Every year for the past 10 years, Kering has joined forces with the Cannes Film Festival to recognize groundbreaking women in film with its Women in Motion program, which highlights the creativity and contribution made by women — both on and off screen — in the world of culture and the arts. Kering continues its annual tradition of uplifting first-time feature filmmakers with its Women in Motion Emerging Talent Award, which includes a €50,000 grant towards the laureate’s second feature. This year’s recipient is documentarian Marianna Brennand, who made the jump to narrative filmmaking with her debut feature “Manas.” She will receive the honor on May 18.

Director Isaac Ezban continues exploring themes of family through a fantasy horror lens with his latest, Párvulos. As its title indicates, roughly translating to pre-schoolers or toddlers, the coming-of-age dystopian fable follows three young brothers, practically newborn babes, discovering the perils and pleasures of life after a world-ending pandemic. Ezban reinvigorates a well-worn setup and subgenre with style and poignancy, framing a classic zombie apocalypse story from the naïve, impressionable, and whimsical eyes of children.

Párvulos introduces one-legged teen Salvador (Farid Escalante Correa), downing worms as he sets about a bizarre series of chores while teaching younger brother Oliver (Leonardo Cervantes) and baby brother Benjamin (Mateo Ortega Casillas). The peculiar rituals aren’t the only sign that normalcy long ago ceased in this virus-ravaged world: decayed bodies hang in the yard in front of the boys’ rural country home. The brothers live in isolation, caught between childhood innocence and survival.

In Radical, Mexican superstar Eugenio Derbez plays Sergio, a teacher in a neglected Mexican school who deploys unorthodox pedagogical methods, throwing the typical curriculum out the window despite skepticism from administrators, corruption from local officials and the life-threatening obstacles faced by his young charges.

After winning the festival favorite award at Sundance a year ago, the film screened in theaters last fall, and now distributor Participant has released a special featurette, an interview with Derbez as well as the real-life teacher and star student behind the story, in conversation with Oscar-nominated actress Yalitza Aparicio – who earned her own teaching credentials just before landing her big break in Roma.

Exclusive: The Spanish Civil War drama being helmed by The Handmaid’s Tale EP Matthew Hastings has found its scribe.

Irma Correa, whose past credits include Netflix Spain hits Alba and If Only, is penning the drama, which was first revealed by Deadline in 2022 and is produced by My Life with the Walter Boys indie iGeneration Studios.

Inspired by real life events, Villa Paz follows a team of idealistic medics who convert a royal palace into a field hospital. Set in Spain in 1937, an international team of volunteers toil tirelessly at the hospital, as rivalries and relationships imperil their battle to save lives. No network is attached as of yet.

The series was created by iGeneration’s Max Benitz – who starred opposite Russell Crowe in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World – with Hastings showrunning and directing.

Correa will write, having penned two of Netflix Spain’s biggest series in recent years.

Christopher Nolan will be honored by the Federation of American Scientists for his cinematic portrait of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Universal’s Oppenheimer this November. The five-time Oscar nominee will be bestowed with the org’s Public Service Award which recognizes outstanding work in science policy and culture.

The awards ceremony, which will take place in Washington D.C next month, revives a decades-long tradition that began in 1971, which honors the contributions of a diverse group of scientists, policymakers, and tastemakers in pursuit of advancements in science and technology.

“Nolan’s film depicts the scientists who formed Fas in the fall of 1945 as the ‘Federation of Atomic Scientists’ to communicate the dangers of nuclear weapons to the public. Exclusive: Radical, the Mexican true-life drama starring Coda‘s Eugenio Derbez that broke out of Sundance as the 2023 Festival Favorite, has secured a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement that will permit publicity efforts ahead of its October 20 nationwide release, Deadline has learned.

Agreements of the sort do not guarantee actor participation in PR campaigns, only opening up the possibility for it amidst the SAG-AFTRA strike. But Radical is precisely the kind of film that would most benefit from it, as a small, star-driven awards prospect looking to perform at the box office. And it is expected that Derbez now will be out promoting the movie, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Zalla wrote and directed the critically acclaimed drama, based on a 2013 article written for Wired magazine by Josh Davis, which was among the most discussed titles at Sundance 2023.
