Although set in Kentucky, the filming actually takes place in western Pennsylvania, in the Pittsburgh area.

The term Bren'in is used in the series in reference to the leader of the clan. Brenin is the Welsh word for King.

Scenes depicting the sheriff's car driving through the town of Blackburg, Kentucky in the opening credits were filmed in the town of West Newton, Pennsylvania. The bridge that appears several times throughout the first season (the one that Asa Farrell walks across) is the West Newton bridge on State Route 136.

The mill that is seen in the first few minutes of the pilot episode is the United States Steel Corporation (USS) Clairton Plant located along State Route 837 in Clairton, Pennsylvania.

Much of the high mountain scenery shown between scenes was shot in North Carolina on Grandfather Mountain. There also appears to be some shots from the Black Mountain range in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.
