Star Trek: Deep Space Nine had a lot of big episodes. But a huge two-parter from season 3 was critical to changing the entire series!
For the first two seasons, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine mostly focused on Bajor and its recovery from a century of Cardassian occupation. The Cardassians were, of course, a regular fixture along with other Trek species like the Romulans.
Season 2 ended by introducing the Dominion, the ruthless race trying to conquer the galaxy. Season 3 opened by revealing the Founders, the shapeshifting race Odo belonged to, who led the Dominion. This threat would soon become a dominant storyline for the rest of DS9.
And the turning point of the show’s storytelling was the two-part tale “Improbable Cause” and “The Die Is Cast.” Aside from giving two of the show’s best characters a nice spotlight and boasting top-notch action, these episodes also changed DS9 and the entire Trek universe forever.

When Star Trek: Deep Space Nine first premiered in 1993, viewers met Quark, a Ferengi who runs the station’s entertainment center and bar. Along with his brother Rom and nephew Nog, Quark lives on the station and is more benign overall than other Ferengi who have appeared in the Star Trek universe in the past. While some see Quark as pure comic relief, his presence on Deep Space Nine is vital in many other ways.
1. He brings depth to the Ferengi culture
Before Quark, viewers didn’t know much about the Ferengi other than their propensity toward greed and acquisition of valuable goods. While Quark is a typical Ferengi in this manner, he’s also one of the first of his kind who shows viewers what lies beyond the surface in his dealings with Rom and Nog, especially when he and his brother must work together when profits from the...

Why did we never get a sequel to one of the best DS9 episodes ever that paid homage to James Bond? Read more here!
Every now and then, Star Trek times a storyline clearly meant to capitalize on a major movie coming out. A good example is how The Next Generation's "QPid," where Q has Picard and the crew as Robin Hood and his Merry Men aired in 1991 just as the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was coming out.
In 1995, buzz was building over Goldeneye, the first new James Bond movie in six years, with Pierce Brosnan making his debut as 007. With Bond fervor at a fever pitch, Deep Space Nine got into the act with one of the most inventive episodes ever, "Our Man Bashir."

The Star Trek franchise officially became defined by the nerds when its references were featured extensively in The Big Bang Theory. The four main stars of the show, especially Sheldon Cooper, were vocal fans of the franchise, to the point where they cosplayed as some iconic characters from different shows.
The popularity of this quirk of the characters eventually led to many Star Trek actors making cameos in The Big Bang Theory. Actors like Wil Wheaton and George Takei had hilarious guest roles in the sitcom, and the legendary William Shatner also made an appearance. However, actor Brian George, who was in Voyager, featured in 16 episodes of the sitcom.

Badass Ravi Kumar’s ending largely focused on [Spoiler Alert] Ravi Kumar delivering a precious diamond necklace to Carlos Pedro Panther, who wanted to give it to Laila. Now, Laila had an important reel full of pictures of confidential documents and whatnot that had been secretly procured by Carlos’ spies from the Indian government in order to deliver it to a rogue Pakistani extremist named Syed Bashir. Carlos would’ve gotten it directly and then handed it over to Bashir for a price, but Laila intervened and used the reel as her bargaining chip to get the necklace. Since Interpol’s Mahavir Ahuja and the Indian police’s Commissioner Awasthi want to stop Pakistan from gaining any kind of upper hand against India using that reel and disrupting the relatively peaceful atmosphere between the neighboring nations, they sent in Ravi Kumar. Given how Ravi Kumar didn’t know the location of the reel,...

Star Trek has returned to epic crossover stories, a stable of the 90s. You couldn't go a season without seeing someone, from another show, popping up in another series. Jean-Luc Picard cameoed in Deep Space Nine's pilot, as did Quark for Voyager's. We saw William Riker (or his clone) in nearly every show he could find time to appear in. Q was everywhere but in very limited quantities.
It was a fun time to be a fan. Yet, as the Nu Trek Era began, crossovers became a thing of the past. Sure, Seven of Nine was a major player in Star Trek: Picard but she wasn't seen as a cameo or guest star, she was part of the main cast. So she didn't really feel like a 'crossover' character.
Star Trek: Lower Decks would start doing cameos, a trend we'd see go into Star Trek: Prodigy, but as neither...

Talk about taking chances! Mike McMahan, the series creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks, took a big one when he wrote the series finale, "The New Next Generation." He knew who he wanted on the show and wrote the parts without knowing whether or not the actors he had in mind were available or even if they would commit to doing the show.
McMahan appeared on Tex-Trek podcast [via CinemaBlend] and shared just how stressful things were after he'd written the script. The creator said "I was so panicked because the episode written was really complex. Every single legacy character had a story in it." McMahan went on to say that "If somebody said no or their schedule didn't work, it's not like I could just replace, you know, [Alexander Siddig] as Bashir. I would have to rewrite it. I would have lost ‘Gashir’ because I just wasn't going to do it without them.

The third and final season of the survival thriller, The Head, has started its journey with a banger of a double episode premiere, and it seems like things are going back to square one to complete the cycle of violence that began with the death of Sarah Jackson and the burning of Polaris V. The first season of the series saw Maggie Mitchell, aka Olivia Jackson, getting revenge for her mother’s death by killing every member of Polaris VI, who kept the truth about Sarah’s death a secret from the rest of the world. By the end, Olivia had framed biologist Arthur Wilde, who was responsible for Sarah’s death, for the murders she committed. In the second season, Arthur was drowned to death by her own daughter, Rachel, as a retaliation for his heinous murder spree, which resulted in the deaths of the majority of the members...

"Star Trek" is full of incredible odd couple friendships, starting with the hot-tempered human Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and stoic half-Vulcan Commander Spock (Leonard Nimoy). Kirk and Spock were a terrific pair because of how much they balanced one another and learned from each other, showing the deep bonds that can develop between very different people. Spock is even the one who helps Kirk begin to understand his racism against the Klingons in "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," showing that even after decades together the two still have things to teach each other. Their friendship is a truly beautiful thing, but there is one notable factor: they are both in Starfleet, and from Federation planets. They may be very different, but they are never truly adversarial.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) had a fascinating life as Deep Space Nine's Chief Medical Officer. Originally conceived by Star Trek producers as a thinly-drawn character named Dr. Amoros, Bashir grew as a character and developed a complex backstory throughout Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's seven seasons. Bashir's journey took him from being a neophyte doctor who was a little too friendly with his crewmates—and definitely talked too much—into becoming a grounded, consummate medical professional with rich and layered friendships.
Born in 2341 to Richard Bashir (Brian George) and Amsha Bashir (Fadwa el Guindi), Julian Bashir was initially scared of doctors as a young child, but developed an interest in becoming a doctor, himself, after realizing medicine was a skill one could learn. Julian's stuffed bear, Kukalaka, was his first patient. Unfortunately, young Julian's mental and physical abilities would prove a hindrance...

Section 31 is one of the most mysterious and long-lasting ideas that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine added to Star Trek canon. This network of spies and secret agents does the United Federation of Planets' dirty work, pruning away any threats to the perfect paradise of Earth. The upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 movie promises to fill in details about the early history of Section 31, between Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation, but audiences first encountered Section 31 on Deep Space Nine from the perspective of Doctor Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig).
The second episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine established Doctor Bashir loves mysteries and spying. He trades barbs and innuendos with Elim Garak (Andrew J. Showrunner Mike McMahan discusses "Barashir" becoming canon after the couple's delightfully unexpected appearance on Star Trek: Lower Decks. Chief Medical Officer Bashir and Cardassian Garak struck up an unlikely friendship while stationed together on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s titular space station. Fans shipping Bashir and Garak became a thing over the course of the series, but the pair never became romantically attached in Star Trek canon, until their recent animated appearance on Lower Decks season 5.
Hologram Bashir and Garak are now officially Barashir in canon thanks to Lower Decks' "Fissure Quest" episode, but it was always that way in the mind of showrunner McMahan, as he discussed during a recent interview where he addressed making fan fiction come to life, if only briefly (via Collider):

Star Trek: Voyager will turn 30 years old in 2025, and one of the series’ stars, Garrett Wang, said he is having a hard time wrapping his head around that fact. Wang played Ensign Harry Kim in all seven seasons of Voyager, the series that ran from 1995 to 2001, and followed the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager as they tried to make their way back home after being flung to the Delta Quadrant.
“It’s still hard to believe that 30 years have passed,” Wang said in an interview with the official Star Trek website. “I start thinking about that, and go, ‘My goodness. There are people walking around on this planet that weren’t even alive when Voyager started,” he said.
Voyager, led by Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) chronicled the starship and its crew and the challenges they faced trying to return to the Alpha quadrant.

Star Trek: Lower Decks officially enters the Multiverse with its penultimate episode, gathering a crew of franchise alum from different realities to halt a threat to all creation. More than a few viewers of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine speculated on the electrifying chemistry between recurring characters Doctor Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and Mister Elim Garak (Andrew Robinson). But despite becoming a fan-favorite pairing for the show's entire seven-season run, a relationship between the two was never officially confirmed — until now, thanks to the latest episode of the animated Paramount+ series Star Trek: Lower Decks.
In "Fissure Quest," the show's dimensional rift storyline comes to a head, as an alternate version of Jack Quaid's Boimler crosses dimensions in order to investigate the eponymous fissures. As Star Trek: Lower Decks wraps up its five-season run on Paramount+, the series did something that many fans of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine have been longing for since the first time a young doctor and a Cardassian tailor first met aboard a space station. Per Variety, in its penultimate episode titled “Fissure Quest,” alternate reality versions of Doctor Julian Bashir and Elim Garak finally reached couple status, albeit if one of the pair was a hologram.
Alexander Siddig and Andrew Robinson reprised their roles as Bashir and Garak for the Lower Decks episode which saw an alternate-reality William Boimler (Jack Quaid), who is the transporter clone of Bradward Boimler, leading a mission to investigate rifts in the space-time continuum. In the episode, Garak is the doctor, and Bashir is his holographic husband.

Star Trek: Lower Deck's final season has reached its conclusion. Nine episodes have come and gone and the last episode is set to air in a matter of days. Before they close things out, however, the crew behind the show took one last leap into the unknown. The penultimate episode, entitled "Fissure Quest" saw a collection of Star Trek all-stars from around the canon, coming together to help stop a growing threat.
The episode brought back a handful of major names, and while they all played familiar roles, no one returned as their original character. Each actor or actress who came back played a different universe's version of their character.
Firstly, Jolene Blalock was back, once again playing T'Pol. Her first version of T'Pol was first seen in Star Trek: Enterprise over 20 years ago. This T'Pol however isn't the same version. This version that we see has been married to...

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5, Episode 9 - "Fissure Quest"
Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 just topped its previous crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. In Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 7, "Those Old Scientists," Ensigns Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) made the jump from animation to live-action. After encountering a portal, Boimler and Mariner find themselves in the 23rd century USS Enterprise of Captain Christoper Pike (Anson Mount). What follows is a hilarious series of interactions as Boimler tries (and fails) to contain his excitement about meeting his heroes.
In its final season on Paramount+, Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 finds the USS Cerritos investigating a series of quantum fissures that have opened up across the galaxy. Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, episode 9, "Fissure Quest," reveals that Section 31 has assigned Captain William Boimler and a crew of "interdimensional castaways" to investigate these rifts in spacetime.

Directed by Martin Campbell, Dirty Angels is an action thriller starring Eva Green, Ruby Rose, and Maria Bakalova. Jake, an Army Ranger, was brought onboard to carry out a rescue operation in Afghanistan in 2021, disguised as a member of a medical relief team along with other female American soldiers. A group of school students, all daughters of American ambassadors and foreign ministers, were abducted from a school in Pakistan. The kidnappers, headed by Isis leader Amir, demanded ten million dollars for each student, as well as the release of Sheik al-Shimali. While most of the students were American, the former Afghan Minister of Education’s daughter, Badia Durani, was also among those abducted. Badia’s mother was convinced that her daughter would be the first to be beheaded and that Isis would use her to force the Americans to come up with a way to pay for the release of their daughters.

We have reached the beginning of the end for Star Trek: Lower Decks. With one more episode after this, "Fissure Quest" goes all in on what the series is known for: Callbacks and references to the Star Trek series of the 1990s and 2000s.
Episode summary (spoilers)
"Fissure Quest" begins with a brief scene in the bar of the USS Cerritos, where our Lower Deckers are chatting. After a passing mention, T'Lyn asks Boimler about his transporter clone, William Boimler, who reportedly died in Season 3. We then transition to the Anaximander, a Defiant-class starship commanded by said William Boimler, the decidedly not dead captain working for Section 31.
Through a captain's log, we learn that Willam Boimler is working to close all of the quantum fissures that have been opening over the course of this season. His crew on this mission consists of alternate-universe versions of characters from earlier Star Trek series,...

25 years later, Star Trek: Lower Decks finally makes a fan-favorite couple from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine canon. Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, episode 9, "Fissure Quest", follows up with Captain William Boimler (Jack Quaid), the transporter duplicate of Lieutenant Brad Boimler who was assigned to Starfleet's Section 31 after faking his death. Captain Boimler's crew is assembled from alternate reality versions of Star Trek legacy characters from across Star Trek's multiverse of timelines, including Star Trek: Enterprise's T'Pol (Jolene Blalock), a pre-Jadzia Curzon Dax (Fred Tatasciore), and a bevy of Ensigns Harry Kim (Garrett Wang).

“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” characters Doctor Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and Mister Elim Garak (Andrew Robinson) brimmed with chemistry throughout that series’ run — but if there was anything real behind their relationship, viewers never got to see it. But that pairing remains a fan favorite, and fans have speculated for years about the real relationship potential for two. Now, shippers finally got their happy ending — thanks to the latest episode of Paramount+’s animated “Star Trek: Lower Decks.”
In “Fissure Quest,” the penultimate episode of “Lower Decks” (as it wraps its fifth and final season), the series’ ongoing dimensional rift storyline reaches a boiling point. This comes following an alternate version of Boimler (Jack Quaid) as he embarks on a covert inter-dimensional mission to investigate the fissures.

This article contains spoilers for the penultimate episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
The penultimate episodes of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" -- season 5's "Fission Quest" -- takes place away from the U.S.S. Cerritos on a mysterious, covert interdimensional vessel called the U.S.S. Anaximander. The Anaximander is commanded by Captain William Boimler (Jack Quaid), a transporter duplicate of Brad Boimler, created several years ago on the series. Captain Boimler belongs to the ultra-secret organization Section 31, and he is on a mission to repair fissures in the spacetime continuum. It seems someone has been ripping holes in space, allowing free access between dimensions. This is causing chaos, as alternate versions of familiar "Star Trek" characters are haphazardly cross-pollinating, invading each other's universes with accidental frequency. Boimler and his crew use the tools on the Anaximander to seal up holes and find the hole-ripping culprit.

The penultimate episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 5 (and the series itself), titled "Fissure Quest," pulls away from the U.S.S. Cerritos, and instead takes place mostly on a ship called the U.S.S. Anaximander. This vessel is captained by one William Boimler (Jack Quaid), a duplicate of Brad Boimler, created via transporter accident. Captain Boimler is a member of the ultra-secret Section 31 and has been assigned a very important, very covert task: he is to sail around the galaxy, patching up the holes in the spacetime continuum that lead to parallel universes.
Boimler's crew is made up entirely of characters from other "Star Trek" shows, albeit slightly altered, parallel universe versions of them. They are what the Marvel Cinematic Universe would call "variants." Trekkies will be delighted to see that the Anaximander's doctor...

“I choose my characters as normal people,” Subahi tells Variety. “They are normal, like you can find everywhere in the street. They are not like political people. They are all from different neighborhoods and different backgrounds, but they all have the same demand and the same dream. They might disagree about how the revolution goes but they all want freedom.”

Star Trek is one of the most frequently discussed and influential television franchises in the history of the medium, an incredibly important building block in the formation of modern science fiction storytelling. When it began, Star Trek was different than anything that had been on television before, presenting moral and ethical dilemmas under the guise of space-faring adventures. The influence of the series can be felt all over media today in films like Blade Runner and Galaxy Quest and in the real world, where thousands of scientists, engineers and mathematicians say they were inspired by the show to pursue a life of exploration.

Ira Steven Behr brought a more realistic, character-driven approach to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, distinct from The Next Generation. Behr's focus on friendships and downtime activities, like O'Brien and Bashir getting drunk, set DS9 apart from Tng's formality. Behr's influence on modern Star Trek shows, like Discovery and Strange New Worlds, highlights the enduring impact of DS9's character-driven storytelling.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine showrunner Ira Steven Behr identified a "breath of reality" that defined the Star Trek: The Next Generation spinoff from its parent show. Deep Space Nine was specifically designed by Rick Berman and Michael Piller to stand out from Tng; DS9's cast of characters included both Federation and non-Federation officers, and it was set on a space station instead of a starship. The spinoff show Star Trek: Deep Space Nine seems to have gone The Simpsons’ route this election season and predicted a political policy back in 1995, that might come into effect in California now. Moreover, the episode in question was also reportedly set in 2024, making the prediction all the more eerie and accurate.
The episode ‘Past Tense’ sees the world in 2024 crumbling due to rising homelessness, which is attempted to be eradicated by the politicians by sending the homeless to encampments known as Sanctuaries. This ideology has been compared to Californian Governor Gavin Newsom’s latest policy on homelessness eradication.

Although "Star Trek" takes place in an ostensibly utopian future free from war, want, money, and discrimination, the show's original creator, Gene Roddenberry, felt that humanity required a reckoning before that utopia could begin. According to "Star Trek" lore, Earth would have to nearly destroy itself in a series of devastating wars before the scant survivors would be able to pick themselves up, construct faster-than-light travel, and prepare themselves to meet their closest alien neighbors. The original "Star Trek" takes place about two centuries after the end of World War III, giving humankind a chance to rebuild itself into a utopia.
Back in the 21st century, however, not everything was rosy. Indeed, the two-part "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Past Tense" threw its main characters back in time — via a transporter accident — to the year 2024 when everything seemed to be at its worst. Star Trek: DS9's nod to Tos episode "The Deadly Years" showcased a deep connection to the original series' canon and continuity. Writer Ronald D. Moore's love for Tos influenced many DS9 episodes, with references like Hyronalin connecting the two series. The use of Hyronalin in DS9 showcased medical continuity with Tos, with similar treatments also appearing in Tng and Voyager.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine contained a deep-cut Star Trek: The Original Series Easter egg from the episode "The Deadly Years", but it ended up having a deeper meaning. Star Trek: Tng's Emmy loss inspired a plot for Dr. Bashir in DS9, in which he was nominated for an award he never thought he'd win. In DS9, Dr. Bashir's Carrington Award storyline is a reference to Tng and NYPD Blue losing out to surprise competitor Picket Fences at the 1994 Emmys. The Carrington Award is given out by the Federation Medical Council to honor outstanding achievements in medicine.
Star Trek: The Next Generation's loss at the 1994 Emmy Awards inspired a storyline for Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Across seven seasons, Star Trek: Tng racked up an impressive 58 nominations and 17 awards at the Emmys between 1988 and 1994. Tng performed well in the technical categories at the Emmy Awards, but it was only in contention for the Outstanding Drama Series prize once. The lack of Emmy recognition for Tng actors is, rightly, a bone of contention...

Exclusive: Bestselling South African scribe Deon Meyer is turning his Last Of Us-esque thriller Fever into a TV series with Federation Meac.
The adaptation, which doesn’t yet have a buyer, is part of a three-project deal struck between Meyer’s Scenne23 and the Federation Studios label, with Meyer set to pen the series himself.
Fever follows Nico Storm and his father Willem, who are the few in South Africa to have survived a devastating virus that wiped out more than 90% of the world’s population. Willem, a thinker and a leader, has a vision for a new community rebuilt from the ruins of the old world, and so Amanzi is formed with a disparate group of survivors. Killing Eve producer Sid Gentle optioned the novel five years ago but that option has run down.
Joachim Landau, who runs Federation Meac, which develops projects mainly in the Middle East, Africa and Caribbean,...

The character of Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" belongs to a species called the Trill. Many Trills are capable of conjoining with long-lived, surgically implanted, worm-like symbionts that live in their abdomens. The symbionts get passed from host to host during their lifetimes, sharing a consciousness with each one. Dax is partially a 22-year-old woman, but, thanks to her symbiont, also possesses the memories and personalities of seven previous hosts, including — most recently — a rowdy old man named Curzon. Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks) was friends with Curzon and was thrilled to meet Jadzia, the next incarnation in his friend's life. He affectionately called her "old man."
When "Deep Space Nine" began, the writers focused heavily on Dax's relationship with the young, idealistic Dr. Bashir (Alexander Siddig), an insufferably flirt. Dr. Bashir would frequently proposition Dax, and she, with the patience of a centuries-old sage, would rebuff him.

In the pilot episode of "Star Trek: Voyager," titled "Caretaker," the U.S.S. Voyager is magically whisked clear across the galaxy by a super-powerful alien seeking compatible DNA it could use for breeding purposes. The Voyager is grievously damaged by the whisking and multiple crew members die, including the ship's entire medical staff. To assist with all the injuries, one of the Voyager crewmates activates the ship's Emergency Medical Hologram, an ultrasophisticated program that holographically projects an artificial doctor into the middle of sickbay.
The artificial doctor -- played on "Voyager" by Robert Picardo -- is capable of scanning patients, surmising what treatment might be needed, and can even administer medicine or perform surgery (the Emh has tangible substance thanks to force fields). Because he was designed for emergencies, the Emh was programmed to have a snippy, impatient personality. Whenever he is activated, he merely barks out: "Please state...
