Gillian Flynn is returning to HBO following “Sharp Objects.”

The author will adapt her novel “Dark Places” into a HBO limited series, as IndieWire can confirm. Variety first reported the announcement.

Flynn, whose novel “Gone Girl” was adapted in an Oscar-nominated David Fincher film, will serve as co-creator, writer, and co-showrunner with Brett Johnson (“Escape at Dannemora”). Guerrin Gardner is also credited as a co-creator and writer for “Dark Places.”

The 2009 novel follows Libby Day across decades as she revisits the death of her mother and two sisters amid an alleged Satanic killing spree in Kinnakee, Kansas in 1985. While Libby survived, she testified that her teenage brother Ben was the murderer.

From “Gone Girl” author Gillian Flynn, the novel Dark Places was first adapted back in 2015 as a movie starring Charlize Theron, and an HBO limited series is now in the works.

Variety reports that Gillian Flynn will serve as co-creator, writer, and co-showrunner on the “Dark Places” series from HBO, with Brett Johnson co-creating, writing and showrunning.

Guerrin Gardner is also credited as co-creator and writer, Variety notes.

HBO is developing a limited series based on the Gillian Flynn novel “Dark Places,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Flynn will serve as co-creator, writer, and co-showrunner on the project and holds the rights to the novel. Brett Johnson will also serve as co-showrunner, co-creator and writer, with Guerrin Gardner also credited as co-creator and writer. Theresa Kang and Caroline Garity of Blue Marble Pictures will executive produce along with Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi of Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment.

“Dark Places” was originally published in 2009. The official description states:

Tom Hiddleston has been cast in the upcoming Apple limited series ‘White Darkness,’ from ‘Pachinko’ creator Soo Hugh.

Based on the nonfiction book of the same name by David Grann. The series is inspired by the true-life account of Henry Worsley (Hiddleston), a devoted husband and father, a former soldier, a man of deep honour and sacrifice, but also a man deeply obsessed with adventure, manifesting in an epic journey crossing Antarctica on foot.

Hugh will serve as writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner on the series. Mark Heyman will executive produce and co-showrun. ‘Pachinko’ executive producer Theresa Kang-Lowe and Caroline Garity of Blue Marble Pictures will also executive produce. Apple Studios and UCP will co-produce. Blue Marble is currently under an overall deal at Apple.

Soo Hugh, who most recently created and showran the Apple series “Pachinko,” will serve as writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner on “The White Darkness.” Mark Heyman will executive produce and co-showrun. “Pachinko” executive producer Theresa Kang-Lowe and Caroline Garity of Blue Marble Pictures will also executive produce. This will be the second Apple series that Hiddleston has starred in to date.

The White Darkness is inspired by the true life account of Henry Worsley, played by Hiddleston, a devoted husband and father, a former soldier, a man of deep honor and sacrifice, but also a man deeply obsessed with adventure, manifesting in an epic journey crossing Antarctica on foot.

It marks the second Apple series for Hiddleston, who is best known for starring as Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after The Essex Serpent.
