Not a horror or a thriller movie

I liked this movie. It was a drama and social commentary on child abuse and neglect, and PTSD after traumatic events. While the subject matter of child abuse is indeed quite horrifying, to call this move a horror or even a thriller is quite the stretch. There was no suspense building, and no elements of the film that drew an immediate, autonomic reaction of either disgust or terror.

I enjoyed it.

+1 Star for a Great Line

It was a story told well. It's definitely a reference to a backwoods culture. It's not about city dwellers. It does have a few flaws, but to me it was worth the watch. It was a bit of a surprise. We need more stories about finding lost children!!!

Solid 7

I thoroughly enjoyed this film, I was expecting a poorly acted and generic story but what I got was a well acted drama/mystery witch had you genuinely caring about the characters which is not common these days.

Unexpectedly beautiful

I thought I was going to watch a horror movie, maybe about a woman with PTSD who sees a boy in the woods and you can never be sure if it's a ghost or if she's losing her sanity. Fortunately I was I wrong. The actors were great, the scenery was beautiful and this movie ended up breaking my heart in a million pieces.

Glad I watched this one

I love what they did with this movie! It's sitting at a 5.9 right now, and that makes me a little sad; this is a wonderful movie. Great acting, great scenery, great music, great twists, nice story, just great all around.

7/10, recommended.

Compelling and mysterious.

This is a wonderfully original horror story involving an Army Veteran (Fern Sreaves, played by Leven Rambin), who returns home to discover a lone boy in the forest surrounding her home. The child, Cecil, is (mercifully) played in a very appealing fashion by Landon Edwards. Any sign of precociousness sometimes displayed by juvenile performers would have destroyed the story - because Cecil might not be an ordinary boy. As Fern is warned by several family members and townsfolk, there are rumours about a deadly spirit in the form of a child. When Fern begins to get sick, events take on a yet darker turn ...

I really enjoyed this film. Director and co-writer Ramaa Mosley has crafted a terrific, increasingly compelling and mysterious tale that manages to be occasionally unnerving and sinister without employing much in the way of traditional horror trappings. Because of this, some viewers might feel a little short-changed by the lack of traditional scares and effects. For me, this wonderful looking, rustic, haunted woodlands story is very enjoyable and in places, genuinely moving. My score is 8 out of 10.

Surprisingly Good

For a low budget independent film, this hits all the good marks. Photography, sound, and script are excellent. Well-developed characters.

I've lived in areas such as in this film and the settings and people are accurately depicted. Sad, lonely, buckets of despair, with a glimmer of progress towards love.

Well worth a watch.

Beautiful drama

Is it horror? No. I read the reviews before watching so I knew not to expect any scares. What I did not expect was a beautifully written and well acted story about love, family, and superstition.

Not a bad movie, but

But why is everyone so mean? The main character is unlikable, she's surly and unpleasant. Everyone she interacts with is also unpleasant. There are no smiles or hugs. Are people in the Ozarks really this unfriendly?

Lost Child

Lost Child is most effective when it is watched as a Sunday afternoon, TV movie. If you go into it with that it in mind, you most likely will find it enjoyable.

It was okay

.. but it wasn't a horror film. If you go into this film thinking you're about too watch something scary you may be disappointed. I would actually say it was more of a heartwarming film than any other genre (maybe a drama?). The little boy made my heart hurt he was so adorable bless him I thought he acted the part really well. There were a few parts that didn't seem to lead anywhere but may be I am just not connecting the dots.i wasn't bored or didn't want to turn it over so it gets a 6.

Compelling

Compelling. We don't know what it's like to come from these communities. And it was all about drugs actually. Certainly mental health is also prominent and even though a fairly close knit community carries so much prejudice. I was gripped and wanted to know how it all panned out.

Interesting

Fern is finished with the military (15 yrs Army) and comes home to her dead father's house in the Ozarks. She says she is only going to be there long enough to connect with her brother Billy. But she is warned that deep into the woods are dangers. One day in the woods, she comes across Cecil, a young boy who says he has no family. He is very polite and has quite a bit of knowledge for a young child. She lets Cecil stay, and works with a social worker to try and locate his family. Meanwhile, she is on a quest to connect with Billy, and when she does, finds that Billy really hates her and wants nothing to do with her. That doesn't discourage her. However, she seems to be getting sick, and the local doctor implies it is due to Cecil. That Cecil is a child of the woods, and he takes the health away from another and gets stronger by doing so, a Tatterdemalion. And Fern suffers from PTSD, so her functioning level is not all that great, and everything points to Cecil being exactly that. But is that really the situation, or is that all folklore? The movie is hampered by some really bad plot holes and errors that simply did not have to be there, but stick out too sharply to be ignored. It is not a horror movie. It is more a mystery movie.

WARNING NOT A HORROR or THRILLER movie but DRAMA with no ending

I really regret not reading the reviews before; I saw it because Amazon recommended it as a horror movie, oh boy how disgusted I am now.

I hate this art-house wannabe producers and directors with their drama crap and no ending , it is lame that 'left to the audience' open ending... that's not new, there's nothing ground-breaking about 'leaving things to imagination', I hate that stuff, and hate that producers and directors don't hint or warn about that.

Hopefully, people like me will read this and avoid this title at any cost.

A complete waste of my time, I feel robbed.

A bit different from the norm...

Pretty interesting plot! Not the best, not the worst, somewhere in the middle. A bit different angle, always welcome since it often seems all they offer are mindless remakes of original movies! It's a good way to pass a little time, I felt. No spoilers here, just a moderate recommendation if you're looking for something a little different from the standard blood-and-guts horror fare.

A slow burn drama NOT horror.

Interesting use of backwoods folklore to add suspense to a otherwise slow (and I do mean slow) burn drama. There is no actual horror parts to the movie. It's was catching enough that once I was to a certain point I finished the whole movie but I was multitasking as the same time. Your undivided attention is not necessary to understand the movie. If interested in old time hillbilly lore it will be worth the time.

Not great, but not bad either

This is a fairly entertaining flick. It kind of keeps you in suspense. It does have the typical annoying clichés in some parts, but overall it makes for a decent horror/suspense. Actually it's more of a suspense/mystery/drama type of movie than a horror. The acting is decent, but I did find some relationships between the characters, especially between the main actress and her brother, to be over the top and kind of ridiculous. It just seems ridiculous that her brother in the movie is so nasty to her. Seriously, he's just annoying. But the boy plays a good part, and the scenery in the movie is nice. Takes place in a rural area and has nice scenery throughout. Overall a suspenseful movie, a little bit slow burn, but still worth a watch. It's a little ridiculous to think she'd be able to just keep a lost kid in the woods, but it's just a movie.

Drama, not horror, but a good one regardless

They messed up the marketing on this one, they should have kept that original poster and not switched it to infer a horror movie or popped that label onto this.

That said, if you can ignore what the marketing says and just enjoy this for what it is, it's really good. I'm somewhat biased here cause I'm Appalachian. This is based in Missouri, but about 90% of this movie just reminds me of the same folklore and tales I grew up with and still hear in the hollers where I live, the accents are familiar to me, the setting is authentic and familiar. Pretty much this could have been made in my hometown and I'd believe it.

This might not be a horror but it does toe the line of backwoods southern Gothic suspenseful drama, and that enriches what might be an otherwise boring story. Could it be more fleshed out? Sure. But for an indie film, it does fine and keeps your attention and can snag your empathy, it's very heartfelt. I would have been a bit more compelled to watch it before now if I knew the setting and all, but that's okay.

Very very boring

Feel free to watch for yourself, but it's extremely boring. If you can make it through the entire movie in one sitting, give yourself a pat on the back then a slap for wasting your time.

Excellent anti-horror film

Up to a certain point, I agree that this movie is not horror. Horror films are usually crowded with ghosts, demons, devils, witches, necromancers, zombies, vampires, monsters, evil kids (sometimes from space), evil creatures, evil spirits, people possessed by evil spirits and other such utter nonsense of the sort (which I nonetheless admit to enjoy--and sometimes love--watching!). So, in that respect, this is not a horror film. On the other hand, having being raised in a cult, having watched a woman "possessed" and a relative attempting to perform an exorcism on her, and having spent years terrified of being possessed by demons myself, I have first-hand knowledge of the true horror this movie shows: the real-life damage that beliefs can wreak on the most vulnerable. Thank you to everyone who made this movie! You helped me in the ongoing process of healing the little "demon" inside.
