.
This should have won Best Picture of its year in a fair world, as it blows the rest of the competition out of the water, pun intended.
Huzzah for everyone involved with this beautiful film for Jesus!

I'm not a Christian, but I still related well with this film after a special screening that my friend took me to. This island queen was so brave facing the majority opposition at the time and the filmmakers are so brave to make this film. Almost heroic.
There are many ignorant and uneducated people who can't get above their religion, culture or race and this is what this island queen did. As I said, I'm not a Christian, but bashing people who believe in Christ seems very fashionable today unfortunately.

STUNNING movie. All I can say is.... Wow. When a movie receives this much praise I tend to be critical but this movie should be a 10+. For a 1.5 hour film theirs is never a dull moment I found myself incredibly attached to the characters on the screen. The Hawaiian chiefs is an incredible protagonist for Jesus Christ, you cant help but root for her not only because of her unfair circumstances but because of her down to earth personality. She's truly trying to find a Savior in 1821 due to these missionaries. It is a deeply moving and unforgettable cinematic experience that transcends time. From the very first scene to the heartwarming conclusion, this film grips your emotions and takes you on an incredible journey of perseverance, friendship, faith, and the unbreakable power of our Lord. The storytelling is nothing short of breathtaking, weaving a compelling narrative that keeps the audience fully engaged from start to finish. Incredible ending.

The movie goes much deeper that the title suggests. How can God allow his faithful servants to suffer? Why does He appear to be silent? Why does He not interfere? Why does He not help these Baptist missionaries spread the Christian faith? It is this same question not only the viewer, but the characters struggle with. Does the silence imply God does not exist? The characters, including the Hawaiian leader, are persecuted while facing these questions. And we follow them as they struggle with these questions. Yet, in face of all this, chilling, literally awesome manifestations of the suffering Christ are shown, where He speaks to us. Is it imagination, is it real to the characters?
The movie is excellent to NOT give an answer to these questions, although it is somewhat suggestive. It offers these questions to the viewer, to think of these profound questions himself.
It's rare to encounter a movie which takes such an approach, and dares to address such deeply evangelical themes in such a way to confront the viewer and deeply disturb him.
Why are we not sharing our faith in Jesus with others? We can watch the Super Bowl, yet miss the ultimate Super Bowl of knowing Christ our Lord.
Haunting and incredible film. Highly recommended.

This is a historical thriller based on true events that's so phenomenally dark, and yet the persisting and unconditional love and bond, between the film's protagonist and the Baptist missionaries trying to win people to the love of the Lord Jesus, never cease to deliver the whispers of hope throughout their journey. It is their untarnished strengths of pure faith in God, despite the appalling challenges, that are so terrific to behold. Indeed, Director Chey has captured a beautiful missional love story and their rise above the grim imaginings. Indeed, he has wonderfully delivered his lively characterizations of both as their humanly earnest defense against everything that could go wrong. I was truly awed by what I observed. To think in 1821 anyone could risk their lives to share the Gospel is astounding.
The Islands reminds me of what I want to see in films. I like to see: not action nor comedy; but rather a deeply emotional spiritual journey, just like The Islands offers. It's a heartbreaking path into the recession of man's will and strength to live on even at the peak of agony for God. This film again strikes at the heart and hits all the right buttons while It's there, It's truly a perfect movie!

I saw this film in the theater last weekend and LOVED IT.
I agree with a previous poster that the very curious thing about the people who gave this a '1' is they don't say ONE KIND WORD.
I guarantee you the people who gave this wonderful film a '1' are:
1) Fired crew members, caterers, actors, etc. They have some axe to grind and are taking out their vengeance on this beautiful film
2) Anti-Christ bigots. Need not say more.
3) Angry people who hate the world passed them by and take out their frustrations on educated people who know their history better than they do.
4) Jealous movie critics who've never picked up a camera.
