"Noah" continued Emma Watson's poor Rotten Tomatoes streak since it has a 41 percent Audience Score on the website. The 2014 epic biblical drama received mixed reviews; critics praised it, but audiences disagreed. Watson redeemed herself in 2019 with "Little Women," earning critical acclaim and fantastic Rotten Tomatoes scores.
Noah was surely one of the downsides of Emma Watson's career, especially because it continued a poor Rotten Tomatoes streak for the actress that wouldn't be broken until 2019. The 2014 epic biblical drama film was directed by Darren Aronofsky and written by Aronofsky and Ari Handel, and the movie chronicled the biblical story of Noah's Ark from the Book of Genesis and the Book of Enoch. Watson starred as Ila in the cast of Noah. Ila was an orphan whom Noah and Naameh, played by Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly, took in and raised as their own in the movie.

Idw's dark crime procedural Kill More has already drawn readers in with its brutal first issue and subtle sci-fi elements. As cops in a crumbling city try to solve the murders in their already heavy caseload, a cadre of new serial killers has moved in. With names like the Obituary Machine, Giraffe, and Lady Facesmasher, these criminals all pride themselves on their individual MOs.
Kill More #2 – written by Scott Bryan Wilson, with art by Max Allen Fuchs – finds the city of Colonia suffering high unemployment, crumbling infrastructure, and a skyrocketing murder rate. Below is the exclusive preview for the issue.
Ahead in the latest chapter, artist Max Fuchs, speaking in the same morbid tone as the series, promises, "one of my top five favorite botched vegetarian restaurant assault scenes Ever. And if you know me, that says an awful lot.

All of the cast members announced for the HBO Max series Dune: The Sisterhood (which is a prequel to the Dune feature films) up to this point have been for female roles – which makes sense, since the show is going to be about “a mysterious order of women”. But now Deadline has broken the news that the show does have a male lead among its characters, and that role is going to be played by Travis Fimmel (Raised by Wolves).
Diane Ademu-John, who previously worked on The Haunting of Bly Manor at Netflix, Empire at Fox, The Originals and The Vampire Diaries at The CW, and Medium and Crossing Jordan at NBC, is the showrunner on Dune: The Sisterhood. For some reason, too many science fiction films dwell on disasters and not on the sense of wonder of being in space. The majesty and grandeur of the universe doesn’t hold enough promise and therefore release after release seems to focus on the terrible things that will happen to us out there. The latest such release, The Colony, is now out on disc from Lionsgate, which they hope will amuse you until they inflict Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall.

A Place Called Dignity is the latest drama to take on the abusive horrors that happened behind the gated, religious doors of the Colony of Dignity in Chile, which has also in recent years been the focus of Emma Watson-starrer The Colony, animation The Wolf House, documentary Songs Of Repression and Netflix documentary series A Sinister Sect: Colonia Dignida.
Matias Rojas Valencia uses an outsider, 12-year-old Pablo, as our surrogate into this German community whose outward face of singing and industriousness hid a decades long rule by abuser its leader Paul Schäfer (Hanns Zischler), who also had a sideline in torture and disappearances for the Pinochet regime.

New Europe Film Sales, handling international sales for Matías Rojas Valencia’s “A Place Called Dignity,” “Un lugar llamado dignidad” in Spanish, which is currently playing in competition at this year’s Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, have given Variety exclusive access to the film’s international trailer.
The film presents a dramatized look at events surrounding Paul Schaefer, a former Nazi soldier who fled to rural Chile after WWII. There, he established the German-speaking Colonia Dignidad (Dignity Colony) and reigned over a generations-long culture of torture, child abuse and murder, thanks to the protection of Chile’s former dictator Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship. Under Schaefer’s leadership the community entrenched itself, becoming indispensable to the locals and providing schooling and medical services in an area where there would otherwise be none.

It might be hyperbolic or unhelpful to label Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña’s “The Wolf House” as , but merely describing this stop-motion nightmare should be enough to explain the impulse.
A grimmer-than-Grimm fairy tale inspired (and ostensibly produced) by Colonia Dignidad — the cult-like Chilean enclave founded by German fugitive Paul Schäfer, an insatiable pedophile who raped the members of his community, provided shelter to Nazi war criminals like Josef Mengele, and tortured Pinochet’s enemies in exchange for his support — “The Wolf House” takes the age-old story of the Three Little Pigs and filters it through the warped mind of a profoundly traumatized little girl until it no longer resembles a fable so much as it does the final minutes of “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.”
Like the aroma of warm cookies wafting out of a witch’s hut, “The Wolf House” begins with a disarming trap, as...

If an Orwellian fable were to be visualized by a surrealist in the vein of Salvador Dali, the result would look and feel something like “The Wolf House,” a jaw-dropping marriage of various animation techniques, chiefly stop-motion. A dystopian tale with haunting echoes of “The Three Little Pigs” and “Red Riding Hood,” this shape-shifting, trippy nightmare from filmmakers Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña startles and terrifies in equal measure, while putting forth an uncompromising examination of fascism in a way that only animation can do. Audiences will frequently ask themselves, “How on earth did they pull that off?” as characters and objects emerge, evolve and transform in a relentless rhythm — the whole movie is shot to suggest a single continuous sequence — while feeling disturbed, even frightened to their bones for reasons they won’t always be able to pinpoint.

“The only absolute in history is change,” said the Victorian historian Lord Acton. He might have been talking about the streaming platforms’ current international strategies. Since they launched internationally, Netflix and Amazon’s focus and priorities have been in constant evolution. Current pressures – evolving demographies, new regulation, new competition, still untapped growth – mean that re-engineering won’t stop any time soon.

Each year, Forbes comes out with their Most Overpaid and Best Value actors list, and each year I’m a bit mystified by the math. For whatever reason, box office figures are compiled for the last three movies an actor appeared in before June 1, 2017 ( ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) and are measured against “estimated” salaries to determine the return on investment, but limited release movies don’t count.
So, it’s why Emma Watson winds up as the second most valuable star in Hollywood right, thanks to the Disney behemoth “Beauty & The Beast,” even though her box office disaster “The Circle,” which came shortly thereafter, and you already forgot about, doesn’t factor into the calculations (nor her pre-‘Beauty’ limited release misfires “Regression” and “Colonia“).

The Oscar race isn’t over until the last movie screens, and this year one of the final contenders to be unveiled will be “Phantom Thread.” The drama marks the hugely anticipated reunion between Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis, who last worked together a decade ago on “There Will Be Blood.” The Upton Sinclair-inspired drama earned eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, and gave Day-Lewis his second trophy for Best Actor (he’d make history and win a third for “Lincoln” five years later), so anyone would be foolish to underestimate just how big “Phantom Thread” will be this awards season.
Focus Features has been keeping a majority of the details surrounding the movie under lock and key, although the official trailer was finally released on October 23, teasing a gorgeously shot drama about the romantic obsessions of a self-destructive artist. “Phantom Thread” seems to operating...

2017-05-01T06:31:02-07:00Why Did Emma Watson's 'The Circle' Bomb?
Stardom can be a very perishable commodity at the modern box office.
Over the weekend, the thriller The Circle, starring Emma Watson as a young woman working for a nefarious high-tech company, opened to disheartening $9.3 million from 3,163 theaters.
That's in stark comparison to Watson's other movie still in the marketplace, Disney's blockbuster Beauty and the Beast, the live-action update of the 1991 animated classic that has grossed north of $1.14 billion to date globally. (Watson rose to fame upon playing Hermoine Granger in the Harry Potter film franchise.)

Post-“Harry Potter,” Emma Watson has actively avoided blockbusters, instead turning her attention to auteurs like Sofia Coppola (“The Bling Ring“) and James Ponsoldt (this spring’s “The Circle“), or using her star power to get small projects off the ground, to varying results (“The Perks Of Being A Wallflower” is great, “Colonia” isn’t).

★★★★☆ From Argentine director Pablo Trapero, The Clan is the third South American-set drama of the last twelve months to inspect the devastating personal trauma caused by autocratic, prison-like communities. From a remote Chilean coastal village Pablo Larrain's The Club scythed through a suffocating cloak of hushed-up Catholic church abuse; with less gut-wrenching guile Florian Gallenberger exposed the sordid Pinochet era exploits of German tyrant Paul Schafer in The Colony. The Clan takes place in Trapero's homeland across the border and focuses on the outwardly normal, well-to-do Puccio family, who, in the early 1980s, kidnapped and murdered people for money.

Rosamund Pike and Daniel Brühl are in talks to topline “Entebbe,” Working Title’s Palestinian drama about the true events surrounding Operation Entebbe and the hijacking of an Air France plane in 1976. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actors will portray two German hijackers.
In the summer of that year, an Air France plane with 258 passengers was hijacked by two members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and two members of the German Revolutionary Cells. The thriller’s title comes from the hostage-rescue mission carried out by commandos of the Israel Defense Forces at Entebbe Airport in Uganda.

New films from the Harry Potter star, Morgan Freeman and Al Pacino might have scored low UK opening weekends but they’re part of a new release strategy

Emma Watson’s star power couldn’t help her latest film, “The Colony,” in the UK. According to figures released by the British Film Institute, the drama only made £47, or about $60, in its opening weekend. The numbers came from three cinemas that reported sales figures to the measurement agency Rentrak.
“The Colony” tells the story of Lena (Watson), a young woman who infiltrates Colonia Dignidad, a religious compound that serves as a cult and torture prison for the former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, in order to find her boyfriend (Daniel Brühl) who was kidnapped.

Emma Watson and Daniel Brühl make a swashbuckling escape from a dark corner of Chilean history in this ill-judged romantic thrilller
This romantic thriller takes as its backdrop a real-life institution: the Colonia Dignidad, a shady ex-Nazi religious cult located in rural Chile which doubled up as a torture facility for some of the political prisoners taken by Pinochet’s Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional. The film imagines a scenario in which a German activist, Daniel (Daniel Brühl), is taken to the compound, and his girlfriend Lena (Emma Watson) follows him there to try and help him escape. It’s certainly tense, and the 1973 backdrop is effectively captured by the design team. But the tone – it’s a sexually charged ripping yarn topped with a Argo-esque airport nailbiter of an ending – seems off. It’s a glib trivialisation of one of the grimmer chapters of Chilean history.

Emma Watson and Daniel Brühl star in this ropey drama about a sinister Chilean religious community founded by a Nazi émigré
Despite exploitative dodginess, plot-holes the size of Saturn’s rings and an ending pinched from Ben Affleck’s Argo, this movie deserves some points for addressing a little-known dysfunctional horror in Chile’s Pinochet era. Some time after the war, Chile had become home to the Colonia Dignidad, a spartan religious community founded by a German émigré: former Wehrmacht officer and Hitler Youth veteran Paul Schäfer. It was actually a prison camp with barbed wire fences and watchtowers enclosing a Teutonic cult-kingdom involving child abuse, which furthermore put itself enthusiastically at the service of the Pinochet regime, spiriting away its prisoners and torture victims – itself becoming part of the torture.

He drove a wedge between Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Captain America: Civil War and now, Daniel Bruhl is bound for the stars via Paramount and Bad Robot’s mind-bending sci-fi flick, God Particle.
The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, confirming that Bruhl will don the space gear as an astronaut aboard the International Space Station, one who bears witness to a “terrifying discovery that challenges everything they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for survival.”
Early reports claim that a physics experiment gone awry – one that seemingly involves a particle accelerator in the vein of Europe’s Large Hadron Collider – is to blame for the sudden disappearance of Earth, and the Iss crew is left facing a terrifying dilemma when an unidentified space shuttle drifts into orbit. Friend or foe? That’s something that’s being kept firmly under wraps for now.

Colonia is a romance/thriller starring Emma Watson and Daniel Bruhl as a young couple caught up in the 1973 Chilean military coup, when General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the democratically-elected but left-leaning Allende government. The event launched a period of harsh repression during which thousands of people were “disappeared,” and torture and murder of suspected dissidents was common, a time that still haunts Chileans today. One of the dictator’s favor places for those interrogations was a remote compound occupied a shadowy religious cult with reported neo-Nazi leanings, known as Colonia Dignidad (Dignity Colony), whose leader Paul Schafer was an influential supporter of Pinochet.
This is real history and it sounds like a great premise for a gripping historical/political drama but Colonia fails to capitalize on that potential. Instead, we get a fitful thriller that focuses more on a romance between the lead characters and less on the history. With...

“Inspired by true events,” can mean a lot of different things in the movie game, and in the case of Colonia, it seems to be working almost a horror-film spin on the idea. There is a country called Chile. 1973 saw a military coup there, and a place called Colonia Dignidad was a cult compound run by ex-Nazi Paul Schäfer, which served as a torture station for Pinochet’s secret police. After that we diverge from reality, though in a somewhat interesting way.
The setting is real, but the plot is something else.
Lena (Emma Watson) is a stewardess for Lufthansa, and her lover Daniel (Daniel Brühl) has fallen under the spell of pre-coup Chile, and those who struggle against the country’s harsh political reality. The pair are in the wrong place at the wrong time, and Daniel is taken to Colonia Dignidad. When no one will help her, Lena...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Belgica (Felix van Groeningen)
Writer/director Felix van Groeningen based Belgica’s script on his father’s experiences running a nightclub in Ghent. How closely the story hews to the real events is anyone’s guess, though the boilerplate “though inspired by true events, all persons depicted are fictitious” title card which opens the film suggests that it might hit too close to home for more than a few real-life people.

A happiest of birthdays to former blockbuster youngster and now indie starlet Emma Watson! In one of the most charming bits of movie programming serendipity, her new film Colonia is also being released today.
Colonia debuted at last fall's Toronto Film Festival, and is now in select theatres and on VOD. Set during the factual Chilean military uprising in 1973, the film stars Watson as a young woman going undercover within a cult to rescue her lover (Daniel Brühl) from its terrifying captivity. The film looks to deliver morbid thrills against a political background, with Michael Nyqist's variation on an actual cult leader looking like the stuff of nightmares.
While Watson is still beloved by Harry Potter fans for her long-haul performance as Hermione Granger, her post-franchise work in smaller films has steadily shown new shades to the actress. Her best work yet is her turn in Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring,...

When is a historically-based political thriller not a historically-based political thriller? When it only pretends to be one for twenty minutes or so before switching gears to become an action/drama about life inside a mysterious cult. This isn’t automatically a bad thing… Lena (Emma Watson) is a stewardess who arrives in Chile for a few days of rest, relaxation, and time with her boyfriend, Daniel (Daniel Brühl). He came to Santiago several months earlier to assist the people in their protests against a harsh and unfair government, but when a military coup sends the city into chaos he and Lena find themselves trapped. He’s taken prisoner and sent to a remote camp called Colonia Dignidad, and while she’s free to leave for safer shores she instead stays in Chile intent on finding him. Colonia Dignidad is, on its surface, a charity-based camp filled with people dedicating their lives to God through hard work...

Warner Bros is set to be the latest studio to gamble on fewer blockbuster movies. But there's a big silver lining, Simon argues...
Last week, the news landed that Warner Bros was considering reducing its output of films, focusing its slate primarily on DC, Lego and Harry Potter movies.
The argument runs that it’s had a bumpy few years, with expensive films such as Pan, Jupiter Ascending and In The Heart Of The Sea leaving the office copy of Excel looking decidedly red and distressed. The box office tail off of Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is said not to have helped, either. It actually looks like we're officially in the era where a movie will end up making just under $1bn and end up being called a commercial disappointment.
If and when Warner Bros follows such an approach – and it’s not confirmed that it will,...

Plot: After her boyfriend disappears during the 1973 Chilean military coup, a young woman (Emma Watson) infiltrates the infamous Colonia Dignidad cult, run by a psychotic preacher, Paul Schafer (Michael Nyqvist). Review: Colonia should have been a great movie. The Chilean coup has inspired some pretty terrific work, with the highlight being the Costa Gravas classic Missing,. Considering that the Colonia Dignidad... Read More...

"Harry Potter" franchise actress Emma Watson is said to be taking a good year off from acting. In an interview with feminist bell hooks (via News.com.au), the young British star says:
"I'm taking a year away from acting to focus on two things. My own personal development is one. My own personal task is to read a book a week and also to read a book a month as part of my book club. One thing I am going to do that I've been working on for a while is completing my yoga Level 3 meditation for teaching."
Watson recently finished filming "The Circle" with Tom Hanks which opens late this year, and Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" which opens early 2017. Her most recent film "Regression" opened in limited release a few weeks ago, but flopped. She also has "Colonia" which scores a limited release in April.

Can you go a full 12 month stretch without any new movies from Harry Potter star Emma Watson? Well, you're going to have to, as the fan-favorite actress has declared that she is taking a full one year break from acting. Though, in the scheme of things, we'll probably never know she is gone. As she has a number of upcoming films set to be released over the course of the next two years. We probably won't feel the sting of this Emma Watson drought until at least 2018.
Emma Watson wants to go on an acting hiatus so that she can focus on herself. She also plans to give more energy to her work with the HeForShe campaign, which targets gender equality. Here's what she had to say in a recent interview with Paper Magazine.
