Actually Rather Clever

Five Nights at Freddy's or FNAF as sometimes shortened has taken the gaming world by storm it seems as a breakthrough hit of 2014 and a new darling of the independent scene. The game a simple point and click survival game seems pretty simple but has enough layers of complexities to make it interesting.

With all the buzz and hype surrounding it and a very passionate and vocal fanbase around it, it's no doubt causing enough of the love-it-or-hate it rift among gamers, with some saying this is incredible and other saying it's the worst thing to happen to games. Here is my take. Yes I do enjoy these series of games and this one caught me by surprise.

Survival Horror games lately have been something of a dying breed as the technology of games has improved incredibly the need of suspense has gone with it. Flashy graphics, high quality animations have subverted the need for old time spooky feelings. FNAF however is survival horror at its very basic because all you can do is survive.

While it is easy to write FNAF off as simply a game of nothing more than cheap jump-scares and it has plenty of them, the suspense of the game lies in playing with your auditory senses, before the robots come to scare you and your reflexes as you use only a few basic measures to keep your self alive. You don't walk around, you don't blast away zombies or other monsters, you sit and you open and close doors, check cameras to keep tabs on your foes and hold out enough power. It doesn't sound the most riveting but its the simplicity that captures the imagination. It's a very back to basics form of gaming that's been lost in the era of highly bloated budgeted games.

The scare factor wears off as the nights progress and FNAF becomes less of a scary game and more of a game of luck and stress management, especially when you delve into the extremely difficult mode by setting all AI program levels to max. Your patience and your tolerance for loud screeching sounds will be tested and for someone like me who has never been a fan of purely luck driven games somehow I managed to still find it enjoyable.

FNAF can scare you, bore you or just catch your imagination with the absurd amount of lore surrounding this game. Fans have really elevated a simple concept with a horrifying in-universe back story and Scott Cawthon has been all to happy to oblige by expanding on this and giving just enough taste of mystery and suspense to keep us coming for more.

A nice and very unique horror experience, before some minutes, it turns quite boring

Five Nights at Freddy's (2014) Plot: 8.3/10 Gameplay: 7.2/10 Design: 7.8/10 Atmosphere: 10/10 Sound Effects and OST: 7.7/10 Graphics: 5.7/10 Scary Factor: 7.3/10 Content: 3.9/10

FINAL SCORE: 7.2/10 (7 stars out of 10) The classic one! The one who started it all, for sure, The king of nostalgia, bringing us back to 2014! The atmosphere is great, remembering to us, how scary the first game was, good lore start and effective scares, but I feel FNAF 1 pretty overrated, because it fails with it's minimum content and non-challenging gameplay (except for 20/20/20/20 mode)

A charming and mildly spooky diversion, "Five Nights at Freddy's" is a solid little horror experience. Becomes more and more rewarding thanks to near-limitless plot analysis.

Perhaps one of the most famous and infamous of viral sensations to emerge over the past few years is Scott Cawthon's wildly popular media franchise "Five Nights at Freddy's"- a horror series that started rather humbly with the release of this original game only two short years ago.

An independent point-and-click game, the narrative follows a night- watch security guard recently hired at the popular children's restaurant chain " Freddy Fazbear's Pizza." The gimmick of the restaurant being it's highly advanced cast of adorable animatronic animals who have the ability to roam freely, including the titular "Freddy." However, as there is fear that the animatronic's servos would lock up should they stop moving for prolonged periods of time, they are allowed to walk freely throughout the restaurant during the night... And it quickly becomes apparent that should one of these characters discover you during the night, you're in for a nasty surprise! And so, you must use a simplified control scheme to keep watch of the characters on CCTV monitors and try to keep them from discovering you by locking doors around you.

The graphics and controls are extremely simplistic, but that's a big part of the charm of the gameplay. You can't really run away- you're stuck and only have a limited supply of energy to close and lock the doors. It's an elegant and simple mechanic that inherently and quickly generates thrills and chills... being stuck in one place creates an automatic sense of claustrophobia and paranoia that works wonders for the atmosphere. Cawthon's design work is also top-notch, as not only do the animatronic's look true-to-life in comparison to those that exist in the real world (including the obvious reference to a certain mouse-based pizza place/arcade), but they're also quite startling and can quickly turn devious at the drop of a dime. The design-work for the building itself is very nice as well, with the usual "happy" look of a restaurant looking very spooky in the dark.

This is also a game (and a series as a whole) that rewards in-depth plot rumination and analysis. While you can play it simply based on its high-concept (and admittedly somewhat shallow) premise alone, there's a lot of very subtle imagery, suggestions of treachery and even some phenomenal sub-text that is evident throughout that hints of a greater storyline taking place. You can start to piece together the history of the going's on and theorize as to what exactly is causing all of the horror, and it adds a lot to the experience. Especially when played in context of the overall franchise, as each of the games slowly add more and more to the story as a whole.

Were I to lodge any complaints against it, it would be that the gameplay can become a bit monotonous over time (especially towards the end), it can be hard to get a handle on things and sometimes the subtle hints of backstory are... well... way too subtle. But that cannot detract from an otherwise pretty darned fun and entertaining new horror-phenomena. For only a few dollars on your phone's app- store or online, you could definitely do a lot worse. And it's definitely well-worth checking out for horror fans.

I give the original "Five Nights at Freddy's" a strong 8 out of 10.

Five Nights at Freddy's Review

There's not really mutch to talk about here, because it's a pretty small game. So this is a short review.

Scott Cawthon (Creator) managed to do something special here, the animatronics are creepy aswell as being child friendly animals that you can hug. He took something that all players felt an amount of safety and entertainment around and made that change. The gameplay is unique making you come up with a way to survive yourself, which gives a very creepy atmosphere. It's insane to think about how these games have evolved, and for the most part in a good way. If I have to give one negative it's that the cameras aren't really that necessary since you only have to check Foxy and Freddy, but they're still better implemented than they are in FNaF 2.

Favorite horror game of all time, but it was ruined by the toxic fandom

I adore this game, although I haven't play it personally, I just simply watch game plays of it and I enjoy it a lot.

But what's stopping me from getting a higher rating is the fandom, they either have cringy OCs or ships (Not gonna lie, I hate shipping two robots, and I admit I made some animatronic OC, but that's 3-4 years ago.) And they're so picky on opinion. For example, if I ever say that I don't like Foxy (Which is kinda true, because I like Bonnie more.) I would be simply attack by a tidal wave of cringe-worthy, 9 years old Foxy fangirls.

Even though this game is great, I found I have a hard time catching up with the story, it takes strong thinking and analyzing to figure out the lore, but that's just me being nick-picky.

Overall, I enjoy the game itself, it's just the fandom that ruined the fun.

Overrated and terrible

It use to be fun at the time and now every since the fanbase was born, it got destroy by fan art and stupid stuff like that. And most people praise the game because of the storyline? What storyline? It's an indie game not a full pledge game. The fanbase is terrible like the Rick and Morty fanbase like they will attack you because of your opinion on this game! I'm not scared of them because they're little kids like 98% of them are. This is a terrible and very un scary game also quit it with the jumpscare already it's old now. Cringy fanbase, enough said! 1.5/10

The start of an amazing franchise

Scott Cawthon's first hit game and an icon in the Horror Games genre, Five Nights at Freddy's is a point-and-click with an easy-to-learn concept that had a very strong impact on the gaming community and remained relevant for a long time on YouTube, where reputable YouTubers such as Markiplier and Jacksepticeye made videos that lead the game to become popular in a relatively short time among teenagers. The game's success was due to its simplicity and shallow story (which turned into a complex timeline in the following games), making it a good introduction to horror games. An important fact to note is that Five Nights at Freddy's was the driving force behind other game franchises, such as Hello Neighbour and Bendy and the Ink Machine.

The story behind this game is simple: the protagonist is hired to work as a Night Guard for five nights (from Midnight to 6am) in a pizzeria similar to the American fast-food chain Chuck E. Cheese. Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria presents itself as a decaying pizzeria for children's parties where shows are put on by a group of four animatronic robots (Freddy Bear, Chica the Chicken, Bonnie the Rabbit and Foxy the Fox). The protagonist's job (which is controlled by the player) is to make sure that nothing happens to the place during the night, keeping an eye on every room in the pizzeria via a video surveillance system. This is when the "horror" element of the game comes into play: the robots come to life at night and are hostile towards the player, who can only close the office doors to protect himself from the robots' attacks (the "jumpscares"). The use of the office doors, the video surveillance cameras and the torch is limited to a percentage of the battery which, when runs out, leaves the player totally vulnerable. Each robot has a behavioural pattern that becomes more complex as the nights progress, leading the player to have a reaction time of mere seconds in order to not lose the game. The game's narrative is implied by small pieces of paper and objects scattered around the setting, as well as by easter eggs that may appear during each night and through the phone calls of "Phone Guy", the protagonist's supposed instructor who calls at the beginning of each night to explain what we should do (and who ends up revealing some of the events of this reality). Basically, the strategy of Five Nights at Freddy's is simple, with the player simply having to memorise the behaviour patterns of each robot and prevent imminent attacks through the sounds made and the use of office doors and video surveillance cameras, requiring strategy and attention throughout the game.

Despite its simplicity, Five Nights at Freddy's has generated a huge community of fans and had such an influence on POP culture that it has spawned more than 13 games, 28 books and the film that premiered on 1 November 2023. Despite being considered a game with old-fashioned graphics and gameplay, it offers the player a healthy challenge that is neither easy nor difficult. Once the player has completed the "Story Mode" (which consists of the five nights), they can still do the 6th Night (a more difficult night) and, finally, they can choose the difficulty of each robot (from 0 to 20) in the "Custom Night Mode" (where the 4/20 difficulty challenge represents the most difficult way to play the game). All that remains for me to say is that Five Nights at Freddy's is a simple game with a mild level of terror (basically zero for true fans of horror classics) and a good way to introduce the theme of horror games to new players. Although it doesn't offer much in the way of long-term entertainment (it can become repetitive or boring), it can provide a few hours of fun and a lot of satisfaction for the player when they complete each of the five nights. With that, I close this review by giving the game a rating of 7/10.

Five Nights at Freddy's Review!

Five Nights at Freddy's has always been my favorite horror franchise, and it still is to this day. Also still to this day the first game is the best one, both the atmosphere and animatronics look amazing. The gameplay is still really good and at the time the game first came out the gameplay was completely unique, the game is also really creepy and can definitely give you a scare. All the 5 animatronics have the differences as well. Freddy is usually not active that much until you get to Night 4 but Freddy is definitely one of the most menacing of the rest, Foxy is absolutely creepy as hell and can definitely make you jump once you see him sprinting straight to you, then both Bonnie and Chica feel pretty similar to each other with the only difference in there AI is Bonnie comes to the left door while Chica goes to the right door, and then Golden Freddy is the most scariest of the 5 but he is also the least active though if he does appear you can't do anything to stop him from killing you. Then the final part of the game that is absolutely amazing is the lore, it's about 5 children being murdered by a man and then being stuffed up into the 5 animatronics which is the reason why they seem smart and is also why the animatronics make this weird moaning sound throughout the game. Overall this is an amazing classic horror game, and Five Nights at Freddy's will probably always remain as my Favorite Horror Franchise of all time!

Absolutely amazing

Now, normally, as a 15 year old who struggles with nightmares, I never thought I would watch this movie. It was amazing! The costumes looked so cool and I really loved Josh Hutcherson's role as the security guard! I'd say this is a must watch for old FNAF fans and new. Lots of easter eggs and fun little jumpscares! And the casting and acting was amazing. I recommend this as a fun time halloween movie for my horror peeps or non horror peeps! Also, it has not a whole lot of blood/gore scenes but it really helps non horror peeps be able to enjoy the film without worrying about getting nightmares.

Had so much fun!!

I went with a few friends and my gf. I loved the movie so much!!! There were a lot of references to the lore and little things that a few of my friends and I caught, even my friends and gf who aren't obsessed with the lore like I am still got to enjoy the movie!

I love the way that they portrayed the dialectic of the animatronics, their good side as well as their bad side. And don't get me started on the cast, it was SO GOOD!!

I know my friends and I would all love to see more movies take on more fan service rather than trying to entertain new people to the franchise, FNAF made a wise choice to choose their fans over money. And it will still be a big payout!
